The armor bonus actually applies versus all projectiles, not versus piercing damage.
This skill can be of great use in places like the Fissure of Woe where the enemies are known to have Barrage. This can take some pressure off your healers since it doesn't actually require the party to have a shield to block incoming projectiles. This, combined with Ward Against Melee provide a nice protection against the oncoming enemy without the use of a protection monk.
This skill's name may be a reference to the generic Star Trek quote “Shields up!”, most frequently used by Starship Captains before engaging in combat.
