The game tracks whether or not you are "in combat". You enter combat when you attack an enemy, an enemy attacks you, you use a skill on an enemy, or an enemy uses a skill on you. You stop being in combat about fifteen seconds after any of these things happen. There is no visual indicator within the game showing whether or not you are in combat.

Battle alert pose[ | ]

Characters assume a battle alert pose after attacking, taking damage, when an enemy begins to use a skill against the character, or when the character uses a skill with an activation time. The character returns to the idle pose after approximately 15 seconds of neither attacking nor taking damage.
