Update - Friday, August 31, 2007

The Far Shiverpeaks Await!

Guild Wars: Eye of the North is now available for purchase at retail stores, at PlayNC.com, and through the Guild Wars in-game store. Players who purchase Guild Wars: Eye of the North may now bring existing level 20 PvE (roleplaying) characters to the expansion's four new regions to acquire new skills, armor, and weapons, to recruit new Heroes, and to explore numerous multi-level dungeons!

Heroes

  • Heroes are NPC party members who can join your party, level up with your character, and use weapons, armor, and skills of your choosing. You can recruit ten new Eye of the North Heroes by completing certain quests and adventures throughout the expansion.
  • You can only bring three Heroes into your party at any given time. Since you and a friend can each bring three Heroes into a group, two players can now complete any challenge created for up to eight players.
  • After recruiting a Hero, you can use the "Add a Hero" interface in the Party Formation panel to invite the Hero into your party whenever you’re standing in a town or outpost. You can also add a Hero through the Hero tab in the Party Search panel (press P on your keyboard).
  • If you and another player both invite the same Hero, one of them will be the "real" Hero, who will interact with NPCs in cinematics and other scripted events, and the other will be an "imposter", who will use a generic name for the duration of the sequence.
  • Whenever you control a Hero, you will see a button next to the Hero’s name, which you can click to bring up the Hero Control panel. This panel provides advanced options for direct control of the Hero. You can use it to adjust the Hero's AI mode between fight, guard, or avoid combat. You can also use it to order the Hero to focus his attention on a specific target, to cast a certain skill, or to not use specific skills unless directed to do so by you.
  • Whenever you control at least one Hero, you will also see a button on the Compass that you can use to give orders to the Hero. To use it, simply click the numbered button that corresponds to the desired Hero, then click anywhere in the Compass or in the world where you would like the Hero to walk. To remove a Hero's orders, you can either double click that Hero's numbered button or click the "Cancel" button on the Compass.
  • Whenever you recruit a Hero while playing through the expansion, that Hero becomes unlocked for use with your PvP characters. Heroes that you recruit also come with skills, and those skills become unlocked on your account when you recruit the Hero.
  • Heroes don't maintain their own inventory of skills. Instead, they are able to use any skill that you have unlocked on your account.
  • Heroes don't maintain their own backpack or inventory of items. Instead, you can drag items from your inventory onto a Hero to equip him. Your Heroes can use weapons that you have customized for yourself.
  • Hero Trainers, located in various locations around the Far Shiverpeaks, will teach you a skill (and unlock it on your account for use by your Heroes) in return for a Hero Skill Point. You get a Hero Skill Point each time you gain a new rank of the Asura, Deldrimor, Ebon Vanguard, or Norn titles.
  • Hero Armor NPCs, located in the town of Gunnar's Hold and the outpost of the Central Transfer Chamber, can craft upgraded armor for your Heroes in return for certain items that you can acquire inside the Elite Dungeon (Slavers' Exile) and the Challenge Mission (Glint's Challenge).

Asura, Deldrimor, Ebon Vanguard, and Norn Titles

Players can now earn ranks in the new Asura, Deldrimor, Ebon Vanguard, and Norn title tracks by completing quests, participating in bounty hunts, competing in three brand new mini-games, and performing a variety of other activities. Attaining higher ranks in these titles gives players the following benefits:

  • Rank 3: Access to a special item crafter. Each group has a single item crafter who provides unique and powerful items. You must spend a Skill Point to have these items crafted for you.
  • Rank 4: Access to an exclusive weapon crafter. Each group has a single weapon crafter who provides unique weapons, such as the Raven Scythe and the Charrslayer Axe.
  • Rank 5: Access to an exclusive armor crafter. Each group has a single armor crafter who provides single unique armor pieces, such as the Dread Mask or the Magma Gauntlets.
  • All ranks: The 50 PvE-only skills and passive bonuses provided by these groups become more powerful with each title rank.

Hall of Monuments

Players who travel to the Eye of the North now have access to a personalized Hall of Monuments that will contain the following five special monuments used to commemorate character accomplishments earned across all Guild Wars campaigns:

  • Honor — The Monument to Honor displays a character's title-related accomplishments and major PvE achievements, such as completing a campaign or elite mission. Character-based titles must be maximum rank to be displayed. The restrictions for account-based titles vary by title.
  • Resilience — The Monument to Resilience displays all Ascended armor sets acquired by a character. To display a new armor set, the character must have the coat, leggings, gloves, and boots for that set.
  • Valor — The Monument to Valor displays all Eye of the North end-game weapons acquired by a character. Displaying a weapon customizes it so that only that specific character may use that weapon.
  • Devotion — The Monument to Devotion can display any miniatures collected by a character. Displaying a miniature customizes it so that only that specific character may use that miniature.
  • Fellowship — The Monument to Fellowship displays a character's Heroes and animal companions. In order to register a Hero on this monument, that Hero must have at least one armor upgrade. In order to register an animal companion, the animal companion must be level 20.

Initially, all Hall of Monuments will have open access to the Monument of Honor. Players can then choose to upgrade their Hall of Monuments by obtaining special Monumental Tapestries from major quests. These tapestries can be used in the main hall to unlock access to each of the remaining four monuments.

The Hall of Monuments is character based rather than account based. This allows players to store accomplishments for each individual level 20 PvE character on their account. Titles that are account based will be applied to the Hall of Monuments of each character on an account.

GuildWiki notes

  • Players must re-accept the EULA.

Update 2 - Thursday, August 30, 2007

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that made it appear as though some characters were invisible.

Miscellaneous

Bugs

  • The Markers on the Map for already completed Main/Primary Quests/Missions, completed Dungeons, and explored zone names on the Preview Weekend are gone on the Map with the Release of GW:EN.

Update - Thursday, August 30, 2007

Playbalance Changes

As is expected with any unfinished content shown in a preview, many aspects of playbalance within Guild Wars: Eye of the North have been adjusted since the Eye of the North Sneak Peek event. For existing live content, only the two following skill changes have been made:

Monk

  • Seed of Life: reduced duration to 1..5 seconds; increased recharge time to 25 seconds.

Paragon

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that caused Health Bars to stick out over the edge of the Party panel when it was sized too small.

Guild Wars In-Game Store Updates

  • Once a Guild Wars account is linked to a PlayNC master account, it uses the currency of the country registered at the time the PlayNC master account is created. If the Guild Wars account is not linked to a PlayNC account, it will use the current IP to determine the currency type displayed.

GuildWiki notes

  • GW:EN Pre-order is no longer available from the in-game Guild Wars Online Store.
  • GW:EN is now available from the in game Guild Wars Online Store. (nb: pre-order discounts take effect in the checkout and are listed in the column on the right for pricing/total costs)

Update - Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that prevented some parties that had received a "bye" in the first round of a tournament from not always receiving their Tournament Reward Points.
  • Fixed a compatibility problem with Eye of the North and some graphics chipsets, including Intel 915/945.

Miscellaneous

GuildWiki notes

  • Players had to re-accept the EULA.
  • The quests Against the Destroyers, The Knowledgeable Asura, and The Missing Vanguard have been updated.
  • This update changed Eye of the North from a town to an outpost.
  • Mesmer Primeval Armor is bugged. The character is invisible on the character selection screen and in the game for some graphics card chipsets.
  • Ritualist Ancient Armor is bugged. The character is invisible on the character selection screen and in the game for some graphics card chipsets.
  • This update also appears to have fixed some major clipping issues with several shields on Monk characters.
  • The major port cities on each of the three continents have been reverted to their original state, before the GW:EN earthquakes.
  • The Armor bugs can be fixed by removing the armor and then re-equipping it.
  • Certain Shining Blade NPCs, including Elder Gretchen in Aurora Glade and Alari Doubleblade in Silverwood, now have audio dialogue when you speak with them (like Eye of the North NPCs).

Update 2 - Monday, August 27, 2007

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that prevented players from removing GW:EN heroes from their parties after the end of the Sneak Peek weekend.

Update - Monday, August 27, 2007

Ended the Guild Wars: Eye of the North Sneak Peek preview event.

GuildWiki notes

  • NOTE: Fixable bug: If a player had an Eye of the North hero in their party when the sneak peek ended, the slot will be "taken up" despite the hero being locked and unusable until the game's release. This problem can be solved by going to an area that forces one's party off (and then mapping back to a city or your Guild Hall), such as most PvP arenas. The Random Arena seems to work best as it sets the party size to 1. This bug has been fixed by a subsequent update.
  • If a player was participating in the sneak peek weekend, and was in a GW:EN city when it ended, they were sent back to the starter location for their character's respective campaign; i.e., Tyrian characters were sent to Ascalon City (Post-Searing), Canthan characters to Monastery Overlook, and Elonan characters to Chahbek Village.
  • If a player tries to maptravel to a city from the sneak peek weekend, they get the message "You may not enter that outpost".
  • Fixed an unintended bug that let players who already added the final GW:EN key to their account play in the preview territories.
  • Re-added the 'Qualifier Points' text and toolbox in the hero panel.

Update - Friday, August 24, 2007

Bug Fixes

  • Hard Mode has been re-enabled, fixing its unintentional removal.
  • Fixed a bug in the Guild Wars store that erroneously showed GW:EN Pre-Order as having been purchased on some accounts, thereby preventing access to GWEN.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented players from purchasing the GW:EN Pre release Bonus Pack in the in game store.

Update 2 - Thursday, August 23, 2007

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that reduced players' ranks in the Gladiator title. Affected players will receive Balthazar faction points equal to the amount their faction cap was reduced while the bug was in effect.

Miscellaneous

  • Characters may now only equip up to 3 PvE-only skills at a time.

GuildWiki notes

  • The option for Hard Mode is no longer available. This was unintentional.
  • The limitations to the amount of equipped PvE-only skills are officially announced with the second update but they were already implemented in the first update.

Update - Thursday, August 23, 2007

Territory and District UI Changes

  • Travel between European and American districts is now available through the District List and the map travel dialog panel.
  • The Change Territory button has been removed from the Edit Account panel in the Character Selection Screen.
  • The District List and the map travel district menu have been updated to include a "More Options" button. Selecting this button opens a new dialog panel for travel to districts divided by territory and language.
  • This panel also allows you to choose which numbered district to travel to, instead of automatically taking you to the active district.
  • Players will now log in to the territory and language of the last outpost they visited.

Bug Fixes

Miscellaneous

  • Added new ranks to the Kind of a Big Deal title track.
  • Re-enabled the reconnect after disconnect feature.
  • The Text Language drop-down list found in the Options [F11] panel now displays all language entries in both your current language choice as well as each entry's language.
  • The Party panel can once again be resized vertically. It still re-sizes automatically whenever members are added or removed.
  • To avoid players accidentally expanding or collapsing groups listed within the Party panel, players must now click on the [+] button to expand or collapse these groups.

GuildWiki notes

  • This update required users to accept a new version of the EULA.
    • One of the changes was to a line in 5(b) that will allow them to close all your accounts if you attempt a charge-back, instead of just the account you're attempting the charge-back from.
    • The other was in line 4(b): added the line "Where possible, your game account shall be identical to your master account."
  • This is a fairly large update, approximately 35.7 MB large and contains over 3600 files.
  • This update scaled the Gladiator title ranks up (first rank at 500), but did not convert existing player gladiator points. This seems to be a mistake as all schemes for changing this title included a plan to convert and scale players' gladiator points into the new scheme. See this link for details on the schemes to scale the title. The changes were reverted in the subsequent update.
  • Rank 5 of the Lightbringer is now called "Conquering Lightbringer" and rank 6 is now called "Vanquishing Lightbringer." Previously, rank 5 was called "Vanquishing Lightbringer" and rank 6 was called "Conquering Commander."
  • Common districts were renamed back to English districts.
  • Pressing M (for world map) in an area that does not appear on the world map such as Sunspear Sanctuary, will show a mini-map on the big map and a button labeled "Mission Map" in the bottom left corner that toggles this mini-map.
  • A slot for Onyx Gemstones was added to material storage in preparation for GW:EN.
  • Earthquakes have begun to randomly occur in Lion's Arch, Kamadan, and Kaineng Center more commonly. When an earthquake happens, the background music changes to an eerie new music track. Along with the initial appearance of Oozes, Rats, and "Reserve" NPCs, this effect began occurring in-game on August 22nd.
  • GW:EN skills work in skill templates.
  • Added a Moa Nest to Regent Valley, and by interacting with it you can get a Moa Egg. For more information and a screen see this
  • Fixed a glitch with male Paragons, which had caused the right arm to twitch repeatedly while using the /bowhead emote.
  • Using "LFG" and other phrases no longer truncates the message when adding it to Party Search.
  • If an elite skill is captured and then the character is warped to a town or outpost, the elite skill furthest to the left on the skill bar is removed if multiple elite skills are equipped after the capture. Before the update, the elite skill farthest to the right was removed.
  • When advertising on the Party Search panel, unchecking and then rechecking the "Seek Party" checkbox causes the player to announce said advertisement in local chat, rather than trade chat, for example. This can easily be misconstrued as attempting to buy/sell in local chat.
  • In this update or one of the subsequent updates over the weekend, the tooltips for title skills were altered to show progression ranges from 0...(max rank) instead of 0...(80% of max rank).
  • Salvaging unidentified armors will produce a rune or insignia and always break the armor, eliminating the possibility of getting an unidentified armor with no rune on it. This prevents selling those unidentified gold armors to others as if they have runes, it also prevents players going after the Wisdom title track from getting double IDs from one item.

Update - Thursday, August 02, 2007

Heroes' Ascent Update

As a part of this play-balance test week, we’ve made the following changes to Heroes' Ascent:

Miscellaneous

GuildWiki Notes

  • Party Search text now appears at the end of the text string. Example: LFG for xx quest (Party Search)
  • Gladiator Title Track description has been updated. It says you earn 1 point per win in Random and Team arenas and 5 bonus points for each 5 wins in a row. This is only a text change. This has been posted as a bug from Gaile on the fansite forums [1] [2]. It is noted that it is a possible future change to the title and that it would affect retroactively those who have earned points in the current system.
  • Size is approximately 4.5 MB.(when you use -image)
  • Added some Translations for the Guild Wars: Eye of the North Preorder Items.
  • You can no longer place preorder items in storage, not even with the item swap trick that worked before.

  • Fixed a bug that caused Observer Mode games to disappear prematurely from the list.
  • Fixed a bug that caused attributes to be listed in red text.

  • Polish and Russian districts have been added to European district list.

  • After this update, Menzies Battle has the added ": 2 = 2" on the end of its description.

  • Iron Horse Mine now has a lag error that causes some computers to experience long lag issues throughout the entire explorable area.
  • There is a minor glitch with hero flagging, occasionally the cursor icon will not change to indicate you are going to place a flag.

Update 2 - Tuesday July 17, 2007

  • Fixed a Party Search issue that caused some players to crash.
  • Fixed the district drop-down list so that it no longer displays unavailable districts and territories.
  • Fixed a map error in D'Alessio Seaboard.

Miscellaneous

GuildWiki notes

  • This update restored the bug which causes the ocean to appear with a random color on the title and character selection screens.
  • In Raisu Palace (explorable) hard mode, party does not get returned to outpost when all members reach 60dp.
  • The Dye Preview Screen no longer allows a player to drag and drop items into the screen to be previewed. Instead one must now preview each item by double clicking on the relevant dye and choosing the item desired to be previewed.

Update - Tuesday July 17, 2007

Party Search

  • Whenever a party enters Party Search, an automatic message will now broadcast to players in that party’s current district. For example, if Ancient Shahmat sets “glf monk” as the party’s description in the Party Search panel, “Ancient Shahmat: Party Search – glf monk” will appear in the Chat panel of players in the same district as Ancient Shahmat.
  • Whenever a party leader broadcasts “glf,” “lfg,” lfp,” “wtb,” “wts,” or “wtt” in All chat, that party will now be entered into Party Search automatically with that chat message used as the party's description. Note however that messages that contain spaces in-between these acronyms will not automatically be entered in the party search window. However, an advantage of this is you will be able to broadcast your message for more than one line in length per entry.

User Interface

  • The Trade panel now displays the name as well as the icon of trade items present in the trade cart, and a warning message now displays when the person you are trading with changes the offer.
  • The Party panel now automatically resizes vertically to match the contents of the panel.
  • The Party panel now maintains the same position it was placed in while in outposts and missions.
  • The Party panel join frame has been moved to the bottom of the panel.
  • Allies and pets are now listed in collapsible groups in the Party panel while in a mission.

Domain of Anguish

To balance the Domain of Anguish appropriately for a wider variety of players, the difficulty of this realm has been adjusted. Some of the changes apply only to Normal mode.

  • In Normal mode only, all world effects outside of the final battle have been removed.
  • In Normal mode only, damage output has been reduced for a variety of monsters.
  • The size of several monster groups found in the beginning areas of the City of Torc'qua and the The Foundry of Failed Creations have been reduced.
  • The Enraged ability possessed by creatures in the Domain of Anguish has been adjusted. This ability now gives the caster +50% damage when below 70% Health, and an additional +50% damage when below 30% Health.
  • Fixed a bug that occasionally caused Mallyx to stop reacting in combat.

Bug Fixes

Miscellaneous

GuildWiki notes

  • The update is very big in size at 569.1 MB and almost 25,000 files. The vast majority of that content are files that will be used in the upcoming expansion, The Eye of the North. It is common for ArenaNet to do so before the release of new campaigns, most likely to limit server load upon the game release.

Undocumented changes

  • The "fix" to Mallyx the Unyielding included a fix to the exploit used to kill him which relied on leaving a Flesh Golem corpse outside the door and then having one party member use Necrotic Traversal or Consume Corpse to jump to it. Now, when the party enters the Citadel all corpses and minions will get pulled in with them.
  • On the login and character selection screens, the sky in the background is a bit darker. This update also fixed a bug which caused the ocean to appear with a random color on the title and character selection screens.
  • The skill icon for Whirlwind Attack has been changed and the damage output at Sunspear level 9 changed from 18 to 19.
  • When sending a skill template to chat, the words "Skill Template:" will appear in bright green, followed by the name of the template in white. Previously, the link was yellow and showed only the template name.
  • Skill description when hovering over a skill now have the linked attribute listed in dark red.
  • When a character under level 20 levels up, the level-up message now includes how many attribute points that character has gained.
  • A "use best texture filtering" option has been added in the graphics tab in the options.
  • Sky effects have been changed.
  • Ascalon Guards now have a new armor set.
  • Monk Elite Woven armor no longer shares an inventory icon with normal Monk Woven armor.
  • All ranged weapons that are upgraded with elemental mods now make the same sound as a wand with the same elemental damage.
  • Necrosis's damage has been increased.
  • Reaper's Mark's recharge changed from 12 to 15 seconds.
  • Shing Jea Monastery and Kaineng Center are now back to normal.
  • Kick and Leave buttons on the party bar have been reversed.
  • In GvG Automated Tournaments you need to have 4 14 day members in your guild, as opposed to 4 members from you guild and 4 14 day people it previously was

Bugs and glitches introduced

  • Much of the skill updates added on June 15th, such as the changes to Spawning Power and Fast Casting as well as the other Mesmer skills, were reverted. This is probably only accidental.
  • Some minor graphical errors were added on the Tyria map. This has since been fixed.
  • Many players have reported a graphical problem that causes characters to appear with stretched or missing body parts. This has since been fixed.
  • In the Fort Aspenwood mission, Siege Turtles did not cast Siege Turtle Attack in some matches. This has since been fixed.
  • Vampirism no longer scales with Sunspear rank, and now does 10 life stealing independent of rank.
  • In the Ring of Fire mission, the updated map now shows water where there is actually normal ground.
  • The Male Paragon's /bowhead emote is bugged. Their right arm will continuously "fall" then reset when using the emote.
  • In observer mode, duplicate party bars will not expand correctly if there are collapsible allies in the party.

Dragon Festival 2007

Attention fellow citizens of Cantha,

On behalf of Emperor Kisu, it is my pleasure to announce this year's Dragon Festival, a three-day celebration of games, dance, drink, and revelry, where we commemorate the dawning of the Age of the Dragon and all those who helped to rebuild our great lands after the Jade Wind. This year, our benevolent emperor has decreed that the festival shall henceforth also celebrate our great victory over Abaddon and his demon forces.
Throughout the duration of the festival, citizens of our great empire can convene at Shing Jea Monastery to socialize with others, partake in carnival activities, and amass Victory Tokens to be redeemed for special prizes. Fans of sport can flex their muscles in the Dragon Arena, where battle prowess and longevity are recognized and rewarded.
There will be no shortage of engaging entertainment, so we hope you make the journey to our lush island and join us in revelry.

Alliance Battles

To better reward players for participating in Alliance Battles even when in enemy territory, we have introduced a new "Underdog Bonus."

  • In the Luxon defense map, Kaanai Canyon, Kurzick players will receive extra Kurzick faction points equal to twice their score.
  • In the Luxon defense map, Etnaran Keys, Kurzick players will receive extra Kurzick faction points equal to their score.
  • In the middle map, Saltspray Beach, neither Kurzick nor Luxon players will receive a bonus.
  • In the Kurzick defense map, Grenz Frontier, Luxon players will receive extra Luxon faction points equal to their score.
  • In the Kurzick defense map, The Ancestral Lands, Luxon players will receive extra Luxon faction points equal to twice their score.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a stacking bug in the Assassin skill Hidden Caltrops.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Alliance Battles from beginning if a party failed to load.

Miscellaneous

  • Deaths in the Dragon Arena no longer affect the Survivor title track.
  • Added Xunlai Storage and faction reward NPCs to Alliance Battle outposts.

GuildWiki notes

  • Many players' Hero Battle tracking appeared lost. They were told they had to re-register their accounts. This appears to go away once you log in and out a few times.
  • Creatures began dropping Victory Tokens.
