item unlocking[]

Hi all,

I am trying to find out how item unlocking works. Is there an article on this wiki about it because I can't find it. There is a few things I am trying to find out. Skill unlocking seems straight forward acquire a skill in PvE and it is unlocked. But with runes for example it doesn't seem to work this way. I have some superior runes sitting in my vault (and I found; identified and salvaged these myself) but these don't seem to be unlocked (checking at the priest of balthazar). As for item upgrades I see only max upgrades are listed what about lesser upgrade items? Well thats all I guess might start an article about this myself. inactive user 22:05, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Why would you want to use the lesser mod? It's not displayed because using the superior mod is better.--AlariSig 22:09, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
In theory, identifying an item will unlock it. For runes, it's pretty simple, but for item upgrades, you can only purchase 1 or 2 levels of it (not-max and max). However, if you id a non-max upgrade higher than what you've got unlocked now, you'll unlock up to how good the item is. Sorry if that's confusing... it is.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 22:10, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
See Unlock for the page with the details.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 22:12, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
>alari I wanted to see what me current max is. I don't have a pvp char so I tried the priest. >entrea It is not confusing at all it makes perfect sense but at the priest I can't see what my highest unlocked upgrade is. For the runes however I have like three or four superiors sitting in my vault which I didn't buy to store. I'd swear I identified 'em myself but they do not show up as unlocked. There is indeed the possibility I am wrong and I got 'em for free but I don't think it's very likely. Anyway thanks for the quick responses. inactive user 23:26, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

days in a month[]

I was wondering how many days there are in a month to determine the age of your character, that way I can find out how many exact days there are until I get my next birthday present.

Hmm that's a very good question, if I had to take a guess I would say 30 but I never really put much thought into that..--AlariSig 02:04, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
You get you're next present precisely 365 days after your last one. I think Guild Wars uses a fairly accurate calendar, probably even including leap days.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 02:12, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't think it counts leap days, because my characters this year have been getting their presents a day early. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 02:14, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Speaking of bdays my war just got her present, only a white but I get a little frog dude to follow me around now.--AlariSig 02:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

So if i have been playing for 23 months, this month being the 23rd, how many approximate days are there until i get a present?

It depends on what day the character was made. --Shadowcrest 02:20, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
(edit conflict) You would basically, need to remember when you created your character to answer that question. I sometimes wish it gave you a day breakdown, because my Ranger has been sitting at 35 months for the longest now. -- Isk8 User:Isk8 (T/C) 02:21, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, why can't they tell you your age, not more-or-less age?Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 02:21, 22 May 2008

Well then hopefully they do that in GW2. Anyways tyvm for your responses, they were very helpful :)

There are, on average, 30.436875 days in a month. Quizzical 04:08, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Gunnar Poundfist[]

I completed Curse of the Nornbear but I can't locate Gunnar Poundfist in Gunnar's Hold in order to get the Quest Truthseeker. What's going on??

Unless the update somehow made him disappear, he should still be there. I had trouble finding this guy at first, too. He's waaaaay over on the east end of town. I think you have to go over a bridge to get to him. You won't be able to find him by holding ALT and walking around the merchant NPCs unless you head towards the bridge I mentioned.
If you still can't find him, take a look at this. You see the bridge on the south east corner? he should be across it.--franc likes tacos 02:25, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

HM guide[]

I was looking through the different guides and was surprised that there isn't a guide to Vanquishing areas. I have been able to complete a few areas, but there are areas I cannot seem to beat no matter what, like Grothmar Wardowns, cannot get the charr groups to fall no matter what. Anyone have any tips on this?

many of the explorable areas have vanquishing tips somewhere in the article. Powersurge360Violencia 03:09, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
If you think there should be vanquishing guides, the solution is for you to write them. It's likely that the reason why such guides don't exist is that very few have the proper expertise. Unlike missions, there's no reason for a character to vanquish an area more than ones. There's not that much reason to vanquish an area with multiple characters, either. Someone who has vanquished an area only once doesn't have the proper expertise to write a decent guide, and if he did it by cheats like ursan blessing, knows even less about vanquishing the area. Quizzical 03:35, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
The other problem is that most areas have multiple ways in which they can be vanquished, and not that many require a very specific strategy. So even if such guides were written they would be of questionable value. Entropy Sig (T/C) 05:10, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Grothmar Wardowns is a very hard area to vanquish. Personally, I did it by finishing the mission Against the Charr. That clears all the mobs in the fortress in the middle. The rest is relatively easy, however any EotN Charr group is a formidable foe. They actually have good builds (unlike most mobs), often balanced parties, good teamwork and if one of you dies it can cascade pretty quickly because of their Gloats. If worse comes to worst, buy a full set of EotN Consumables and you can win pretty much anything with little to no effort... — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 06:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm doing such a guide, just for the sake of doing it, but the problem is that is suck at both writing and vanquishing. but then Here it is. Feel free to edit/add areas. --Rotfl Mao 08:57, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

SLOW MOVING MASTER OF WHISPERS[]

My Master of Whispers moves his minions slow into the battle and sometimes it takes forever to get them into the fight. Does anyone know why this is happening or what I can do about it? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.101.32.62 (contribs) .

You could potentially set Master of Whispers to "Attack" mode, but be warned that he'll frequent leap ahead and aggro random mobs. The AI really has no idea how to coax minions into battle, so normally the best you can do is flag Master a bit forward so his minions get within range of the enemy more quickly. Felix Omni Signature 05:10, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Also, if you pause your movement for a moment, minion master heroes tend to stop to cast Blood of the Master or to animate another minion... and this tends to be another reason they fall behind. -- Isk8 I~sk8 (T/C) 05:14, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I found that Death Nova was the most common cause of MM lag - BotM not so much. The easiest solution is to just flag the MM along, like Felix said, but you can also force the hero to use an offensive skill (if you have one equipped) or use the "lock" button to lock the MM into attacking your target. Either of those will force the MM to interact with a foe, which will cause the minions to attack. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 05:22, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
My personal preference lies in PSing him and sending him in first... after bonding up the minions with Death Nova a bit :P Oh, and he is always on attack. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 15:15, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I personally let my MM fall behind; if he's far enough behind (normally not far at all), he'll run to keep up, and stop casting spells. I don't mind him showing up to the battle a few seconds late when I do aggro, since I generally keep aggro under control on my own... and once a few melee foes have charged me, the minions are more then happy to mimic their movements. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 22:29, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Bonus weekends[]

Hi my name is George.. I am wondering a few things about the bonus weekends...

I played Guild Wars thru the triple key and lockpick drop/and bonus point weekend only to get a total of 3 keys on sunday... I ran in eye of north in factions and in prophecies... I used myself 22 lockpicks and of those only retained 2... So i am wondering how me and my account are supposed to be benefiting from this... Granted, i was able to work on my UNLUCKY title track a good bit, but lets be honest here... That was not the way I wanted to spend my 3x drop/and 2x bonus weekend...

Now i have bought all 4 guild wars games for me and my family 4 times ea... My wife, both my boys, and myself only to find that we just are not deserving of these bonus weekends...

Thanks...I really appreciate that... You have showed me that all i have done is for nothing...

This is not an isolated event either... You had a green drop weekend a few months back... My wife and I as well as several members of my guild got 1 green out of all the farming we did... NICE...

Another thing... You have the ability to change, mod, or ban an account... So why prey tell am I, The Leader of a Kurzick Guild getting several mini siege turtles for bday pets... It is as if u are just adding insult to injury now... Though I can sit back and watch some of the rudest, most unappreciative scammers benefit from all that I am not able too...

I really like the game but if there is no bonus for me to play... Why should I??? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.219.151.29 (contribs) .

First off, I would like to say that I feel your pain on this one. My favorite line when it comes to these so called double this and triple that weekends, is 3 times 0 is still 0. I think in my entire career of Lockpicks, I've maybe retained 1 or 2. Lockpick retention is all based on the difficulty of the area, and normal or hard mode, as well as your titles in Lucky and Treasure Hunter. I have I lousy 1 in both titles, increasing my chances, negligibly. Mini pets are all another game of chance. I've got 2 accounts, and an inherited 3rd account, and User:Isk8/Minipets as you can see there, my mini pet record is not much greater than yours. I have 5 siege turtles and 4 hydras.
The various weekend events all give different bonuses to different areas of play. You will see that typically every other weekend is dedicated to some PvP bonus. Just take it with a grain of salt. Anet is not required to give us these weekend events, they choose to. It is an extra addition to a great game. As to your final question as why you should play. Well first off, I hope you play because you enjoy the game, and not because you expect bonus weekends all the time. Its a free online game, which is one of the reasons I still play it. Guild Wars login announcements/Archive lists every login announcement, which the majority is all the past weekend events.
My last point is, that we are merely a Guild Wars Fansite. No Guild Wars employees work for us, so we can only give you advice pertaining to these complaints you have, and not really get you any farther. I would suggest This official wiki page to ask a question pertaining to your aggravation on the subject. I think that is about as far as I can direct you. Don't let something as silly as a lousy weekend event ruin your gameplay experience. It is a great game with mostly great people playing it. Just go out and enjoy yourself. -- Isk8 I~sk8 (T/C) 14:19, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
{ec}I can understand your frustration, but trust me, it happens to alot of people. while it may seem you only see the persons with the coolest items and everything, really they are a minority. your unfortunate hunt for keys is most likely also not an issolated incident. normally keys dont have a very high percentage of dropping. triple that percentage and you still don't get a high number. the same goes for greens. Ow and as a response to your last sentence. I think playing with your wife and kids is a nice bonus :) Lยкץ๒๏ץ talk 14:30, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I had a pretty disappointing key drop w/e too. I've found that every single chest I've opened has always yeilded some useless weapon..but on another note, how are you getting several mini turtles as b/day presents? I wish I could get some, but I've only been playing GW for about 2 months now. Consider yourself very lucky to be playing with the rest of your family.Khukri 14:40, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
You get bday presents for every one of your characters birthdays, 12\24\36 months after character creation. If you want a siege turtle, you can have one lol. -- Isk8 I~sk8 (T/C) 14:41, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I've personally got a small pile of Miniature Jungle Trolls from my b-day presents. :D All a matter of luck, sadly.
Just a note on Isk8's comment; While the official wiki's "Ask A Game Question" page is helpful, it's the exact same as this page; no game mods answer questions there, it's all answered by normal players (such as myself; I'm a semi-regular on that page as well). If you're really worried, I'd suggest contacting [www.guildwars.com/support Support] instead, although they're probably just tell you it's just bad luck.
On that note, a total of three keys? Compared to my normal drop rate for this event, that's three times as many keys as me. Do you often get keys dropping for you on regular (non-event) days? I'd say you're actually fairly lucky in that regard. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 14:47, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Factions character can't get any quests in Ascalon City[]

Hi, I have a character from Factions that I've successfully managed to get to Lions Arch. I've done the quests I've found from LA and have taken a "run" to Ascalon and Piken Square but I cannot get any quests/missions from there? Is there a particular quest I need to do so I can start from Ascalon post searing like any other Prophecies character as I'd like to meet some friends who've only got Prophecies and have just started playing GW.Khukri 14:31, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

As a factions born character, you don't have access to any quests prior to Lions Arch. You can go back and do the missions, but that is about it. You won't get the primary quests, or any secondary quests before Lions Arch. The best suggestion is to party with them, and have them "lead" the way, as they will have the quests. You unfortunately won't get the quests or rewards. -- Isk8 I~sk8 (T/C) 14:34, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
(edit conflict) As a foreign character in Prophecies, you can do all the missions without doing the corresponding quests; a good number of those early quests are for Prophecies-born characters only, so you won't be able to do them. So long as you meet up with your friends, you'll still be able to join up with them and help out on quests, as well as doing the missions.
If you can just ask your friend which quest he's currently doing at any given moment, hop into GuildWiki and look up the quest; the requirements will tell you if it's for Prophecies-characters only, or if you missed another quest. That's the simplest way to go about it. If you can't do the quest, then just help your friend finish it. :D --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 14:38, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Nope, dervishes can only be created in nightfall. --Shadowcrest 23:36, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
However, characters created in other campaigns can effectively skip well over half of Prophecies, if your goal is to complete it. Get a run from Lion's Arch to Sanctum Cay, get a run through that, get a desert tour, and then do the missions from there. Felix Omni Signature 23:58, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Party Search box help[]

I'm confused about how the party search box works. Only confused as to who joins who's team as sometimes I'm suddenly the head of a team and other times it's someone else. When you click on a persons name in the Party Search box and select "join" does that mean you're inviting them to your team, or you're joining their team. At first I figured it put them into who had the most ppl in a team was the leader, or who was the higher level but it seems to be different every time. What's the best way to work the party search function so I know whether I'm joining someone elses team or whether they are joining my party. I hope this makes sense.Khukri 12:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

I think no-one knows for sure. See Talk:Party. mendel 12:47, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
I am fairly sure that the person creating the party search is the designated leader. Though it may revolve around the join rule where, whoever has the larger party becomes the leader too. I never really gave it much though myself. I am pretty sure though 1 on 1, every time I've clicked join on someones party invite, they have been the leader. -- Isk8 I~sk8 (T/C) 12:57, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

What level is my character?[]

Is there any way to tell how many times you've flipped over the level 20 counter? If you can't find your level on the page Viper mentioned, you can get your XP from your H panel, subtract 182,600, divide by 15,000, and add 23. In other words, level = 23 + ((x - 182,600) / 15000 ). Round down. mendel 12:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, ok I did some calculations, but it doesn't sound right. My hero panel says I have 557,437 xp ( so minus 182,600 divide by 15,000 gives me 24) and add 23 to that and that makes 47. Could that be right? Level 47? Sounds like a lot for a character that's only been around just over a month. What's the sort of xp amount that long time players get up to? And does this extra xp make you any stronger? Khukri 16:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I've got a character with 6 million XP, but I've seen screenshots of ones that are over 10 million. And no, once you're level 20 and have completed your attribute point quests, you don't get any "stronger" - the only benefit to XP beyond level 20 is skill points. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 18:21, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
That's just it: a character with more well-chosen skills to equip is potentially able to adapt better to a given situation. You could call that strength. Then there are the Skill Hunter title tracks.... mendel 21:51, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Search actually searches for all pages that have boss in them, clikcing go will take you to the page by the name you entered in box if it exists.--AlariSig 01:00, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Philosophically, the answer is that if Search worked like Go, there'd be no point of having it. ;-) Sometimes the article that you GO to isn't the one you want, so you need to be able to look at the list of search results even when there is a page that matches the exact name you looked for. Search does that. mendel 08:15, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

How can I get Seed of Life monk skill[]

The Wiki page says that Seed of Life can be acquired from the hero skill trainers, yet the skill itself is unusable by heros. Would they really make a skill available thru a hero skill trainer if heros cannot use that skill? How would a player character get that skill? I have gone to the hero skill trainers listed in the Wiki article, and they do not offer seed of life, not even to heros. So how do I get that skill for my player character?

That's the whole purpose of Special:Wantedpages, to provide a list of the articles that are "wanted" on the wiki. Of course, there are some cases where a link was put in for no good reason and can be removed, but that's up to the editor's discretion. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 14:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Here's the long(est) answer:
These links show up on Special:Wantedpages, and the busy GuildWiki editors are working with alacrity to write missing content. (The lazy ones, of course, couldn't care less). Then of course there are those that delete articles. (Some speak in awe of the "great Builds wipe of 2007".) Click on the red link, you'll get a message that allows you to check whether that page has been deleted. If it has, you have several options. One is to use Template:DeletedLink, the other is to find another page to link to that has the missing content and change the link, and the third is to sit back and relax. If the article hasn't been deleted , you can create it. Write whatever you know about the topic, put the {{stub}} template at the top , and congratulations! you've just been promoted to "editor"! We are friendly like that. Of course, you might find a document detailing a red link policy in GW:POLICY, but I somehow doubt that.
In short, leave the links if you don't want to get involved, but you're welcome to take up editing! mendel 14:38, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Gah, Cobalt's been an editor longer than I have, so why have I been writing all this? ;-) mendel 14:40, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hard Mode ... what happens to my old quests[]

Hi, I'm just about to complete Factions by doing the final mission at Imperial Sanctum but I'm wondering about the other 40+ quests that I still have to do (mostly from EotN and NF) but I have a half dozen or so from Factions.

Once I complete the final mission I understand I can then start over in Hard Mode... will I have to complete all my old quests in hard mode too or should i finish them off first before doing the final mission? Khukri 15:04, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

You can choose between HM and NM any time you want. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 15:08, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Also, if you end the storyline(as in, finish the last mission) the quests are still there for finishing. You can also redo any mission you want. There's no restrictions. --Rotfl Mao 08:04, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Lengthens poison duration[]

My Scythe lengthens poison duration by 33%, but does not actually do poison damage. A fellow guild member told me that it will only lengthen poison damage that I personally inflict, so my hero archer with the poison bow isn't actually the catalyst that I need for an effective poison damage combo... Any insight would be much appreciated. MostlyRock 02:42, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Pretty much, if you want to take advantage of your Scythe's poisonous mod, you need a skill that makes you apply the poison, Poison lists all the skills that you can use, but Apply Poison and Poison Tip Signet are probably your best bets.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 02:56, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I Know I had naga pelts[]

I had a fortunate venture in Hiajun Lagoon, I got 2-naga pelts, and one ruby for my efforts. When I arrived in Kaitung Center, the pelts were gone. Has anyone else experienced this loss of inventory? I would have traded them off to another character if I knew this was going to happen. (Yes I triple checked inventory and possible other culprits in my collection of characters.

Go back, do not collect 2 naga pelts, spend extra time doing what you've already done, it's all inventory...... The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.19.242.163 (talk • contribs) 05:40, 7 June 2008 (UTC).

Skill Template Format[]

i looked at the skill template format page and understood most of it, but i cant figure out what bits are being flipped where and what to do when the profession id is 8, 9, or 10. thanks The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bob657 (talk • contribs) 14:37, 7 June 2008 (UTC).

Explaining complicated technical matters to a user who lacks the circumspection to sign his question is always a daunting task. Anyhow, here goes: Have you looked at the pages linked in Talk:Skill_Template_format#Viewing_the_code.3F? I don't see what the problem is with profession codes 8-10, seeing as there are 4 bits for the code it could go up to 15. I see no flippin' bits, what are you referring to? The information in the article could be somewhat out of date. --mendel 15:23, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

in example Skill_Template_format#Example the person wrote the binary of the skills backwards which made it very confusing 1 sould be writen 0001 not 1000. those with any visual basic programing knowledge may download source here: [www.megaupload.com/?d=YO2YWXKU] Bob657 16:22, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

The problem is the little-endian order of the byte stream (thanks Intel!); if you don't wantto write the bits "backwards", you have to write the template code backwards. Both choices are potentially confusing. --mendel 09:14, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

How to get a Nightfall character to Prophecies[]

Can anyone tell me how I get my Dervish from Nightfall to Prophecies? And can I do the missions there?

First, you have to complete Nightfall quests and missions up to Consulate Docks. Once you get there (on your own, a ferry won't help) talk to the people there, one of them will give you a Prophecies travel quest. And yes, once you're in Prophecies, you can complete all the missions there as normal.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 01:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I'm sorry, but that's wrong. You still have to get to the Docks, but once it appears as a mission outpost, Deras Tenderlin in Kamadan will give you Terror in Tyria, which lets you travel to Prophecies.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 01:55, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
If you have the gold to spend, you can get someone to ferry you as well, if you get ferried to Consulate Docks, and ferried to Kryta from there. But there's not always a lot of people ferrying for one, and two, it doesn't take much time at all to reach Docks on your own, so you're probably best off doing it as Entrea said. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 08:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

I have a new computer[]

I just got a new computer. I have the original guild wars, plus all the expansions, plus extra slots and loot from codes out of magazines. How do I get this moved to my new computer. I was not able to xfer it with the setttings and files application from Windows. Is there another way? I do not think I can find all the key codes to all the products from the past 3 years...

No. BUT: you don't have to! Download the client off the official website or install it with the CD's, then just log in. Everything you had will still be there. Unfortunately, there;s no way of recovering skill or armor templates automaticly, although you can copy/paste them from your old computer.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 02:27, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Copy your Guild wars folder in documents onto a thumb drive and save it in the same place on your new computer. Should work. For the client tho like Entrea said all you need is the client from one CD or downloaded and it will load all the zones and other files for you(as long as your in the account with the unlocked accounts).--AlariSig 02:32, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
If you have Vista (and likely if you have XP, though I'm not sure), go to your user folder, and then \Documents\Guild Wars\Templates and copy everything there to the analogous folder on your new computer to keep any templates you have on the old computer. Quizzical 02:39, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Like most online games, Guild Wars stores all of it's data about accounts on its own servers. No matter where you access the game from, it will access all the same data about your account (campaigns, items, etc.) and let you play just like you would on any other computer. You only have do do this transfer stuff for skill templates, which are the only things linked to your computer instead of your account.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 02:40, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Skill templates, Equipment templates, and Screenshots should be the only things that need transfer. I would suggest transferring your GW.DAT file over as well, so you don't need to re-load every area you've already been to. GW.DAT should be easy to find (right in the Guild Wars program folder), Screenshots and Templates are in their self-named folders in the same spot. You could copy the entire folder over, but if you're tight on disk space, it's not important. (sometimes the GW.DAT file alone can be pretty massive; mine's 3gb here, and this is my laptop! My desktop has an even bigger file.) --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 08:50, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Actually what happens is that logging in kicks the other person off the chat server (appears offline in chat and guild roster) and selecting a character and entering the game then kicks her off for good. Fastest way to get to Imperial Sanctum?[]

Only doing Primary Quests and only doing one side in the Kurzick/Luxon split is the fastest way. Also, accumulating 10k faction ahead of time is a good idea. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 03:12, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

[1], if you want a reliable program and without the logo on the video you'll probaly have to buy something.--AlariSig 22:36, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Personally, I use Fraps. It's not free though (the free version only records 30 sec). A lot of people are using "GameCam". The free version apparently doesn't have time limitations, but leaves a watermark on the movie. Xfire also has a video recording option in Beta stage, and it's free. Remember that recording a video is very computer intensive. The video you record has to be uncompressed, because there's no time to compress it, and a 5 minute video, at 1024x768 resolution takes up 4 GB. After recording you'll have to re-encode the video to have a "normal" size. Windows XP comes with a free application "Windows Movie Maker" that you can use. There are also a lot of payed programs, such as Sony Vegas or Adobe... something, I forgot ^^; But those are professional programs, and thus are very expensive. Xfire has a build it encoder if I remember correct, but you can't edit the video to add subtitles and such. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 04:29, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Farming a good location and selling the items. Unfortunately, this is also fairly difficult, especially for a character early in the game.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 23:53, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
I would recommend getting your guildmates to come with you for Eye of the North dungeons, and make sure someone takes Light of Deldrimor. Not only do you generally profit by at least 4k per dungeon just from selling to the merchant, you might also find gems or rare items that can be sold for 100k+12e and such. Felix Omni Signature 23:55, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
You have to know, that Vabbian armor is one of the more pricey armors out there. It costs way less then it used to (then 1 gem was closer to 7k and not 3k) but it's still more then 100k.
You can earn some money by doing Dungeons like it was already mentioned and Vanquishing areas. Pick up everything the monsters drop, and merch most of them. Also, do all quests if you didn't already. Some of them (especially in Factions and Nightfall) give money rewards, and they provide something interesting to do while killing monsters. This is the most "casual" way of earning money.
Another way is opening chests and selling items to other players. this however requires some knowledge about what is sought after, where do the rarer skins drop, and requires luck and patience. It's a good way to earn some money if you're going for the treasure hunter title, but it also requires financial fluidity for Lockpicks. I wouldn't recommend it to you. Not right now at least.
Finally there's farming. Making a build (you can find some here) may require buying new armor (like the 130 HP Dervish), and also, it's the most "boring" way of earning money (though some people find it enjoyable) but it's probably the fastest.
All in all I'd recommend solution number one to you. Just don't think you'll get it within a day or two (unless you're REALLY lucky :P). — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 15:31, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
There are collectors in the Kodash Bazaar that accept Trade Contracts. The trade contracts may be traded for rubies and sapphires. Do quests in Vabbi to earn trade contracts as quest rewards. Doing that saved me thousands when I bought my vabbian armor. —JediRogue 15:36, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Abuse shadow form to farm vast quantities of ectos. Lord of all tyria 15:43, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Shadow Form isn't in Nightfall, and he's Nightfall-only.
But there are a few Dervish farming builds, for core areas like Fissure of Woe and Underworld... if you work your way up to those perhaps, you can make a good amount of gold selling Ectos. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 04:23, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
It depends on what you mean by the "best" way to earn platinum. I'm of the view that the best way is to just do whatever missions or quests or whatever you find interesting. That will get you all the gold you need and a lot you don't in due time. It's not the fastest way to get gold, but it is the most fun--and that is what makes it the "best". Quizzical 04:52, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Plus you progress through the storyline in that fashion, which is always good. Especially if you're earning up for some endgame items or armors. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 20:41, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Website for price checking the resale value of items?[]

How do you know how much an unusual or rare/collectible/ item is worth on the resale market? I'm often picking up green and gold and other coloured items with an ident value of a couple hundred gold but then I see people selling the same item for thousands. I've always just gone through the game selling straight to merchants rather than reselling to individuals and profiting. What's the best way to figure out what I should re-sell to merchats or what I should sell in the markets for a lot more money. Is there a price check website for what the current value of an item is? Khukri 15:02, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

GW Guru offer an auction buy/sell system, go check their lists out. Otherwise ask random people in public with a price check what they think the price is, dont go by one persons price though, they might try to scam you for a reduced price. -- Xeon 15:19, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

[2], submit a ticket. A-net's usual response to scamming is that its your fault, however. Lord of all tyria 17:48, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Because it is your fault for giving him the item... anyway... Follow the link Lord gave you, and submit a support ticked describing what happened, when, where and with whom. Include any screenshots. Angelin, it's sad you got ripped off/scammed, it cannot be stressed enough, always check exactly what is being offered in the Trade window before clicking the Accept button. There's no clock, timeout period etc, so take your time, if the seller is trying to pressure you into the old "accept quick or I have someone else who will buy it", they probably are trying to scam and hoping to rush you into a unfair trade, it is very much your responsibility as the buyer to take care because are plenty of people who will use the anonymity of the game to get away with unscrupulous actions. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 01:13, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Also, see Scam. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 01:37, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
It is impossible for the GMs to know if the scam trade was the second part of a multi-account trade, i.e. sometimes people will execute one part of the trade between a pair of characters and then do the other part between the other; and it often happens that one party puts something worthless up to in the hope of escaping automatic RMT detection. So it is quite hard to police these kinds of things. However, the nice part about this is that all you lost is "play money", basically; you're not going to get in financial trouble and lose your apartment or car or whatever, unlike the people who get scammed in the "real life". --◄mendel► 06:36, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

I think you need to have completed something far enough into a campaign to be able to change your profession in a campaign. The relevant points are Augury Rock (Prophecies), Nahpui Quarter (Factions), and setting up the Command Post (Nightfall). Quizzical 00:14, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Keep in mind, you need to do more than just reach those locations, for a Tyrian-born character it's Ascension, Canthan-born must achieve the state of Weh no Su, and Elonian-borns need to have completed the Hunted! quest. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 00:34, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Well yes, completing Augury Rock makes you "ascended", completing Nahpui Quarter makes you "weh no su", etc. Quizzical 01:08, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Quiz, my addition was more aimed for Dervish may, ie, didn't want em to think they could walk/run their character to those outposts and "hey presto!" be ascended etc (yes, I've actually had ppl ask me if that's all they had to do :). Though one more thing we should add, for Prophecies (Tyrian-borns), there are quests that can unlock access to other core professions, namely The Warrior's Path, The Ranger's Path etc, which avoids the one-off 500 Gold the other prof changes will charge. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 04:00, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

special weekend drops and awards[]

I hear people dropping out of this game every day if you look in the rooms. I m getting that frustrated with it as well. If you want people to participate in your game and invest this kind of money as i have, my suggestion to you is revamp your quality of drops and frequency. i have all four games linked and i have a blast, but your way out of line here. celgrim

Also; if you farmed and didn't get many special event items, then I'd suggest your farming location is at fault. Although since it is all probability, it is possible that you just had a string of bad luck. (Because all events are mutually exclusive it is actually equally likely that you will get no special drops, or that you will get a special drop from every kill. After you exclude the new zone drop rate thing first) Ezekiel [Talk] 07:23, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
I recall a post similar to this one about a month ago, with the same focus. My response to this has always been anything times zero is still zero. Drop rates always stink on most things in the game, (greens, lockpicks, ect) and just because they put into effect a bonus drop weekend, does not mean you will see these items dropping from every foe. Anet doesn't have to put into effect special weekends for us. They are not obliged to do so, only choose to do so as a reward to players. Honestly, one should take what they can get, and not expect everything to be handed to them. Just play the game and have fun. Don't let some silly drop weekend affect your gameplay. -- Isk8 I~sk8 (T/C) 07:29, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

For example, if you needed Dervish armour you would go to Dervish armor crafting quick reference, Dervish collector armor or Common armor crafting quick reference. If you need to find the quick references again there are shortcuts on the individual Profession pages. Ezekiel [Talk] 11:35, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
If you want to find the crafters themselves then you can simply look at one of the 6 core classes quick references. All armour crafters will be listed by continent in ascending armour level order. Ezekiel [Talk] 11:39, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Reputation[]

So I have 71,000 delver rep. points, and i have a Heroes' Handbook Normal Mode completed. If i give the book to the [talent] guy, i should receive 20,000 points. But after 80,000 points we can only gain points in HM, so, will i get 80,000 points or 91,000 if I deliver the book?

You will end up with having 91,000 points. --Progr - talk 14:28, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Quest Templates[]

I am wondering how the Template works for listing quests in a certain town - for instance, in Beetletun, you find the list of quests simply uses "{{:Beetletun/Quests}}" to list all the quests. Is this a template? - Template:Beetletun/Quests does not exist, so I am confused how the system is working. How does it query the list of quests? Phoenix 19:28, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

It's just Beetletun/Quests. If you edit an article, you'll find a link to everything that's transcluded onto the page. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 19:41, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
The : at the beginning means "this is not in Template namespace". You can have templates everywhere, when I develop templates, I test them out in my userspace and call them via {{:User:M.Mendel/Templates/whatever}}. If you have more questions about templates, feel free to use Forum:Coding.--◄mendel► 19:24, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't use the : on my page, and the "templates" still work. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 21:25, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
You only need a starting : for mainspace transclusions - if you don't give it a namespace, it assumes you want the Template: namespace. The : at the beginning tells it you want a mainspace article. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 22:02, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Armor[]

Hello everybody,

I'm kinda new to guild wars, although I'm a lvl 20 monk/warrior and still doing my primary quests. However, I find that all the armor looks the same. Even the names are all the same apart from that the one has better armor than the other for example. The last time I upgraded my armor was in Seitung Harbor (which means I play Factions ^^).

Anyway, the question: Could anyone tell me when I can upgrade it again and if armor will be different looking as I move on in the game?

Thanks.

Yes, there is actually a huge selection of different armors you can choose from as you progress through the game. Take a look at Monk armor! The first place you have some nice choices of maximum armor level armor is Kaineng Center. Felix Omni Signature 22:50, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Another question about armor[]

Hello again,

So I found the next armor crafter in... uhm, Kaineng Center.

Would it be wise to spend money to buy those sets? Or wait till the next upgrade. (I have like 5k gold which is a shame -.-)

Kaineng Center has max armor. So it's the "last" place to upgrade your armor. Unless you want to get Elite armor. --Macros 00:28, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

charracter slots[]

I have bought 34 slots i use most of them for storage. Your system will not let me buy any more slots. Can i buy another account and how does that work. please respond to my e-mail account masterflrman@yahoo.com

Sorry, we are not ArenaNet. You can try contacting them on the Guild Wars Wiki, which is hosted by ArenaNet, or through their support website.
In response to your question, though, 34 is the maximum number of character slots any one account can have (2 for creating the account, + 2 for each of the three campaigns = 2+6 = 8, + limit of 26 purchased from the online store = 8+26 = 34). To create a new account, simply purchase a second copy of any of the three campaigns, start Guild Wars and click on "Create account or add access key." Check the box on the right that says "Create a new Guild Wars account" and click the "Next" button to enter the product key. After that, it will ask for email address and some other information - the email address you give here must not be the same as the one on your first account. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 18:29, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Double Logging on[]

What happens if you log onto the same account from two different computers that share an IP address?--Land of the Long White Cloud 03:01, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

The one that was logged in first will get disconnected. Doesn't matter if you share an IP address or not. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 05:26, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Actually what happens is that when second computer gets past the password check the first computer gets disconnected from the "online" server, that is, that player's status changes to "offline" and he sees "disconnected" when he opens the friends list. As soon as the second computer clicks "play" on the selected character and the level loads, the first computer gets booted out of whatever level it was in. --◄mendel► 21:04, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Monk needs help!!![]

Hey!! i have a problem, im a monk warrior, and ive been trying to focus on being a healer, but a good one, the problem is that i cant seem to find the right build.. i asked my build, i looked online i tried everything, i have found some interesting ones on the internet, but the BIG PROBLEM is that i only have nightfall.. so all builds i find dont help me at all, i just want to become a monk in wich people ask for ur help on missions and they end happy because they passed something they couldnt do before, so please if u have a great mo/w build ( for nightfall only ) id love it if u could please share it with me, if u dont want to expose ur build, and want to share it privately, im logged in most of the time with the same name i have here thanks --May monk of healing 20:27, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Bold and italics? Yuck... Anyway, let's see... If you want to focus on healing, something like this should do: Oh, and of course change into a secondary Elementalist. You can do that in the Command Post.
Word of Healing Words of Comfort Healing Touch Seed of Life Healing Seed Dismiss Condition Glyph of Lesser Energy Rebirth
Heal others with skill 1 and 2. heal yourself with 1 and 3 (take into account that 1 and 2 heal more under some ciditions, but don't always try to fulfill them, or someone might die.) Use 4 and 5 on people that are under heavy attack. Use 6 to remove conditions, 7 to help you manage energy, and 8 to resurrect OUT OF BATTLE. Don't res in battle. Never.
Now, if you want to go protection (that also heals) use this:
Reversal of Fortune Zealous Benediction Protective Spirit Seed of Life Dismiss Condition Glyph of Lesser Energy Aegis Rebirth
I hope it suits you. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 21:08, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Elite Tomes[]

How do I get an elite necromancer tome? I don't want to pay the 8.5k some people ask for them. Also, can tomes only be used for skills already available to you?

Any Necromancer boss in Hard mode has a chance to drop elite necro times. You may only use tomes to learn skills unlocked on your account. --Macros 02:54, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Can you buy/sell faction points?[]

Is it possible to sell/buy faction points? If so how? One of the NPC's at House Zu Heltzer alluded to people buying faction points, and I saw someone posting that they wanted to buy faction points. Is it possible? Khukri 12:26, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, the NPC you talk about is not really 'buying' but in exchange for kurzick faction points (there more type of factions) provides you with skills, raising alliance, passage scrolls or amber. The last two may be sold to merch or other people. So, that might be called 'selling faction', although indirectly. There is no way to 'buy' any type of faction or to transfer it from or to another player. You have to 'earn' it yourself, or pay to join faction farmer(s)/runners who will do the 'hard' work for you.-- Merty sign-- ( talk ) 12:37, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
That's partially right, you can buy or sell Balthazar Faction in the form of Flames of Balthazar and Golden Flames of Balthazar. Buying or selling Luxon/Kurzick faction is indeed not possible. --Progr - talk 12:52, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Some Guilds will "buy" faction by giving a player a guest invite to their guild, then paying them for every 5k faction they donate to the guild. Not a very common occurance, but there's a good number of Kurzick or Luxon guilds who will buy faction this way so they can earn up faster (for gaining control of towns and outposts). --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 01:44, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Errors on Every Page from ad banners[]

Hello,

I notice I am not the only one, but we are getting errors on every page except home. It will start to load, and then go blank and say it is done. It makes it extremely difficult to navigate and read the pages. The only thing we can do is hit back, and that only shows the page about 20% of the time. The other times, it goes back to the home page (or whatever page I had loaded before trying to get to the next one).

Needless to say, it has made it difficult to even get to where I can post this as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Kylynda 17:30, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm guessing you are using IE. One temporary option is to either use Ad-Block or set wikia-ads.wikia.com to your restricted sites. So yes, I've had that problem also. --JonTheMon 17:33, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I think I'm getting the same error as Kylynda. Last night, it would load a page, then go blank, and if I clicked to stop, then it would reload the page and display it properly. Today, clicking to stop loading a page just seems to reset it, so that it often takes several tries to load a page. I've tried clearing the cache, and that didn't help. I'm using Opera, not IE. Quizzical 18:18, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Well that's interesting. As soon as I made the above post, the problem seems to have fixed itself. Also, when I logged on today, the wiki displayed for me as Monaco, even though I was logged in. I checked my preferences, and it said I was using Monobook, and the option to let the wiki default override my preferences was not checked. When I went back to the home page, it then displayed properly as Monobook again. Quizzical 18:22, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

o also im so sorry, whichever character u might have given me, please give me sec. profesion for it =P thx a lot rlly --May monk of healing 00:25, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

"Go" is used to go into a specific article if you know it's name. "Search" is used to search for a phrase that you know the name of. None of these options help if you don't know what you're looking for. A (very) small discussion about implementing Google search is underway here. In the mean time you can use Google. If you add "site:guildwars.wikia.com" (without the quotes) to your search you can use Googles search help and limit the results to this site. Click me.
As for character... you guessed it: "It's up to you". Look at the profession article. After clicking each profession name you'll be taken to a page that has an overview of what the profession is like. Each article also contains a link to a guide that will help you get better and avoid common problems and misconceptions at the bottom (example: Effective warrior guide). Only Ritualists and Assassins are locked to you, since you don't have Factions. Take some time to read that. Think about what playing style you like.
You can also just make a PvP-Only character, and battle some NPCs and training dummies. PvP-Only characters start at level 20 and get free equipment and skills as long as you have them unlocked. You can use them as a quick way to check on things.
Finally, we don't have builds on this Wiki. You might be interested in PvXwiki. It's a wiki dedicated only to builds, and has a lot of categories so you can find what you like. (Yes, there is a "Nightfall build" category). Note however, that a lot of these builds may not be suited to a beginner, may not suit your style or might have a very specific pourpouse. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 00:59, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Three Musketeers[]

I don't know about the sword and wiki doesn't document prices. You might try guru for prices. Silver Sunlight SSunlight 14:50, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
The sword was a Rapier... I remember a discussion on the subject a while back. Back in Prophecies, that sword never actually existed (presumably a planned weapon or something). I don't think there are any Rapiers in the game to date, although something like the Runic Blade or Tengu Sword could possibly substitute. I was looking for similar-looking sword for my own mesmer (since the male animations look a bit like fencing). The Runic Blade is probably the closest you'll get to one besides an Emerald Blade. I went with a plain ol' Highlander Blade just because the Runic Blade is a bit too long. The Jade Sword is also a bit similar, though the green color is a bit distracting. But yeah, you're out of luck if you're looking for something like the Rapier shown on the box.--franc likes tacos 04:09, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Festival Prizes - value increase over time?[]

Over this weekend when it was 'raining' presents from the festivities of the Dragon Festival at Shing Jea Monastery a couple people were saying that if you left the prizes unopened for over 6 months the value would increase to 5k instead of the 1k that you sometimes find in a Festival Prize. I presume this is not true, but thought I'd check here first. Khukri 12:27, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

I'd say its unlikely, could always test it though. Lord of all tyria 12:36, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
I've opened Lunar Fortunes a good year after I got them, and the gold prizes were still the same. I'd say it's false information.
Another thing that might be mildly important; you can get Victory Tokens from the Festival Prizes, which can only be traded to the festival collectors. Normally a good idea to open the prizes while you can still use the tokens (or you've got to wait until next year's event). --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 01:39, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Salvaging mods from weapons and retaining the weapon[]

Which weapons can you safely salvage the mods from without losing the weapon? Sometimes with various blue/purple/gold weapons I've been able to salvage mods (after identifying) and also retain the same value for the weapon, other times I can salvage 2 mods and the weapon gets destroyed, other times I can only salvage one mod with the weapon being destroyed. Is there any way to tell which ones it's worth it to salvage from. Is there any way to know or is it just the luck of the draw, and if it's just the luck, is it better to sell the weapon whole back to the merchants or try and salvage mods and the weapon for resale. Khukri 11:41, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

There is no safe weapons which never break when salvaged, as far as I know. However, each rank in Treasure Hunter and Wisdom titles give +3% (base chance is 50%?) higher chance to retain your salvaged weapon. J Striker 12:19, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Any weapon has the same chance of breaking when you salvage it, no matter the rarity. When you start to salvage an item for it's mods, it'll tell you in the window that you have a 50% chance of destroying the weapon.
However, there's always a Perfect Salvage Kit, which never breaks whatever it's salvaging. If you're trying to get an item off a weapon you want to keep, that's the way to go. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 12:32, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
But of course don't use the perfect kits on random drops. Personally, I merch most of the mods (without taking them off the weapon), often even perfect ones. Only a handful of mods have market value worth the trouble. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 12:46, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
What exactly is a perfect weapon, and how do you know if you have one? Thanks for all the input so far, esp with the maths, very interesting. Khukri 04:06, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Well that depends. A lot of people consider a perfect martial weapon to be req9 (or 8, or 7) 20% Sundering, +15% damage while over 50% health, and +30 health, but I generally prefer Furious... in the loosest sense of the word, perfect would mean a particular mod's maximum value. Felix Omni Signature 04:24, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Salvage Maths[]

Let's assume you can merch the weapon for 50 and the mod as well once it's salvaged. Then you get 50g if you don't salvage, and if you salvage you get 50g * 50% for the weapon and 50g for the mod, minus 16 for the salvage and 4 for the id on the mod. You now have made 55g on average, that is 5g profit over not salvaging. --◄mendel► 21:58, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Translation: If the mod is worth more than half the price of the weapon, salvaging is monetarily worth it. That would be nearly any mod, though, with merchant prices so low. Rule of thumb: If it's worth the trouble to sell, salvage the mod. If you can't be bothered, sell the weapon.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 22:04, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Your translation is wrong. For a 50g item (weapon or armor), the mod has to sell for at least 45g to break even in the long run, for a 100g item it is 70g, and for a 200g item it would be 120g. So rule of thumb is, if the mod sells for almost the price of the item or more, it is worth it to salvage.
However, my impression is that inscriptions that broke their weapon on salvaging are usually worth more (after identification) than inscriptions where the item didn't break, making salvaging a better proposition than the averages would suggest. I have not done rigorous research on that, though. --◄mendel► 22:49, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
"Almost the price" is wrong too. Break-even price for mods (in theory) is 50% of the item price plus the 20 gold to identify/salvage it. Overall, though, I wouldn't bother trying to sell anything worth less than 500g (usually 1k), but that's just my personal threshold.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 22:53, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, "50% of the item price plus 20 gold" is entirely correct, but then that's no rule of thumb any more. ;-) Want to go into the numbers for people who rank in wisdom and treasure? Because that is when the "half price" rule of thumb startes getting more attractive. --◄mendel► 23:23, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
10g for the salvage is usually a better estimate, unless you're very new to the game, or don't have Factions or Nightfall. You get tons of quest reward items that can be turned in for superior salvage kits in the normal course of playing through the game. Given a choice between selling the kit for 1k or using it to salvage 100 times, the cost of a salvage is 10g. Quizzical 23:58, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
(400/25)+(100/25)=20. It's twenty gold to both identify and salvage, and the average player is beyond the "freebies" of the beginning. Powersurge360Violencia 00:02, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
It takes an awfully long time to use up the ~2400 cheap salvages per character that you get from just playing through Factions and Nightfall. I'm pretty sure that that's far more than enough to play enough to get legendary guardian, vanquisher, skill hunter, and cartographer. Even if you have managed to do that, they're presumably easy enough to buy at slightly over 1k each. Quizzical 04:21, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
I burned through 6 expert kits a day. What is that, 150 uses? That's 20 days worth of freebies, at least for me, and then I'm out for that particular character. And then you have to factor in that many of the quests that offer the things needed to trade for each kit are fairly spread out, and many optional, and you get even fewer people who collect all the "freebies". In many cases, time is more valuable then gold, but I digress. The point here is that the average salvage-kit buying player will need to take into account those maths, because it's unlikely that they still have the free kits. And if they did have the free kits, then they probably wouldn't be here, reading about cost effectiveness. Powersurge360Violencia 04:33, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
How do you have 150 salvage kit uses per day? I'd probably have to spend most of the day playing the game to get 150 salvageable drops (which I don't have time for), and the bulk of the salvageable drops I do get are identified and then vendored rather than salvaged, because they're worth more that way.
But regardless, they're surely easy to buy. I see people spamming trade channels all the time trying to buy quest reward items. Only infrequently will someone offer 200g each for them (other than for trade contracts) to match the vendor value, and it is exceedingly rare for anyone to offer more than that. Quizzical 05:13, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Buying from players is awkward, it comes back to the whole "how much is your time really worth" point. It doesn't really matter, you're arguing a point entirely different from the one set forth in this section, the cost per kit vs. the worth of using it. You are over-complicating a simple equation by adding in more variables and "what-ifs". The point here is that each salvage + id, based on static market worth is exactly 20 gold, therefore, an item is only worth salvaging if the mod is worth 20+50% of the item's worth. Math is not open to interpretation, numbers are, strictly speaking, numbers. Powersurge360Violencia 05:22, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Window appears every time I log in[]

My Skills & Attributes window is up every time I log in, even if I closed it before logging out previously. How can I fix that? It never did that until a few days ago.

Windows positions are saved on the server. I found out that if I close a window shortly before logging off the windows will be in it's old position when I log back in, so the server doesn't save the position imideatly. This may be what you're experiencing. If not, then I have no other leads. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 05:45, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Ursan / Raven / Woven Blessing - empty slots?[]

Are there other skills which are supposed to fill the empty slots? Or is it possible to put my own profession skills in there? 71.179.178.68 20:08, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Your skills get replaced by the form's skills i.e you can't get your own skills into that bar in anyway. }{Ipo™}{ 20:10, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Are there any other ursan/etc skills which are available to fill out the skill bar so you don't have 3 empty slots?
Nope. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 01:10, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
However, certain special skills such as Vial of Purified Water can be added to the empty spaces if you get them while in Ursan/etc. --Gimmethegepgun 05:19, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Is it possible to control the camera view with the keyboard?[]

I'd like to be able to play GW on my laptop, but I haven't figured out a way to control the camera view without an external mouse. I've tried using a gamepad but that's not any easier. BTW, I'm using a MacBook Pro running XP with Bootcamp to play Guild Wars.

I occasionally play on a laptop as well; normally, right-click and drag works to move the camera angle, you should be able to set a different keyboard key to do the same from the options menu. My scroll wheel doesn't exist on my laptop, so I have two buttons also set to zoom in and out from the keyboard. Take a look at the in-game options; you'll find commands for almost every aspect of the game, a good number of which aren't set to keys by default, which should cover most of the control issues you'd have on a laptop. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 04:44, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Geo, the poster stated that he uses a MacBook Pro - no right mouse button. (Well, I'm pretty sure the only mice for Macs are still all single-button... but I could be wrong.) —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 05:18, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Note that I mentioned, another button should be an option for the same thing. :D --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 13:01, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I completely misread your comment then, sorry. —Dr Ishmael Diablo the chicken 15:41, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
I can use the track pad to zoom the camera in and out (two fingers on the track pad does this, one finger for mouse pointer), but I can only see 4 options for camera movement. (Free Camera, Reverse Camera, Zoom In and Zoom Out), but there seems to be no way for a right click. Any idea if that's hidden somewhere else?
Only thing I can think of is if there's an option within the OS (or maybe Guild Wars itself)that lets you map right-click to a key.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 01:14, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I just checked in Guild Wars and there's nothing. You'll have to look for a setting in your operating system or get some other software that lets you map right-click to a keyboard key.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 01:27, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
There's no way to set keys for camera up/down? Because you can always use A and D to move the camera left and right, and set keys to zoom in and out. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 05:13, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
I can get to zoom in and out with the track pad (two fingers up and down) it's just the up and down axis I need, so I can find a way to stop staring at the ground if I back up into a wall or something. I can't find a way to point the camera up.

Repairing Data archive[]

when i ran gw the small window of loading appeared with "Repairing data archive..." and a bar started to grow. It took about 20mins until i could made the login in gw. Why did this happen and how can i prevent from happening more?

This means your .dat file was slightly corrupted. Usually, this is because GW was shut down incorrectly (or in rare cases when your RAM chips are completely borked). Just make sure you close GW properly and it shouldn't happen. --- Ohaider!-- (s)talkpage 14:49, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
It could be because you have broken RAM or a broken hard drive. If Guild Wars terminated really abruptly (like a windows crash) during writing to the file, or there was an error while copying, defragmenting or otherwise messing with the file itself.
If the problem is just a one time thing, you shouldn't worry. If the problem will happen again without an apparent reason then you should check your HDD and RAM. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 22:20, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

What can peaple put on wiki? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Skull20002 (talk • contribs) 03:46, 13 July 2008 (UTC).

For the most part, very little needs to be added to the wiki. If you want to add guides, like you seem to be doing, it would be better to keep them in your userspace until they have a little more content, or if the guide is more of a tip, find an article that your tip seems to be relevant to and add it into the "notes" section of the page. For example, your "Tips" page could be worked into the Earning gold guide and "Easy Dye" could be added in the article on Dye as a note. Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 04:07, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Giant Golem looking character in Town Size, Three characters high looked like a golem.[]

I was in Ascalon City and I saw this character called "Mary Heals All ...." something I don't remember she was in a guild too. The person looked like the size of three characters. What was that it was some type of golem looking thing ? A new kind of huge minipet?? Or do you get some reward for winning PVP. I have never seen something like this. I asked and no one said anything. I thought I could find something online but nothing. Can someone tell me what I saw. Was it a DEV? Well, there won't be anything major to work on unless ANet makes a major update, so you're out of luck there. However, there's a bunch of little stuff to fix up- a partial list can be found here. --Shadowcrest 04:24, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Other things you could help out with are listed on the Community Portal and the projects page. However, if you want to get a feeling for what is daily being added to the wiki, just have a look at Recent Changes: the link here has been configured to show you all recent major mainspace edits. Have a look at some of them, you'll soon see what kind of editing could be helpful. --◄mendel► 22:20, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Please read Everlasting Boreal Tonic and Zaishen Chest to be enlightened. --◄mendel► 01:19, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
Ok, first: The chest is the Zaishen Chest on the Isle of the Nameless, but the keys cost 5k faction apiece. If you are lucky or rich enough to get that many, you can have as many tonics as your inventory can hold, they stack to 250 per slot, I believe. You can make your character look like a golem or norn forever, but only in towns, by getting an everlasting version of a tonic, but that requires insane money to buy or insane luck to get.Entrea SumataeEntrea [Talk] 01:16, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Guild faction[]

I don't know if I am doing this right as it is the first time I have ever asked a question :). Is there somewhere i can look up that tells EXACTLY how faction is added (and subtracted) from a guild and/or alliance? Several times I have noticed upon donating 10K (or more) faction while I am in AB for more we lose a significant amount.

Thanks for the help Kate

There isn't anywhere you can look to see, oh, this person donated this much and we lost this much, but each guild loses 10% of its faction every day. See the Alliance Faction article. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 02:47, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you the link to alliance faction is exactly what I was looking for. I swear I typed that in and could not find it, LOL.

poison damage[]

Greetings,

My Guild was testing poison damage and this is what we discovered. A character was hit with poison bite, a pet attack, and poison arrow, but only suffered -4 degeneration. My question is shouldn't the character suffer -8 for two attacks or -12 for three attacks, etc? Why is this?

Regards,

HSigerson
