Heroes Behaving Badly...

How do I ensure that heroes deliver the final blow to knock off an enemy? For example, after knocking down an enemy healer, MOX will be 1-2 hits away from shuffling them off their mortal coil, so I'll change my target (e.g. using a skill after a left-click or next target via keyboard). Unfortunately, MOX seems to think that I'm making a called shot...and he starts shuffling towards the new target (and the healer restores herself to full health during the confusion).

And, mostly unrelated (I think), is there any way to keep Ogden from sacrificing himself? He seems pathologically determined to stand next to the deadliest attacker while using skills with the longest warm-up times. I've tried leaving him without combat skills, without touch-based skills, and setting him to "Avoid," but he just keeps jumping in. He also has a related tendency to stand next to the party member who is receiving the brunt of AoE damage (not necessarily the player char). I realize that the AI will target healers, but does he have to meet them halfway? (He easily has 75% of the total /deaths in the party and seems to enjoy living with a 20-25% DP.)

Any/all suggestions would be appreciated. Feel free to assume that I'm missing something obvious (or doing something st00p1d). And thanks!   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:18, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Lock their targets by bringing up the Hero-menu-with-the-skill-bar, and click the reticule.
If you don't want your monks to go /wrists, start off by giving them more Health. This makes them less of a target, and as such the most dangerous attackers don't crawl up on them (I have only seen ranged heroes crawl up close by on rare occasions, or when I'm being an idiot again by doing something that requires a brain). I suggest never using any Major or Superior attribute rune on heroes, unless you use "special case" builds like and such as the Smite hero for a 600/smite setup.
Enemies always target opportunity foes; low armor and low health (by racking up DP by being a target).
A semi-unrelated matter: I'd avoid anything with >1 sec cast time on Healers unless it's Aegis/Life/Preservation. Yes, even resses. --- Ohaider! -- (contribs) (talk) 18:34, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Henchmen and heroes will target whatever you're attacking if you don't do something to override it. This is usually a good thing; try only casting and not attacking and they'll scatter their damage, making it take far longer for mobs to start dying. If you call a target (ctrl+spacebar, maybe? I don't recall.), then henchmen and heroes will target that instead of what you're attacking. You can lock the target of a particular hero, but that's for more specialized uses, when you want one hero to focus on one mob while most of the group focuses on something else.
As for Ogden dying, it sounds like you've probably given him a suicide build. If you're going with henchmen and heroes, the most fragile party members (and hence the ones that die the most) should nearly always be henchmen. If you're trotting Ogden out there with 405 max HP and 60 armor, then of course he's going to die a lot because it barely takes any damage to kill him. Give him 540 HP and 70-80 armor and he takes maybe 70% more hits before he dies without healing--and healing is more effective, too. That's enough that he'll survive a lot better if mobs are going after him--and mobs often will leave him alone precisely because of that. Quizzical 19:19, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
It would help to know (1) what exact build you are using, (2) what equipment the heroes have, and (3) what you are fighting (some monsters behave unusually). Entropy Sig (T/C) 22:50, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

(re-indent) OK, I was trotting everyone (incl. my char) out with unadorned max armor, meaning hero minimums for HP and AR. So, spent the plats for upgrades, but haven't gone out with the newly minted pieces. Still, improved survivability can't hurt.

I note that Gwen, equally unadorned, stays far from the enemy and lives to fight another day. Ogden runs up to the attackers before he starts his warm up. Also, while getting pounded, he'll still start another spell instead of moving away first and then casting. So, sure, he might be targeted by the opposition, but he actively maneuvers himself to assist their efforts.

RE: composition & builds. No hench. Main char is Me/El as Fast, Fiery. Gwen as Interrupting Crippler. MOX, shadow stepping tank. And Ogden:

Although I am far from UAS, I will try to remove his long casts. (Rez isn't the problem; remember, Ogden dies first.)

RE: enemies: This has been consistent behavior across all enemies. Crystal Desert, Lornar's Pass, Kessex Peak, The Falls, ... The team can survive his behavior most of the time. Sometimes, it's almost easier to take down nasties w/o him, e.g. it's less trouble for same Me/El build to solo to take down 3-4 Hill Giants.

RE: call targets. Apparently, [ctrl]+[shift]+... allows calling target w/o also attacking. I'll give that a shot. I'm seriously considering spending on a mouse that has programmables - I love my trackball, but it only has the standard buttons.

Thanks, all, for the help — this gives me good stuff to try.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:23, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Dump Smiting and the Necro skills. Good skills to consider: Glyph of Lesser Energy, Aegis, Power Drain, Heaven's Delight, Divine Healing, Guardian. --- Ohaider! -- (contribs) (talk) 20:42, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Yea, ogden's probably running into melee range to use symbol of wrath. Remove hex is a better choice for hex removal on a hero than holy veil. As your skill choices for him seem somewhat limited, you may want to try something like this:

An Update (of sorts)

So, Ogden now sports higher health and armor. I changed up his skills a bit (but I only have skills you get in training Pr/Fa). And, it helped! He still gets chased...but not for long. And he's stopped standing next to Enchanted Hammers. (Course, then I stopped paying so much attention and he promptly got smacked by a swarm of Jungle Trolls.) Anyhow, I don't know which of the suggestions (or mouse dexterity) made the difference...but a collective thank you to all.

Interestingly, I joined a despairing PUG in the Dunes. Two separate parties, two different players controlling Ogden. And both of those Ogdens exhibited the same suicidal behavior: given a choice between walking behind a wall or standing next to a crippling foe, he always goes for the company of the enemy. In both missions, Ogden was the first (and sometimes the 2nd) to die and in each case, there were only 2 E-Hammers or Swords at the time. Each death was caused by Oggie asking to get spanked.

(Appopos of that mission: someone should write an article about the perils of PUGs; as it turned out, the missions failed, but Ogden was never the cause. And, fortunately for all my fans here (yes, thank you both), neither was I. :-) Team work was consistent up until minute 5 or 6 and then, I dunno, maybe ppl panicked or got nervous about the bonus and started going mano-a-mano against the Wurms, only to get slammed by western bosssssnake...and allowing the party to get overwhelmed.

They didn't give me my skill =(

I finally got enough points to unlock the Barrage skill from PvP with my PvE ranger. The 3000 has been deducted, but I haven't got the elite skill on any of my GW accounts! Help!

Unlocking skills with Balthazar faction does just that - it unlocks the skill. You cannot actually use it unless you have a PvP character. Use of an Elite Tome will let one of your PvE characters use Barrage. Entropy Sig (T/C) 06:49, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Additionally, if you make a PvP Ranger, you'll also see that the character has access to Barrage, since it's been unlocked for PvP. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 20:27, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

how do i transfer stored goods from one account to another?

i recently created a new guild wars account (bought the complete collection and decided to do so) but i had quite a bit of money and items in the storage of my old account. so, i was wondering if there's any way to transfer the items and gold or if i have to use 2 characters (one for each account) in different computers at the same time to transfer things from one to the other

you do need to run a character from each account; there's no way to transfer directly from Storage A to Storage B. It is possible to run two version of GW on the same computer by installing the game into two different directories; this method is unsupported by NCSoft and ANet.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:23, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

how to configure GWs to a McAfee Firewall

Wanted to know how to configure A McAfee Firewall so that while running the game my connection doesnt bogg down.

As GuildWars is connecting outbound, McAfee firewall should not affect the quality of connection, most of the problems you are experiencing (I.E. lagg) are probably from your ISP and your internet connection, not your firewall. I'd hazard a guess that it's your graphics card, or a settings error in GuildWars, did you always have this problem, if not, what did you do just before the problem started? (Changed in/out of game settings, installed something) - that may give you a clue to what the problem is RandomTime 17:06, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
It sounds like a per-application setting applied from the control panel for your graphics card. (Which would explain why it only affects GW.) If you aren't sure how to adjust that, let us know your windows version and the graphics card (the menus and options vary considerably); someone here with a similar combo can direct you more specifically. There's a few options for recording in-game video; FRAPS is a game-recording program that's pretty widely used. The XFire in-game chat program also has a video recording option, as well as a good number of other helpful features.
Do note that recording gameplay tends to use a lot of CPU power, so if your computer's not very fast, the video will be choppy at best; just be warned on that. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 21:29, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

traps

By using a running skill such as Dash or any other speed skill, can I run over traps without activating the traps?

As far as I know, only skills that boost your movement speed by as much as Dash (50%) will protect you entirely. 25% and 33% movement speed boosts are still just slow enough to where you'll get stuck if the stack contains a cripple or knockdown. Hi...i have currently been playing my warrior for the past 17 months...but i never received a 1st year birthday mini pet...why is this?

-Rhymek-

There could be a couple of reasons for this, but none of which the Wiki would be able to solve for you. I'd say double check your age on that specific character by typing "/age" in the chat box and check your inventory with F9 in case it got moved to the end by accident. If you can't find it you'll probably have to contact ANet support to see what's up with your account.--Zyanya386 15:03, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
It's based on the age of individual characters, not accounts. When a character reaches 12, 24, 36, or 48 months of age the birthday present is automatically placed in his/her inventory. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 22:38, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Problem loading game

Whenever I click on Guild wars, it loads but then stops and says it had a serious error and can't run, but will be able to send a report to arenanet about it. What can I do to stop it?

That sounds like a corrupted .DAT file to me. I would suggest reinstalling the game, but it will take a while. =\ Felix Omni Signature 03:45, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
You can try to fix the dat file. Create a windows shortcut to gw.exe, right-click the shortcut and choose properties. Skills affecting party and ally?

Why /Report Leechers if You Get Suspended?

If I understand correctly, ANet requires multiple leeching reports to prevent people from false and spiteful accusations. (Apparently, sometimes, more skillful PvPers and/or trash-talkers were getting tagged as leechers by disgruntled opponents.)
Your idea of an auto-suspend for toons-that-barely-move is novel. I recommend that you send an email to ANet from guildwars.com. Near as I can tell, GW team would like to have better/more tools for dealing with free loaders and they are open to suggestions.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:24, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
That would penalize people who get disconnected. There's really no practical solution to leeching- you just need to encourage your teammates to report the leechers with you. I know it sucks, and I hate them too, but I'd rather have leechers getting away with leeching than innocent people getting banned. Felix Omni Signature 15:44, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Command line switch for opening at specific rez

If you set your resolution in the options, it's supposed to remember those settings and keep them whenever you open or close the program (and it should open full-screen by default). Is there a reason why you need a command-line switch to do that? Is it not remembering your settings or something? -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 15:37, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
My GW opens windowed by default, because I close it windowed. I don't see how you'd need a command line for that? --- Ohaider! -- (contribs) (talk) 18:12, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
There are at least four reasons why I would like the option: (1) the memory is stored on the server; if I switch PCs (with different GPUs, monitors), I have to redo the settings. (2) I want to use a different full-screen rez when invoking gw.exe through TexMod. (3) I'm lazy; I'd rather invoke the rez on launch with a keyboard command than to have to mouse-click after I get the login screen. (4) When invoking multiple instances of the exe, I need to make sure they run full-screen at unique rez (otherwise, I suffer crashes, unacceptable FPS, and/or very slow computer).
The argument about GW remembering the settings theoretically also applies to windowed; there's not necessarily a need for that option either. (There are other diagnostic capabilities available for troubleshooting.) Since they programmed the first, I am hoping they also enabled a second option. (A lot of games do this through an INI file; not sure why GW does not.)   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:52, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Hmm. I don't believe there is a command-line switch for resolution built-in to the game, probably because of how the resolution is saved; since, like you said, it's saved on the server, the switch would have to change it on the server every time the game was started. as opposed to windowed mode, which should be saved on your computer.
Perhaps there's another way to set the resolution on startup, but I don't know of anything myself. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 09:40, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

You have to map travel to Great Temple of Balthazar (via the boat icon when you press "M" to bring up the map of the continent), and map travel to from there. Another method is that if you are in a guild, then simply travel to your Guild Hall (which will take you to Battle Isles) and map travel to Zaishen Menagerie from there. Neither way have to be able to excess Battle Isles. Zaishen Menagerie is located in the middle of the top portion of the map, which is between Hero's Ascent and Guild Hall.--74.70.73.106 22:18, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Asuran Reputation Points

My asuran reputation points are stuck on lvl 8. I have 82,280 and it won't go any higher. Any reason this is happening?

You have to do hard mode to gain additional points beyond rank 8. Also, please sign your comments with ~~~~ at the end to help is keep track of which comments come from whom. Quizzical 03:16, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Hidden Treasure Title Track

How about this for an Idea: The Hidden Treasures in Pre and in Night Fall. Make them a new Title: The Hidden Treasure Title Track. An Account Title. Thanks, Abraxis Gold

First off, that's not a question. Second, this isn't a suggestion forum. Third, you'd want the other wiki anyway for this kind of thing --Gimmethegepgun 16:36, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

First off, though not formed into a question, I find your attitude deplorable. You mention "Another wiki". . .got a link to guildwiki.org...part II? What "Other Wiki" are you referring too? I just want a new account title...not too hard to understand. Just trying to make the game a tad bit better. Thanks for your help, Abraxis Gold

Other Wiki. --- Ohaider! -- (contribs) (talk) 12:32, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
It is better to post suggestions aimed at arenanet on a wiki they actually read -- once they have figured out where you can post them so that they're actually allowed to read them. (Have they?) --◄mendel► 09:13, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Pre-loading maps

How do you download all the maps so you don't have to wait 20-30 minutes when you mapped? Please someone help out a noob ^_^!!!

You want to use the command line prompt -image for that. Instructions can be found at Command line. Be aware that it will take a LONG time though- if I was you I would let it run overnight. Felix Omni Signature 04:53, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Unrecognized slotname

Lately, as I have been browsing the Wiki, the page I want loads, then some flickering happens (maybe an ad is loading?) and the page disappears and the "Unrecognized slotname" text appears on the page. I can use the back button and the page I wanted reappears. Any reason why this would happen? Tagger Blue 23:20, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Tagger Blue

This should have been fixed by now... how long ago was this still happening? --Uberfuzzy 03:30, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
it happened several times yesterday (June 3) and lots of times previous days, haven't been on much today to notice if it has happened again.Tagger Blue 19:06, 4 June 2009 (UTC)Tagger Blue
today Jun 5, it has stopped showing the "unrecognized slotname" and just started skipping to a blank page after it starts to load the page you want. It is becoming very annoying, lol 24.116.54.47 20:41, 5 June 2009 (UTC)Tagger Blue

Which Profession

Which profession should I choose. I want a profession that is not fragile, picks off enemies one at a time for the most part, and can solo easily. If this is in the wrong place then I would appreciate it if you answer my question in addition to telling me where this belongs. Thank you very much. SamRosenfeld 23:40, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Pick one for yourself. As a forewarning: soloing does not exist in this game except for farming purposes, you will always be a part of a group, even if it's with henchmen. As for your criteria, Ranger would probably be a good match --Gimmethegepgun 23:44, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
In my opinion, the Paragon is the definition of "not fragile, picks off enemies one at a time for the most part." As for soloing, it depends on what you mean by that, though. I don't think it's a good soloing class, but if you mean hero and henching, paragon would meet your requirements well. I mean, having a shield, tankish armor, and ranged attacks? It seems to me to be the easiest profession to play in PvE. Nwash 05:35, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess I did not really know what I was talking about when I said solo. One more thing. I only have Prophecies. I will get Factions and Nightfall eventually but my main has to be core. SamRosenfeld 20:01, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Then warrior and ranger are pretty much your options. The other core professions are all squishies, and while some have skills to help with that, they don't necessarily meet the other criteria of picking them off one at a time. You could make an earth elementalist that meets those criteria, but enchantment removal would be your bane. Both rangers and warriors can get skills to hit multiple mobs at once, but for the most part, they take them down one of time... (except for those of us who abuse Barrage, but I don't think you can get that skill until late in Prophecies). Nwash 20:11, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
What about an invincimonk? My biggest desire is to not be fragile, but it looks they might actually be very fragile. I am an explorer by the way, that is how I play. SamRosenfeld 20:23, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Some classes are only as fragile as they want to be. Mesmer stances and elementalist enchantments can give tank-grade armor in quite a few circumstances. Rangers probably tend to die the least, if that's what you're after. Quizzical 20:55, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Auction Sites - Like 'em? Hate 'em?

If you have used on of the guild wars auction sites, do you have an opinion about the site itself? I'm considering spending some time selling off storage items and thought it would be easier to use gwauctions or gw guru. Here's what I'm concerned about:

  • reliability: is the website up at least as often as wikia?
  • usability:
    • gwauctions has great capabilities in search, filter, and history (plus all items have pix already uploaded);
    • guru offers a storefront (for selling common items or clearing out storage)
  • action: obviously, the deals will be better (selling and buying) if the competition is strong
  • reputation management: sites like this can live/die if they don't keep the trading fair (maintain follow-up, prevent false accusations, deal with buyer's remorse, etc).

Or, should I visit some neutral forum and re-ask the same question there? Thanks in advance for suggestions.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 05:29, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Add 'Recommended Farm Venues' to each monster article?

Would it be worthwhile to add an 'official' section to each monster article page (or perhaps more detail in the location section of that page) with location/mission/quest farming recommendations. For instance, I recall that you could get a lot of Margonites from a quest near the Chantry of Secrets, but I don't remember the quest name. I was also thinking of adding a link to a monster location map with an overlay to show areas in each location where the monster was most likely to be found - something like the bird summer/winter range diagrams in various field guides. For future expansions, these maps could also show patrol routes/boss locations, etc.

When you are trying to get monster drops for a collector item, it would be nice to know where densely populated/easily reached monsters are located. Also, with the advent of Nick the Traveler, there will be demands for various items.

I will work one up for an area then post a link to it in this thread.

I find this to be fairly helpful, though of course I prefer to come up with my own builds. Entropy Entropy Sig 2 (C) 23:56, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
We had a discussion recently, I think TEF was involved, and it might have been on the Community Portal talkpage. I seem to recall that farming suggestions should be on the monster page. --◄mendel► 01:10, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Why does Dunkoro run away from me?

I often go out farming with dunkoro as a 600/smite team flagging him where appropriate. But when I cancel his flag, he doesn't run towards me, he seems to run in the opposite direction and out of sight of the radar map causing me to lose the enchants he put on me. He seems to run a far bit before he turns around and comes to me. Is this normal behaviour for him? 173.69.211.154 16:14, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

I've seen this happen with every hero that I flag near the edge of the compass. Just flag him next to you first, prior to cancelling the flag altogether (or don't cancel it at all) to prevent this silliness. --- Ohaider! -- (contribs) (talk) 16:18, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Stack split window

The stack split window keeps coming up, when I'm dragging and dropping in my inventory, also my map travel is flickery, anyone else getting this problem? Thoughtful's RT sig testTalk 19:04, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Try tapping your shift key, sometimes Guild Wars or other programs think you're holding a key down when you aren't. Other than that, no idea. Skippster 20:21, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Seems to work! Thoughtful's RT sig testTalk 21:34, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

the darknesses

I did the tomb of primviel kings and killed the darknesses but didnt not get a drop from two of them and third drop was not unique. Do i have to go in Hard mode for then to have"100% chance of unique items"?

They probably got assigned to your henchmen and heroes. Entropy Entropy Sig 2 (C) 01:51, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
There is no way to get a "100%" chance of unique items drop anywhere. Even if you are soloing, although the chances will be very high. AFAIK HM will not change the chance of this.-- Merty sign-- ( talk ) 06:29, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
The Darknesses are special mobs. They will always drop at least one green item when you defeat them. Entropy Entropy Sig 2 (C) 08:17, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Abandoned Missions

how can i resume or recall abandon missions? -- unsigned comment of 98.214.242.221

(I took the liberty to change the wiki coding of your question). Well, the only way to get them back is to get them from the source again. If you don't remember where you got them from, check this wiki where to get it (again). -- Merty sign-- ( talk ) 06:25, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Tomes

I baught the Guild Wars quests and missions bonus pack, got the tomes but where do you start? I done the Great Northern wall mission again yet my tome stays empty. How do you start filling up the pages of the Flameseeker prophesies?

Because there are so many missions in Prophecies, they had to split it up into two books. The early missions all go into Young Heroes of Tyria, and the missions from D'Alessio Seaboard on go into The Flameseeker Prophecies. Felix Omni Signature 23:40, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
And Young Heroes of Tyria requires you to play hard mode, which you can't do until you complete a campaign. As for the other books, the missions in the beginning areas just don't count. Nwash 11:30, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

PvP armor

Where do you go to better looking PvP armor for your chars?

You talk to Tolkano and buy PvP armor with Tournament Reward Points. I'd only suggest doing it if you are absolutely sure about keeping that PvP character, though, since it does not apply account-wide. Entropy Entropy Sig 2 (C) 20:40, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
