Can't edit pages![edit source]

Page: All

Problem: Whenever I try to edit any pages (talk pages, article pages, my userspace pages, anything), I get the following message, in red (line split is just for readability):

Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. Please try again.
If it still doesn't work, try logging out and logging back in.

(This appears where the preview warning would appear if I hit "preview" instead of saving.)

I can't use my account. At all!

Comments: Needless to say, logging out and logging back in doesn't do anything. I've tried this on various pages, I've tried this with minor turned on/off, I've tried it with preview and without. Looks like my account is just borked. I didn't change anything since my last successful edit.

Looking at the bug report above mine, it seems to be the same issue. — 130.58 (talk) 03:43, 12 October 2006 (CDT) // 03:43, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
At the very bottom of each page I view the followng error message appears:
Warning: Unknown: write failed: No space left on device (28) in Unknown on line 0
Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct () in Unknown on line 0
No space left on device? Is the HD on our server full? -- Tetris L
In any case, what's weird is that anonymous users are still able to edit while registered ones aren't. -- Tetris L

I pages aren't loading for me either, I need to get at them through edit or history :/ 06:38, 12 October 2006 (CDT)

There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please hit "back" and reload the page you came from, then try again.

^ Unprotecting &mdash Skuld 06:42, 12 October 2006 (CDT)

The insufficient disk space remark was, according to Fyren, caused by the PHP's sever being full, not the Wiki DB server itself. This is why the articles could be edited, but registered users could not edit. The server was trying to update our cookies with session data but could not due to lack of space. Not sure if it's fully solved or partially solved or whatever. --Karlos 13:06, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
Has not been resolved yet! I still can't edit from my account. In addition, many articles display a blank page, this one included. I managed to work around this by calling edit link manually. 06:30, 13 October 2006 (CDT)
How about a note on the main page? -- Tetris L

Gravewit says he has purged the mediawiki caches and that this should solve the issue. Things seem to be working for me. Please update if otherwise. --Karlos 19:44, 13 October 2006 (CDT)

Wrong permissions[edit source]

Probably caused by the recent update to 1.7.1, but now the permissions on the server are all wrong. Visiting the Special:Upload page gives me this: The upload directory (/usr/home/guildwiki/public_html/images) is not writable by the webserver.. Also, I think this image shows what I mean. — Galil Ranger 21:43, 16 July 2006 (CDT)

Looks like that initial problem was fixed, but now the old upload bug is back, but for everything that I try to upload.
Could not copy file "/var/tmp/phpBX57TC" to "/usr/home/guildwiki/public_html/images/7/77/Plague_Remedy.jpg".
As an example. --Rainith 00:37, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
I'm also seeing several problems with images. Randomly, some pages seem to have problems with their images (one example of many: Dragon_Mask).
I also noticed that the menu in the "navigation" and "toolbox" sections appear to have been reset, as "Report a Bug" no longer shows in the toolbox. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 00:47, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Some (all?) old versions of image are no longer available also (even though they are listed still). --Rainith 00:48, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
The link to the forums is gone. Here are some more pages where the failed-to-load images are preventing edits: Akin Broadcrest and Tahnnakai Temple (outpost). --Ab.Er.Rant @ User:Aberrant80 (msg) 01:46, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Dunno if this helps but same thing is happening to The Falls. --Vortexsam 02:08, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Err... what I meant was that after saving it, there' a bunch of error messages --Ab.Er.Rant @ User:Aberrant80 (msg) 01:54, 17 July 2006 (CDT)

Hope you don't mind I cleaned up your post a little. Anyway, all of these errors are due to wrong permissions set on the server and shouldn't take long to fix, once Gravewit notices this. Hopefully that is soon.
I also noticed some templates doesn't work any more. R gives this: Ranger. — Galil Ranger 07:22, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Edit: And neither does displaying of external images so configuration seems to be reset too. — Galil Ranger 07:29, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Now also, every now and then, I get redirected to the Main Page, where there is a text that says "GuildWiki has a problem." behind the page-bar at the top (with the edit button, etc) and in the title of the window. — Galil Ranger 08:02, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Note: Galil, You mentioned external images. I spotted in the release notes for v1.7.1 that external images are disabled by default as a security measure. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 08:52, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
I am aware of that, I just thought that was the default in the last version too (1.6.3 was it?) and that Gravewit had changed it. — Galil Ranger 10:43, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Just as a note, the last version we had (according to the Special:Version page) was 1.6.1 so that could explain why this wasn't an issue before. --Rainith 11:09, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
My user page also doesn't show any images of my char's now. I just noticed also that all the faction skill icons have reverted back to their previous non-high resolution versions. How is that possible? --SK Monk-icon-small.png 08:23, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Newer images seem to cause trouble. I change Divine Symbol yesterday I think and it shows the old image as it was mine.--├ Aratak 09:02, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Well that's the odd thing. Images are stored on the file system rather than in the database. These technically can't be changed back unless someone has restored an old copy of the images from an old backup. Maybe the Wiki site admins had to do a restore for some reason. Im not sure but when updating images doesn't the Wiki software actually overwrite the older version of the image making a restore the only solution as to why old images are back? --SK Monk-icon-small.png 10:26, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Should be so. And could be a restore, cause I remember my user-page had 800+ views before the update, now it's down to 600-ish. It can't be a full restore though, as new pages and edits still remain. About the icons, I actually started thinking that they weren't high-res, so I've remade half of the factions icons already... >.> — Galil Ranger 10:43, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
Edit: And actually, images can be reverted to a previous version even if they aren't stored in the database. The information about the images' versions and locations still exists in the database. I think the whole reason most images will not show up is related to my first post in this section, namely wrong permissions. Thus it cannot resize images and cache them on the server, resulting in references to caches that doesn't exist. — Galil Ranger 10:50, 17 July 2006 (CDT)
To refer back to one of my post, the resize shouldn't matter since it does the same thing with the not resize image, not the thumb, see Tribal axe , the old image is resize to fit the size of the new image I uploaded yesterday. When I try to load Skuld image I get a 404 and mine come out as the Skuld one.—├ Aratak 15:16, 17 July 2006 (CDT)

This looks fixed, yes? 23:20, 17 July 2006 (CDT)

Most of them are fix but there still something broken. I saw this one Divine Symbol.jpg and Divine Symbol.jpg. They are the same image and 150px
The newer version had been uploaded just after the upgrade, and likely didn't populate all the tables completely. By reverting back to the older version, then back to the newer one, it seems to have reset the info so that both images correctly appear the same (just sized differently). --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 15:05, 19 July 2006 (CDT)
That was easy! Thank you. Now I can go back to work on that freaking Infobox├ Aratak 15:12, 19 July 2006 (CDT)

Image Memory Problem[edit source]

Noticed trying to get into a few articles this lil' error message Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 12582912 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in /usr/home/guildwiki/public_html/includes/Image.php on line 1150. Passing the buck :P --Gares Redstorm 17:28, 6 May 2006 (CDT)

:Those images are too big. Please report exactly which images are causing the trouble. -PanSola 10:04, 9 May 2006 (CDT)

Thats what I figured, but I can't get into the article to remove them or even find which ones are causing the trouble. Try opening the article, The Falls. The only think I can think of is that someone placed image(s) of the Balthazar shrine and such on one page. --Gares Redstorm 11:02, 9 May 2006 (CDT)
The Falls page has been fixed by Tanaric. --Rainith 21:20, 14 May 2006 (CDT)
In the particular case of The Falls, the offending image is :image:The_Falls.JPG, but I think it's associated with the other problems the server is having, which reduces the available memory used to display images. -PanSola 00:58, 15 May 2006 (CDT)

Mis-floating Categories[edit source]

Floating Bar Bug.JPG

Page: Previewing some pages.

Problem: Sometimes in preview, the bar showing the categories will float on top of the edit box for the article. Adjacent is an example.

Comments: This is reminicent of the old problem we had with the About Disclaimr bar. I am sorry, it does not appear consistently so I cannot pin one article where it always happens.

(Not so) Special pages[edit source]

Page: Special:Specialpages

Problem: The Special pages page seems to be missing all the normal special pages. I see the Admin special pages, but none of the normal ones.

Comments: Someone else mentioned this somewhere, but I wanted to put in an official report.

This seems to work for me now. It's been working every time since I upgraded to 1.6.1. Can anyone clear their cache, test it, and confirm? Gravewit 08:54, 9 April 2006 (CDT)
I'm still having issues with it. Even after clearing my cache. In fact I can clear my cache and have it change, irregardless of what it was before. i.e. If I have all the special pages, I clear cache and refresh and they're gone. If I repeat that, they come back. --Rainith 19:58, 9 April 2006 (CDT)
This is still an issue for me. Fortuneately, I had added most of the ones I needed to my user page; but that doesn't help everyone else. --Barek 20:26, 9 April 2006 (CDT)
This problem had been resolved (I think), but with the 1.7.1 upgrade, it has re-surfaced. I still have most of the special pages linked from my userpage; but the general special pages link needs to be fixed again. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 01:01, 17 July 2006 (CDT)

Is the timezone setting do not work when posting in talk, discussion? It's hard for non-CDT people to keep track of things. Maybe we should switch to UTC instead? --- Laibcoms (talk | Contribs) 23:28, 5 August 2006 (CDT)
No matter what timezone is used, the majority of the users won't be in it. :) —Tanaric 23:46, 5 August 2006 (CDT)
Switch to GMT and be done with it :P <LordBiro>/<Talk> 06:39, 6 August 2006 (CDT)
Honestly, I'm quite surprised the server isn't already on UTC. The vast majority of *nix servers in the world are set to UTC. I hope to any deity listening this thing isn't running on a Windows server. —Tanaric 10:19, 6 August 2006 (CDT)
Nah, switch it to PDT/PST as that is the time Guild Wars runs on. And the fact that I'm on the west coast has nothing to do with this suggestion, at all, really, it doesn't. *wink* --Rainith 18:10, 6 August 2006 (CDT)
Hehe. Well we can either set the GW Wiki's default time to UTC/GMT or set it to GW server's default time, PDT/PST. But I prefer UTC/GMT because it doesn't have DST settings and it makes it easier for the rest of the community to convert it to their proper timezone. For example, our country is UTC+8, given any time under UTC, I can easily compute it to our local time. Unlike say PDT/PST, or CDT, EST, etc. the rest of the community isn't familiar with the DST settings of the USA, much more, it isn't part of our culture so regardless if we know how DST works, it won't be a second-nature to the rest of the community to think "its DST in the US, +/- 1 or 2 hours". ;) So if we'll have a vote, UTC/GMT for me. --- Laibcoms (talk | Contribs) 23:23, 7 August 2006 (CDT)
And even in those parts of the world that do use DST, they don't all start and end it on the same weekends. Much cleaner to just avoid that mess and use UTC/GMT. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 02:23, 8 August 2006 (CDT)
GMT please, many of us here in Asia have no idea what kind of timezones the US uses as standard. Kessel 11:14, 12 August 2006 (CDT)

Missing Images[edit source]

Page: various, for example :Image:Afw.jpg

Selecting skins prevents login[edit source]

Page: All on site

Problem: I was playing with my account preferences (timezone, etc) and saw the option for skins. I selected one to see what it looked like, and clicked "Save". Now the only way that I can access the site is by deleting the cookie for Once I attempt to login again, the cookie is re-created, I am unable to access the site, and I receive the following error message:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class skinmonobook in /usr/home/guildwiki/public_html/skins/MonoBook.php on line 25

Comments: While I knew to delete the cookies in order to regain access, how many users have done the same as me and did not know to delete the cookie? I realize that for the technical minded out there, it's hard to imagine anyone not knowing to do that; but there are a lot of people whose only thought when cookies are mentioned is wondering if they're penut-butter or chocolate chip. I can't help but wonder how many might be out there that lost access to the wiki due to this bug, and now are effectively blocked from even viewing it anymore. -- 00:45, 8 March 2006 (CST) (username: "161.88.x.x")

Is this still affecting people? The problem seems to be when you make your own skin but don't change the class name. I can delete the skin you made, and that will fix the login problem. Gravewit 08:53, 9 April 2006 (CDT)
What causes this is making a new skin and naming it 'MonoBook'. That breaks stuff. I think it's fixed now. Would someone like to confirm? It's let PanSola log in again just fine, but I'd like some more confirmation. Gravewit 14:56, 11 April 2006 (CDT)

Possible Fix: SpamBlacklist

I've gotten SBL to install on my test mediawiki installation without too much trouble. — Stabber 05:22, 28 March 2006 (CST)
An easier way to take care of the problem is to disallow anonymous edits. -- James Sumners 22:12, 28 March 2006 (CST)
You think that will really help? A load of them post by name. — Skuld 22:30, 28 March 2006 (CST)
Hmm, I hadn't really been keeping up with the spam posted here so I didn't realize they were using accounts. -- James Sumners 00:40, 29 March 2006 (CST)
I would estimate that at least 95% of the spam and vandalism is posted from anonymous IPs. Just look at Special:Log/block to see a list of users that have been banned for varying amounts of time. -- 01:03, 29 March 2006 (CST)
Of course, if you did require a logged in account, that could just make the spam harder to police. Currently, you can look at the Special:Recentchanges and give special attention to anon postings. Requiring logged in accounts just requires the spammer to write a script to automatically walk through the set-up screens for creating accounts. Spam continues, but the likely candidates for extra scrutiny are harder to spot. -- 01:15, 29 March 2006 (CST)
Oh yeh, every IP edit I see is a potential spam edit, yay for paranoia! — Skuld 01:49, 29 March 2006 (CST)
Sadly, that is how I react to IP posts. I certainly don't consider all IP posters to be spammers, actually very few IPS posters are spammers, but most spammers are IP posters (and yes, I see the irony in my using an IP address) -- 07:11, 29 March 2006 (CST)
I disagree with IP-based blocking on principle. It makes the baby Wikisus cry. Filter the spam, not the potential spammer. — Stabber 01:07, 29 March 2006 (CST)
I agree with Stabber, just look at the flow of Spammer. Has it ceased? Has it decreased? Has all the blocking actually made Skuld feel any safer? :) I don't know what that SBL thing does (and no Stabber I didn't click on the link), but I imagine it basically reviews submitted edits to prevent the Spam edits from taking place, regardless of IPs. --Karlos 07:02, 29 March 2006 (CST)
Bump! SpamBlacklist is an utterly trivial 90% solution to spam links. F G 22:42, 6 April 2006 (CDT)

We've been using BadBehavior for a long time. Gravewit 04:37, 7 April 2006 (CDT)
Interesting, but that doesn't really address the issue of spam zombies. Can I truly not talk you into installing SpamBlacklist? It is simply a matter of:
require_once( "$IP/extensions/SpamBlacklist/SpamBlacklist.php" );
$wgSpamBlacklistFiles = array(
"", // Wikimedia's list
"DB: guildwiki_db_name GuildWiki:Spam_blacklist", // our list
  • Creating GuildWiki:Spam blacklist and adding all the stupid spam URLs like the one.
Should take five minutes tops! — Stabber (talk) 05:16, 7 April 2006 (CDT)
For some reason enabling SpamBlacklist gives me the "cannot modify headers" error(s). I've tried it without BadBehavior, and a bunch of other ways, I can't quite get it working. Gravewit 08:46, 9 April 2006 (CDT)
Hmm... I did exactly what I said above with a test vanilla MediaWiki 1.6.1 installation and didn't get those errors. Checking the source now to see what would cause "cannot modify headers" errors... — Stabber (talk) 08:53, 9 April 2006 (CDT)

Pages not updating[edit source]

Page: Special:Recentchanges and other pages

Problem: 2 part problem, first changes are not showing up in Special:Recentchanges, at all. Looks like the last change was made at 6:56pm PDT. (This could be very bad if we got hit with a spambot attack right now.) Also pages are not showing edits made to them until you refresh your browser's cache (at least this is what is happening to me).

Submitted By: --Rainith 21:37, 8 April 2006 (CDT)

Part 1 is a feature, not a bug. Gravewit fixed the server time, which involved rolling back the server time by 14 hours or so. However this change isn't retroactive, so "newer" changes are found earlier, set your recentchanges to dispaly 1000 changes from the last 2 days will enable you to see stuff.. Part 2 is probably related to teh same thing. If the browser's cached copy was last modified April 9th, and the copy on server was last modified April 8th, the browser decides to just not do the fetch. -PanSola 22:46, 8 April 2006 (CDT)
Ah, I see. I have to say it is nice to finally have the server time be correct.... no more having to adjust the time by X hours a 3 minutes. --Rainith 23:04, 8 April 2006 (CDT)
Yeah, I was going to post something about it, but by the time I noticed we were only about an hour away from it 'catching up' and working again. Gravewit 12:50, 9 April 2006 (CDT)

Woah, is this fixed now? I don't even know what I did. Gravewit 02:37, 23 February 2006 (CST)
I don't know what happened with the move to the new server, but MediaWiki default created a bunch of pages like MediaWiki:Sectionlink which caused the messed up characters to appear. It seems that the way to fix that is to delete those specific pages.
The full list of these pages is in Special:Allmessages. There are only one or two other rare messages that are still garbled up. Seems like the only way to catch 'em all is by a brute-force linear traversal. — Stabber 04:37, 23 February 2006 (CST)

It is usually as simple a fix as changing the capitalization of the extention to fix it. If you were trying to upload "Picture.jpg" change it to "Picture.JPG" It would be nice if we could add info about this to the Upload page. --Rainith 02:20, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Submitted By: --Rainith 14:16, 16 October 2005 (EST)

Notes: I can not confirm that this has to do with file name length. This bug seems to happen randomly to me, with short and long file names alike. --Tetris L 01:32, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

Problem I've had the same problem, any solution?

See GuildWiki:Software & Technical Issues/Bugs#Upload Error for a workaround.
This bug doesn't exist on other MediaWiki installations I have tested. My conjecture is that it is a permissions issue with certain subdirectories under images/. See also: :Category talk:Upload errors. — Stabber 09:30, 2 March 2006 (CST)

This is a long report: I decided to trawl through the Mediawiki source code to see what the bug was. First of all, I was able to duplicate the bug -- it has something to do with the wfSharedUploadDirectory flag.

After lots of instrumentation and whatnot, it appears that the problem is with the mkdir() function and how it operates in safe_mode. The relevant function is wfImageArchiveDir (and friends) in includes/Image.php. If you instrument the various mkdir() calls there (or simply comment out the wfSuppressWarnings()), then you will see that some mkdir() calls fail with a warning. The reason, according to the mkdir documentation is that in safe_mode it requires the parent of the mkdir to be owned by (not merely writable by) the same user that the apache process itself runs as. A similar restriction exists for all the file munging operations.

Now, my suspicion is that the images/* directories for the root uses are not actually owned by the user the apache process runs as. On my Debian box, this is the www-data user. I dunno what FreeBSD uses -- probably nobody. In this case, the fix is:

chown -R nobody /path/to/wikiroot/images

This fixed the bug on my test wiki. There won't be additional security issues with this, as presumably these directories were already writeable by user nobody. Can you try this and see if :Image:DistractingShot.png (for eg.) is uploadable as :Image:Distracting Shot.png now? — Stabber 08:34, 14 March 2006 (CST)

Bump. Please either (a) confirm that you've tried this and it has had no effect, in which case some more debugging and brainstorming might bear fruit, or (b) state that this will not be fixed so we can start using one of the suggested workarounds. Thanks. — Stabber (talk) 03:30, 8 April 2006 (CDT)

Timezone display problem[edit source]

Page: All pages

Problem: The times inserted by the server appear to be UTC+8 (Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.) times, but they are flagged as "CST", which I assume is "Central Standard Time". Either the server should be made aware of its own timezone, or it should print timezones as "UTC+8".

Comments: I'm researching the fix at the moment. Will update this comment when I figure it out.

Submitted By: — Stabber 04:22, 10 March 2006 (CST)

This seems to be a server misconfiguration rather than a mediawiki bug. How hard would it be to configure ntpdate or something on the server to sync the correct time with various global atomic clocks? FreeBSD documentation for this in case you need it. — Stabber 09:01, 14 March 2006 (CST)
Bumping this issue. It's really annoying since MediaWiki ignores user settings that try to go more than -12 hours, and I think California is 21 hours behind Hong Kong. -SolaPan 20:10, 6 April 2006 (CDT)

MediaWiki Version[edit source]

Page: All pages.

Problem: The latest version of MediaWiki is 1.6.1. This version includes security updates. The version of MediaWiki that GuildWiki is running is 1.5.0.

Comments: I believe the software should be updated. Security fixes of any kind are important. Especially when one of the fixes is "Fix for remote code execution bug in 1.5 branch."

Submitted By: James Sumners 04:32, 10 March 2006 (CST)

Just a bump for this. 1.5.0 is vulnerable to a remote code execution flaw. What this basically means is that any attacker can if desired, run whatever they want in the context of the wiki user. This allows them to for example, delete the entire wiki, stick malicious code in there, delete all the admins, whatever they want. Even worse, it's possible to just use this vulnerability to stick their own code on the box, and use it as a zombie, spamming other sites much like this one is being spammed. Please upgrade! LordKestrel 01:48, 5 April 2006 (CDT)
Can you use this vunerability to upgrade the wiki? -SolaPan 10:50, 5 April 2006 (CDT)
Theoretically, yes. No way in hell would I ever do that though, it opens me up to far too much potential legal trouble. LordKestrel 15:02, 5 April 2006 (CDT)
There is now an even newer version available with even more security fixes. This should really be addressed. -- James Sumners 22:37, 6 April 2006 (CDT)
Updating this website is not as simple as just replacing a couple files on a server. There's custom code here, and I have to do a little bit of work on it before we update to 1.6.1. I am/will be aware when MW is updated, since I am on the mailing lists, read the blogs, and contribute. Don't worry about it. Gravewit 01:39, 7 April 2006 (CDT)
That said, I got bored at work today and took a couple hours to do it. It seems to have fixed the special pages bug, which is nice. Gravewit 04:34, 7 April 2006 (CDT)

It's something on Gravewit's end. Temporarily, until he fixes his URL rewriting scheme, you can access all the categories by editing the URL for the category yourself. Problem: The bottom bar that has the ArenaNet and MediaWiki logos is floating in the middle of the page. This is most annoying while editing because it floats exactly on top of the preview/save buttons.

  • Try use firefox,IE6 tends to do that.
  • Using Firefox is not a solution! Any idea when this will be fixed, it's a real pain.
  • what about change some code:
<div class="visualClear"></div>
<div class="visualClear" style="width:100%; font-size:1px;">&nbsp;</div>

to be sure that the div take all the screen's width, and IE seems to not display empty elements.

  • Any new info on this bug? Yes, Firefox is a solution, but that's not really a solution is it, but a plug for Firefox? I have both, but some people don't want to use FireFox. Does that mean they are denied to the parts of the site that the banner is blocking? Ironic enough, the IE/site/banner bug blocks most of this section. Gares Redstorm
There's a missing </div>. Looks like it belongs before the "<div class="portlet" id="p-tb">". One of the two divs for the sponsors section isn't closed before the next section (which is opened by the quoted div). • This is true. We used to have that problem and it was fixed by an upgrade or something During the same fix that fixed the misfloating logo bar. I am thinking Gravewit or Nunix reverted some patch to the server while working on the perf and that's why we're seeing these old problems pop up. If only we'd have more updates. Zzzzz. Anyways. Or as you do, just "tab" furiously till you get to the box you want. :)
  • I think this is related to the floating rights bar problem. If the text box appears in the area above the bar, then I need to hit tab to be able to edit in it. If the text box appears below the floating rights bar, then I can click in it to edit the contents. --Barek 10:32, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
  • If you click the very top line in the box so the curser is halfway inside the bow, it can edit it. — Skuld 01:56, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
  • This seems to be fixed since we moved to the new server.... Kidburla 22:50, 13 February 2006 (CST)
Can anyone confirm if this is fixed or not? Gravewit 07:22, 20 February 2006 (CST)
Yes, it's fixed for me on IE6. --Barek 09:32, 20 February 2006 (CST)

Search Problems (again...)[edit source]

Page: Any.

Problem: When you type into the search box and press ENTER, it doesn't work.

Comments: This is since itself went down. The search box tries to redirect you to, but can't and so you get an error. The search needs to be fixed to point to again.

Error Message: Service Temporarily Unavailable[edit source]

Page: All Pages

Problem: Error Message: Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. Apache/2.0.55 (FreeBSD) PHP/5.0.5 Server at Port 80

Comments: I often get this error since the last downtime of the server a couple of days ago. First I though it would probably be a cache issue, but the errors still keep coming. There seems to be no pattern at all behind when or what page is affected. When the error shos up I have to hit "reload" a couple of times to make the page load correctly. The error also shows on pages that have already loaded correctly shortly ago.

Submitted By: --Eightyfour-onesevenfive 04:11, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Add-on Comments: I find the errors correlating to multiple queries to the server within a short span of time. If I just click links or hit open pages once every 60 seconds (on the safe extreme), this bug wouldn't come up. But when I'm running a crusade (opening many pages successively, quickly editing them all, and saving them successively), this becomes a major hassle. But this might be a necessary evil to fight "slowness"? Not sure. -PanSola 07:39, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Pref Issue[edit source]

Page: All Pages

Since all the pages loads increased I noticed that everytime I click a link its trying to load then the page. Not sure if it's related to the slowness but I never noticed it before. I also tried to visit and the page never loaded for me.

We've been using google analytics for 3 or 4 months. Nothing to do with slowness. Gravewit 15:38, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Search returns blank page[edit source]

Problem: Every now and then (not always, about 1 out of 3 times) the search function returns a blank page for me. This happens regardless if I use "Go" or "Search". Even repeated F5 refreshing will keep the result page blank.

I've seen this bug both on my PC at home and at work in the office, using different client hardware, OS and connection, so I assume the bug is server side. Both my PC's at work and at home use IE.

New findings: As somebody pointed out somewhere else, this has to do with the buttons. If you hit [ENTER] (on your keyboard), you will end up on the blank page, consistently, every single time. But if you use one of the buttons ([Go] or [Search]), everything works fine. --Tetris L 05:29, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Comments: This hasn't happened before we moved server and/or before we switched to Google site search. Not sure if either of the two things has to do with the problem.

  • This hasn't worked yet for me — Skuld 08:22, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
  • This has not worked in over a week, the site is basically unsearchable and using cached Google pages is useless in finding new pages. --Karlos 17:50, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Just a note, but I have had no issues with this at all using FireFox. (Note: I'm not trying to get anyone to change, just noting this for the people who might be looking to fix the problem that they might want to look at how IE handles this differently from FF.) --Rainith 11:03, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Indentation of Stub templates[edit source]

Page: Stance Beast Mastery and many others.

Problem: Ever since User:Skuld introduced the indentation at the beginning line of the templates (which is a good idea) this indentation is presently indenting the first line of most articles that have stub tages at the beginning. I have tried to remove it and failed.

Comments: This is not a technical isse with MediaWiki, and is probably something Fyren or someone more versed than I can look into.

Resolved: Fixed it, added <hr style="visibility: hidden;" /> to the bottom of it, the hidden line blocks out the indentation for the next line, that needs to be added for the other stubs though Skuld 06:55, 19 October 2005 (EST)

"GuildWiki has a problem"[edit source]

Page: Random pages

Problem: When I click on a wiki-link I get returned to the main page. ( the URL displayed in the address bar is of the page I wanted to visit.)

When this happens the main page has text that is larger than normal. At the very top it says "GuildWiki has a problem". This is partially obscured by the "article" and "discussion" tabs ( they are drawn over the lower portion of the text "GuildWiki has a problem") there is also 2 copies of the Guild Wiki Logo displayed, they over lap with one to the left and up a small amount compared to the other.

If i click on refresh the problem normally clears and the desired page is displayed.

It's been around since the upgrade to MediaWiki 1.7.1, but it's gotten more common it seems. My assumption is that it couldn't write to the database due to too many doing this at once. About edits though, it should be safe to re-submit if this happens. It should tell you that someone has edited the page since you started, and show you what edits he/she has done. Then it's just a matter of comparing your own edit, and the "new" edit. — Galil Ranger 10:49, 3 August 2006 (CDT)
The GuildWiki's traffic currently exceeds the capabilities of our hardware. We are looking into caching technology, as well as the purchase of another server, to help solve this problem. There is currently no ETA on a fix. The problem is most prevalent during peak times—roughly noon to evening, American time—so if you can visit during other times of the day, the problem shouldn't impact you as much. —Tanaric 19:05, 19 August 2006 (CDT)
Sounds good, cause this is getting unbearable. It seems to me the biggest issue isn't the php parsing though. It's the MySQL server being too busy. You often get "Database error" when trying to edit something, and visiting the blog shortly after tends to give you "Too many connections", where connections is referring to database connections. So I think it won't be as bad if you increase the maximum amount of concurrent connections to the database in my.conf. — Galil Ranger 14:55, 29 August 2006 (CDT)
Edit: Also, according to the blog, the mysql server is currently running only one thread. The optimal amount for busy servers is <number of CPU cores> * 2. — Galil Ranger 15:03, 29 August 2006 (CDT)

Spam-prevention is wonky[edit source]

Argh, what a pain in the hinie. The spam-prevention thingy that stops edits from going through also clears the Summary, so I had a nice round of he-said-she-said with the system because I'd fill out the summary, submit, get the spam-protection challenge instead, fill that out, submit, get the "you forgot the summary"-reminder, fill out the summary again, get a new spam-protection challenge... etc, etc. ad nauseum. --Bishop (rap|con) 12:19, 6 May 2006 (CDT)

Also note that the spam blocker is triggered by previews, and that it resets not only the summary but also the "This is a minor edit" checkbox. It has happened to me soooooo many times that I finished writing an article, hit preview, check it again quickly and find no errors, then hit submit and get the anti-spam message, which means that I have to re-type my summary to re-check the minor edit tickbox. Comments: I'm not sure whether this is a bug, but if the page is not showing up if you type the first name of a mob, it totally defeats the purpose of having a search function...

Submitted By: ~ Nilles (chat) 09:59, 25 June 2006 (CDT)

As I see it you'll only get an Article Title Match if you've typed in the whole article's name correctly. If you search for say "Pei's Blades" which is contained in the article, it'll get a Page Text Match. Unfortunately the term "Pei the Skull Blade" isn't contained in Pei the Skull Blade, it's just the articles' title. Also notice that it's "Pei's Blades" and so searching for Pei is no good either, although searching for "Pei's" will generate a Page Text Match. --Xasxas256 10:12, 25 June 2006 (CDT)
I added the text "Pei the Skull Blade" within the article Pei the Skull Blade, still no good on the search; although there may be an indexing routine that needs to run at a scheduled time before it will work.
Oddly, searching for "skull blade" or "pei skull blade" does result in a valid search result. But searching for "pei blade" it's not on the first page of results, but is the 36th match in the Article title matches. This suggests to me that the word "Pei" is not being treated as a searchable term, but is instead ignored much like common words like "have" and "from", which are not indexed. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 11:54, 25 June 2006 (CDT)
Perhaps words of length three or less aren't indexed. -- 12:05, 25 June 2006 (CDT)
Maybe. But as for the wiki, I think it should index all words from page titles except for dictionary words (like "the", "on", "to", "and"). ~ Nilles (chat) 06:12, 26 June 2006 (CDT)
By default MySQL does not fulltext index words under 4 characters in length. See the mysql manual:
Some words are ignored in full-text searches:
  • Any word that is too short is ignored. The default minimum length of words that are found by full-text searches is four characters.
  • Words in the stopword list are ignored. A stopword is a word such as “the” or “some” that is so common that it is considered to have zero semantic value. There is a built-in stopword list, but it can be overwritten by a user-defined list.

Minor bugs[edit source]

Quote from section above: [...] template:R not displaying on pages where it's included even though the icon shows when you view the template itself; Link on left toolbar to "Report a Bug" is missing [...] --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:19, 17 July 2006 (CDT)

Galil Ranger 16:23, 17 July 2006 (CDT)

More on Template R, if you include that template like this R it won't show, it also will not appear in the list of used templates when the page is edited or previewed. However if you do r it includes the template correctly and the icon will show up. --Draygo Korvan (Yap) 14:47, 18 July 2006 (CDT)
I noticed that too. Maybe deleting that template and recreating it might work. --Ab.Er.Rant @ User:Aberrant80 (msg) 05:27, 19 July 2006 (CDT)
Scope out Template talk:R, it appears to be a "feature" of the new MediaWiki if I'm reading PanSola's post correctly, so recreating it will make no difference and Skuld seems to agree. --Xasxas256 05:36, 19 July 2006 (CDT)
From my understanding of multiple threads on the issue: It appears that R is a reserved template character in v1.7.1, which would explain why it worked before the upgrade and not now. You can get around this by either using lowercase r or adding a pipe after the uppercase R , the simplest being to use lowercase r. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 14:31, 19 July 2006 (CDT)
Since this seems to be a "bug" that's here to stay, I changed the ProfessionsNavBox template so all ProfessionIcon Template calls are lowercase. This obviously fixes the ranger icon not showing up, and in my opinion adds consistency. I don't particularly like the idea of one style being used for a single profession, and another being used for every other one. By changing the norm used from here on out and patching the old pages, both consistency and functionality can be maintained. However - this would amount to no small amount of edits, and before I bother to go any further with them I figure I'll see if anybody has any objections to changes on this scale. --Kwisatz 23:48, 20 July 2006 (CDT)
Ptemplate is buggy, it become a Plat, instaed of Paragon--heach 03:58, 28 July 2006 (CDT)
Technically, that's not a bug - it's a design issue. The P template has been in use since November of last year as a symbol for platinum. Within the last week or two there has been discussion, and within the last couple of days the platinum symbol was moved to Plat instead of P. The P sysmbol will catch up, it's just taking time. Items in use for months take time to modify everyplace they're used. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 08:12, 28 July 2006 (CDT)

But, when logged out from my account, going to Mo/any_Spirit_Bonder produces the error that you described. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 11:25, 26 August 2006 (CDT)
I've uploaded a screen capture of the results after going to the referenced article when not logged-in. Note the odd over-lapping of two articles. There also seems to be some information relating to a game update in there! Using the webdeveloper extension for Firefox and linearizing the page you can see the following text:
  1. Fixed a bug that caused henchmen and certain NPCs to run incorrectly into the midst of combat.
  2. Fixed a bug that caused Obsidian Keys and Phantom Keys to stop dropping in the Fissure of Woe and the Underworld.
  3. Fixed a bug that allowed players to earn Gladiator Title points in Zaishen arenas.

If you care enough, post suggesting they clear their browser caches again or hold control as they refresh. Things were only mixed up for a few minutes (over an hour ago now), but anyone viewing a page during that timeframe might have seen a page with the same name from the other wiki. Refreshing/clearing my cache worked fine for me in IE6, FF2, and Opera 9. If they cleared/refreshed while the problem was still around it wouldn't have helped. --Fyren 01:25, 16 November 2006 (CST)

Works fine for me. The mail will say it's from zero at zerolives dot org since that's what Gravewit set it up to be. --Fyren 17:44, 16 November 2006 (CST)
Slightly off topic - do you have access to change that? would seem more appropriate; maybe or or something along those lines. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 17:47, 16 November 2006 (CST)
Depends. I can put whatever I want in the from field, but replies won't work to a address till Gravewit sets up an MX record, since I can't do that (and we set up postfix or whatever). --Fyren 18:25, 16 November 2006 (CST)
Actually, as replies are only readable by Gravewit anyways, given his activity level with the wiki, I wouldn't have a major problem with it not being a real email address. If it were changed, any way to insert text saying something like "do not reply to sender, this is not a monitored email account" or something of that sort? (okay, this is starting to look like something that belongs on a talk page instead of the bug report page). --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 18:31, 16 November 2006 (CST)
It'll say it's from now, but attempting to reply will result in the mail bouncing with a complaint about there being no MX record. An admin can edit MediaWiki:Enotif body to change the text that's mailed out. --Fyren 19:01, 16 November 2006 (CST)
I've modified the notice at MediaWiki:Enotif body. My only concern (that I honestly should have thought of first) is if emails sent to an invalid address at may cause a noticeable performance issue then we should revert these changes (especially if someone out there has a compromised system and receives this notice, the address could get harvested and added to spam lists). Let me know if you feel there is a risk here. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 20:02, 16 November 2006 (CST)
No, nothing will even touch our servers right now. Someone's mail server somewhere will try to look up the MX record for our domain, find it doesn't exist after asking our host's DNS server, then bounce the reply back to the sender with an error message. I don't see your point about spam. That's like saying we should never use a valid e-mail address for anything. --Fyren 20:18, 16 November 2006 (CST)
If nothing hits the server, then the spam concern becomes irrelevant. The comment was assuming that emails would reach the server before being bounced; then the zerolives address would likely be hitting an entirely different machine's mail server - so safer to the wiki server. As it is, I see your point, and I think the current config will be less confusing overall (unless someone objects). --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 21:23, 16 November 2006 (CST)

Well that's interesting, I'm still not getting any mails, and nothing is showing on my reject report. Which is where it would show if my MX was blocking it. I was receiving e-mails fine until the new server was put in place. Did anything change on that end when the new server was setup? ErkDog 07:51, 20 November 2006 (CST)

Mail logs show a user unknown for you from the MX for the address in your preferences (I'm assuming you didn't change it recently). I just tried sending you mail from GMail to see if you get it or if it bounces. --Fyren 08:27, 20 November 2006 (CST)
I got your mail, and replied, all my other e-mail is working perfectly. :-/ ErkDog 08:38, 20 November 2006 (CST)
I hate sendmail and I'm sleepy, so I'm probably going to sleep. I might poke it a little more first, but I'll look into it again when I wake up if not. --Fyren 09:18, 20 November 2006 (CST)

I can't imagine what would be causing unknown user. What is the IP and Host of the machine sending e-mail? I will scan my logs for that to see if it's being rejected by some other method. The error logs list the sender's address though, and currently I have no rejected e-mails today from Peculiar considering that 1) I know some should have been sent and 2) I didn't get them :(. You didn't clarify if anything had changed as far as the host, or configuration of outgoing e-mails when the new server was put in place. Naturally, I have also searched my Junk and Discard folders for mail from, to no avail. Thanks, ErkDog 11:33, 20 November 2006 (CST)

Because I didn't know since I didn't set up the mailers on either machine. The log is saying your MX has been saying "user unknown" but using sendmail myself shows our machine's hostname is screwed up. I'm going to set up postfix later today and try to get Gravewit to set up proper reverse DNS. --Fyren 21:26, 20 November 2006 (CST)

From what I understand about my MX, if the hostname that the machine claims to be does not resolve to it's IP it will bounce it. But the IP does not have to reverse to the claimed hostname. If you have control over it though, it is obviously best to make it correct forward and backward. Can you please tell me with which MX your MXes are communicating with? Perhaps it is a DNS issue on my end, although I have not changed anything. And it seems coincidental that the issue popped up right when the new server was put online. Tuffmail does employ quite a bit of 'reasonable' filtering to get rid of spam, so if an MX appears "broken" it will reject it. However, that reject -should- show in my reject log. Can you confirm that it is attempting to send to erkdog -)at)- and that it is sending it to MX: A dig MX should reveal as the MX. Thanks ErkDog 21:49, 20 November 2006 (CST)

The host sendmail is reporting doesn't resolve (which is why I said our hostname was screwed up). That's the address and MX it's using. I don't personally have control over the DNS, I have to get Gravewit to do it since we're not handling our own DNS. I'm going to ditch sendmail and use postfix on the machine with the IP resolves to. --Fyren 22:29, 20 November 2006 (CST)
See if you're getting new mails now. Dunno if you're watching this page. --Fyren 23:38, 20 November 2006 (CST)

I did not receive any over night and a few of my watched pages were updated. Thanks, ErkDog 08:05, 21 November 2006 (CST)

According to the DB, your current address isn't authenticated. If you switched addresses in your preferences to test things out, it won't send mail to it (even if you switch it back to a previously authenticated one) until you go to the link in the confirmation mail. I don't see it having tried to mail you since I switched it over to postfix. Try going to your preferences and telling it to send a confirmation e-mail. --Fyren 08:53, 21 November 2006 (CST)

I had done that several times. Finally got one. Looks like a DNS propagation issue on my end could have been a catalyst to the issue. Thanks a lot for your help. ErkDog 16:53, 21 November 2006 (CST)

I may have spoke prematurely. I am still not getting e-mails despite my receipt of the confirmation e-mail. Several of my watched pages were changed overnight and no notifications were sent :-/ ErkDog 07:59, 22 November 2006 (CST)
When you change your address it resets your e-mail notification preferences (default being no e-mail notifications). Did you turn them back on? --Fyren 08:09, 22 November 2006 (CST)
  • rolls eyes* well that explains that. Guess I will let you know if I have any more problems, which I suspect I will not at this point. Thanks for your help. ErkDog 12:32, 22 November 2006 (CST)

This was caused by a change in the MediaWiki software many months ago to make the "R" a reserved character. You can get around it by using a lowercase r Ranger. Someone posted once that it's possible to disable the uppercase R being reserved, but with the lowercase version working, it just hasn't been high enough of a priority (yet) to look into changing it. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:53, 16 November 2006 (CST)

builds[edit source]

all the builds have "build:" infront of them and its trhowing off the naming system. its getting annoying. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sacraficia (contribs) .

Hey Sacraficia, I'm not 100% sure what you are complaining about. All builds are now going to have "Build:" preceding them. With the builds section growing larger and the aim of build articles differing substantially from most other articles on the wiki, it was decided that we should keep builds in a separate namespace. Any previously produced builds will have redirects, so I'm not 100% sure of the problem.
Could you be more specific please? <LordBiro>/<Talk> 07:10, 17 November 2006 (CST)
All builds are in the build namespace unless new ones were made during the span my bot moved everything. Links haven't changed and I left the redirects from the moves. --Fyren 08:05, 17 November 2006 (CST)
I think he's referring to the build listings in categories. Previously, they were alphabetically grouped so all Assassin builds were under "A", all Dervish skills under "D", etc. They are still alphabetical, but most are now showing under the "B" group, with some here and there that have their category tags modified to still sort under various groups.
Personally, as they're all alphabetical anyway, I see no problem with leaving them under "B" as that makes them simpler to rename later (won't need to worry about the category name as well) (EDIT: rethought this, as the groupings do help on the pages that have an alpha TOC at the top of the pages, no now prefer fixing back into groupings within categories). But, we currently have a mix (see Category:Unfavored builds or Category:Untested builds as examples), and I think we should standardise one way or the other. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 13:26, 17 November 2006 (CST)
See Fyren's post in GuildWiki talk:Community Portal, it has to do with the templates that categorize the builds. --Rainith 14:13, 17 November 2006 (CST)
I did a post over there. Anything with a template (such as Template:Untested-build) should be easy to fix - I did a small edit to the template, and now new null edits to those articles seem to fix their listing (may be cache related - not updating the template change automatically). --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 14:24, 17 November 2006 (CST)
I replied over there, too, but it should be updated right now. Let me know if any of them aren't. --Fyren 21:11, 17 November 2006 (CST)

Page Access Counters[edit source]

The page access counters on all pages are not working. Either they are not counting or they are not refreshing for me. When I try to refresh a page to see how many readers have read it since the last time I checked, I see the same number even hours later. Previously, just refreshing the page itself would increase the counter. --Karlos 12:51, 17 November 2006 (CST)

Currently, a refresh does not update the count, but clearing my cache does update it. I never paid too much attention - so not sure if this is any different for me. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 13:19, 17 November 2006 (CST)
The counters will be pretty useless with our current setup since squid hits won't get counted. Just refreshing increments them as expected for me (since I'm logged in and not getting a cached page from squid). I guess I could disable them since they're going to be wrong. --Fyren 21:09, 17 November 2006 (CST)
I would concur that since squid is involved and that since it's rather frivolous information to begin with, that it be disabled. ErkDog 12:36, 22 November 2006 (CST)
How does Wikipedia deal with page counts? I know that they don't display page counts on each article, but when they are compiling statistics do they just go by the number of pages served by the MediaWiki software and ignore the fact that a cached page might be served 1000 times by Squid? Or does Squid somehow update MediaWiki? I don't see how it would, but I'm curious :) <LordBiro>/<Talk> 13:20, 22 November 2006 (CST)

Slow Again?[edit source]

Ok, as of an hour ago, edits are significantly slower than they were a few hours before. I am assuming as the wiki works better many users are returning to use the wiki heavily and the load is rising again. Can we monitor this? --Karlos 14:04, 17 November 2006 (CST)

Redirects appear to not be working, with regards to making new ones. Image:Hai-head.jpg is wanted to redirect to User:Hai_Jil/Hai_Jil, in the same manner that the profession icons redirect to the correct profession page. if the code is incorrect, could someone correct the code on that page, if not, can someone investigate it?

The redirect seems to work for me. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:40, 17 November 2006 (CST)
When you make the initial edit, it won't redirect (it appends &redirect=no to the URL, and so just hitting refresh doesn't help). If you can come up with something reproducible or if other people report it, I'll look into it, but nothing appears wrong right now. --Fyren 21:07, 17 November 2006 (CST)

Forbidden to view Eshau Longspear page[edit source]

When trying to access the page for Eshau Longspear, I get the following:

You don't have permission to access /wiki/Eshau_Longspear_(Paragon) on this server.

Been fiddling with squid's ACLs trying to check into this (some people may have noticed images suddenly not appear on pages for a few moments, heh). Everything seems to be okay. Just after this report was made I was able to view that page while logged in or not. If anyone gets a 403 for something, please post here with the URL, their browser, the time they got the 403/forbidden (and if it says "squid" or "apache" on the error), and if refreshing the page helps. --Fyren 04:52, 18 November 2006 (CST)

Progression Table function error[edit source]

While updating the skills, I found an error with the progression formula. Take a look at Template:Chilling Winds.

At 12 Air Magic, the 2nd effect (Longer Duration of the water hex) should be 85%, not 84%. Can someone who created this template (the progression table one) fix this? --CoRrRan 13:09, 21 November 2006 (CST)

The value at 0 was wrong. Garbage in, garbage out. It was set to 20% where it's actually 25% at 0 air. --Fyren 18:22, 21 November 2006 (CST)
Whoops, my bad. Going to double check that more often from now on. --CoRrRan 18:50, 21 November 2006 (CST)

How can i fix this? The pic is small and has been tried in .png, .jpeg, and .bmp formats. -- El Delcroy 23:16, 21 November 2006 (CST)

Looks to me like you aren't specifying a format in the name of the file. You need to put the extension in the file name when you try to upload the file. i.e. --Rainith 23:49, 21 November 2006 (CST)
I just uploaded a png file for testing then, worked fine. --Xasxas256 23:51, 21 November 2006 (CST)
I just tested my theory. I got the same message when I tried to upload . You need to specify the extension of the file in the file name that you are uploading it to. --Rainith 23:54, 21 November 2006 (CST)
Uploaded files have to match a list of allowed extensions and actually be a file of that type (checked through PHP's fileinfo). --Fyren 01:43, 22 November 2006 (CST)

Wanted Articles.[edit source]

Wanted Articles: Special:Wantedpages

Problem: Item 1 should not exist here.

Comments: This appears to be a bug of sorts in that the "page" that the wiki is reporting as wanted is actually an external link?

Submitted By: ErkDog 16:38, 22 November 2006 (CST)

Happened w/the server change. From what I've seen, all articles w/wikipedia links need to have null edits done on them to fix them. --Rainith 16:51, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Looking a little closer at that one (Yay for being rushed and at work), this one may be a different issue from the one I've been running into, I'm not sure and don't have time at the moment to really look into it. --Rainith 17:07, 22 November 2006 (CST)
Are you saying that all articles which -contain- the wiki links need to be null edited? Or in other words the 38 with the stub wiki link? ErkDog 17:26, 22 November 2006 (CST)
All I know is that I've run across 3 articles that had red wikipedia links in them (that weren't red before the server change). After editing something else on the page, the wikipedia link returned to normal. Going from that I am guessing that it is the same situation here. --Rainith 17:34, 22 November 2006 (CST)

Unfortunately, what links here, doesn't show the offending pages :( I guess in time they will get scrubbed off, or is there a Stub category where these could be cleaned enmasse? ErkDog 17:38, 22 November 2006 (CST)

I'm rebuilding the links tables but it'll take a while, probably. I think I caused this when I redid the interwiki links; anything with an interwiki link that got parsed during that time was considered a broken internal link. --Fyren 21:47, 22 November 2006 (CST)

Verification / Summary Loop[edit source]

Page: Any Edit Page

Problem: Loop when trying to save page, caused by math problem / edit summary.

Submitted By: ErkDog 13:31, 27 November 2006 (CST)

I recall this being reported before but I cannot find the relevant report in the cluster **** of information on this page which is outdated, irrelevant, or inappropriately titled. Moving along.

I was editing a page and it required me to enter a math answer for verification. It then kicked back saying I didn't provide an edit summary. I clicked save again, it threw math problem back at me. So forth and so on, until I finally just typed an x in the edit summary.

Please advise.

Thanks, ErkDog 13:31, 27 November 2006 (CST)

Skills with 4 progression rows[edit source]

Page: Template:Anguished Was Lingwah

Problem: There probably aren't many of those, but Template:Anguished Was Lingwah needs 4 rows for progressions. It appears that the Template:Progression-template only makes 3 progression rows. Correct? (And if this is the wrong page, please tell me on what page I can put these kind of thing questions/remarks/reports on.)

Just noticed that for Template:Attuned Was Songkai there is a table with 5 progression rows in the code, but only 4 show. (Not really sure if there shouldn't be a separate table for that information in Attuned Was Songkai, instead of in the Template though.)

Reported by: CoRrRan 17:45, 28 November 2006 (CST)

I've edited the skill templates, and I think it's now correct, but I feel stupid for doing it because changing a template that is as well used as the skill template will probably affect performance and I should have checked this with Fyren first. <LordBiro>/<Talk> 18:11, 28 November 2006 (CST)
It didn't work, I'm afraid... damn, that code looks complex. Whoops, it works now, but there can't be 2 identical progression categories. --CoRrRan 18:27, 28 November 2006 (CST)
The progression tables should contain only the ranges in the skill. You can add extra tables in the notes with derived/calculated numbers (with the old progression templates) if you want. --Fyren 18:35, 28 November 2006 (CST)
Yeah, I've just removed the extra rows from Template:Attuned Was Songkai because they tested out wrong. Someone will have to make an extra table in Attuned Was Songkai if they really want it. --CoRrRan 18:41, 28 November 2006 (CST)
For things like Songkai, the auto-progression won't work correctly since you (or whoever) gave it rounded numbers and then the template gets it wrong when it rounds again. While I could fix it, I don't think it really matters. --Fyren 19:06, 28 November 2006 (CST)

User: is referring to Monk elite skill locations. It is correct that that list isn't in alpabetic order, as the Nightfall skills were added at the bottom of each attribute section instead of alphabetic order. I'm going to fix that now. Ranger Green Weapons Pages doesn't show correct pages[edit source]

All the pages in Index_of_unique_item_lists for Ranger's Green Weapons display infos on "Bows" and not Green Weapons Infos.

:Category:Build stubs[edit source]

In :Category:Build stubs there's an entry for Sahlahja Solo Rit, which is a deleted article. Another oddity on it is that the same article shows in this list, which is in the Main namespace, all articles with the prefix "Build".
Also ... off-topic: would this article be a good candidate for the __NEWSECTIONLINK__ tag? --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 17:23, 24 January 2007 (CST)

Strange display problem in the quest list of nightfall[edit source]

MTA Name[edit source]

X-Spam-Report: Content analysis details:

Received: by (sSMTP sendmail emulation); Wed, 22 Nov 2006 13:20:07 -0600

The MTA should be reporting itself as the host that it's on not an entire domain. That would be the reason for the additional spam scoring. If you have individual MTA's they would all have the "name" of the machine they are on as opposed to "".

Please advise.

Thanks, ErkDog 13:46, 22 November 2006 (CST)

If that rule triggers when the hostname doesn't resolve to the IP, then it won't matter since the machine's FQDN won't resolve anyway. --Fyren 22:13, 22 November 2006 (CST)
  • sigh* What triggers that rule is when the HELO does not match the IP. In other words, does not resolve to it is -forged- and fraudulent. The HELO or name of the MTA should be something that resolves to the actual IP that the MTA lives on. It can be as long as resolves to the IP of the host the MTA is on. The reverse does not have to match. But the forward does. ErkDog 22:40, 22 November 2006 (CST)
I don't think you understood what I said here and before. I don't control our DNS. There is nothing that resolves to that IP and I can't change that. Hence, "if the rules triggers when the hostname doesn't resolve to the IP, then it won't matter." --Fyren 22:50, 22 November 2006 (CST)
No I saw it, but someone has control over the DNS. So the simple answer is to 1) Change the DNS such that a host resolves to that IP. 2) Change the name of the configured MTA to match that DNS A Record. ErkDog 00:38, 23 November 2006 (CST)

So, I looked at the header of the last e-mail sent to me. The MTA is still reporting itself as "" Is the MTA's name not going to be changed to reflect the actual hostname of the machine? Is there a legitimate rationale for not doing this? Please advise. ErkDog 13:35, 27 November 2006 (CST)

I told Gravewit to set up proper DNS/reverse DNS and hostnames before you ever said anything about mail. I told you I can't do it. --Fyren 18:05, 27 November 2006 (CST)
I see, I must have misunderstood that you had already requested him to do that. The hostname / DNS is more important than the reverse part, and can be done easily. I don't understand why he would not have done it already. ErkDog 18:16, 27 November 2006 (CST)

Logging in as other users[edit source]

This has happened twice to me now, both within just the past few days. I visit GuildWiki and I'm signed in as another user. Both times were random people I've never met. I have it set to auto sign me in. The first link I click resolves the issue, properly showing MY account again. But - that first link takes me to that page as that user. Meaning if I click "My Contributions," it takes me to their contributions. But once at their contributions, I'm myself again, meaning if I then click "My Talk" it takes me to my talk. I'm not enough of a WikiGuru to find some way to exploit this, but I'm certain someone is. --Macros† (talk/contribs) 19:24, 2 December 2006 (CST)

It's a caching issue, you're not logged in as someone else. Still looking into it. There's a little discussion on the talk page. --Fyren 22:28, 2 December 2006 (CST)
Just for the record there isn't any way to exploit this. You cannot carry out any actions as the user that you appear to be logged in as. I don't think you can gain access to any of their data either. <LordBiro>/<Talk> 06:17, 3 December 2006 (CST)

Exact same browser, exact same user. And I hope I'm wrong but I do believe you can carry out actions as that user, but not on purpose. For example, you can't just notice you're logged on as another user and think "Wow, now I'm going to ruin for this person!", since as soon as you click something you're yourself again. But I do believe it is possible to get edits through as someone else if you're unlucky. After all, it's a php script receiving the edit when you click "Save page", and the same as any other php script, that is most likely affected by the same bug since afaik MediaWiki uses the same variable globally through all their scripts. It's gotta be a very rare case though. — Galil Ranger 18:43, 29 December 2006 (CST)
You are not logged in as that user. You're getting someone else's cached page. Session data is not in the page. --Fyren 18:54, 29 December 2006 (CST)
That I know, I just thought page contents was the only thing that got cached, not the "user-bar" at the top (atleast not server-wise), and that user-bar, did also change. But it's been a while since I looked around in MediaWiki (or php at all for that matter), so it's entirely possible I am wrong. — Galil Ranger 19:38, 29 December 2006 (CST)

GameWikis skin display problem[edit source]

Description: GameWikis skin not showing the support links from the toolbox on the left of each page.

Page: All when using GameWikis skin.

Problem: Under IE6 (will test others later from home), with the monobook skin, on the left it shows five links under "navigation" and three links under "support". When I switch to the "new" default GameWikis skin, all I see are the initial five links under navigation. The three links under support are not shown.

Submitted By: --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 17:07, 12 December 2006 (CST)

At the moment, just the default. I have to manually poke the database to change user preferences, so I'm going to do that later. I'm lazy. --Fyren 18:02, 12 December 2006 (CST)

Firefox Display Issues[edit source]

-- 16:29, 15 December 2006 (CST) Guildwiki has always worked perfectly in Firefox for me, and yet today when I got on the site suddenly the frames were broken, meaning the coloured blocks with links such as "builds" run into the navigation/search frame on the left, which overlap. Also, when I went to a page other than the main page, the skin disappeared completely and I was left with a text/link only page with no images. Did someone change the source code and make it firefox incompatable by accident?

"Frames?" What page? --Fyren 16:45, 15 December 2006 (CST)
Something to do with the GameWikis skin deletion maybe? That was the cause of the issue in this thread. --Rainith 16:57, 15 December 2006 (CST)
Yes it is looking completely borked in Firefox for me also. Like it's been reverted back to a skin from 1990 or something. Looks normal in IE though.

I'm guessing that fixed it because your GuildWiki cookies got deleted, so it had to load up your preferences again. Display bug in Charmamani[edit source]

The map location picture partially "blocks" the view of the table

Doesn't seem to be happening to me. — Jyro X Darkgrin.jpg 12:07, 29 January 2007 (CST)
I'm guessing it might have to do with the resolution that your monitor is set at. What resolution are you running at? --Rainith 15:27, 29 January 2007 (CST)
Sorry, I edited the impacted article earlier this morning to fix this, but had to leave quickly and forgot to respond here. This morning I shrunk the map image on that page based on the bug report. At its original size, at smaller resolutions, the map would overlap part of the table. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:01, 29 January 2007 (CST)

Another picture bug[edit source]

I uploaded a picture for The Darksong today and it seemed fine but when you click to zoom it(kind of neccecery for spears) it shows a weird blown up looking verision of the old one, i tried to reupload it but it was the same...:(--Blade Smallscout.png (talk|contribs) 16:13, 30 January 2007 (CST)

Your local system has cached the image. Hold "CTRL" while clicking the refresh button on your browser - that should force your system to not use the cached version, but to use a fresh download from the site instead. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:15, 30 January 2007 (CST)

Can't Stay Logged In[edit source]

Each time I log in, I can remain so for about 2-3 pages before the status disappears, and I'm asked to log in again any time I try to edit a page or upload an image. I have cleared my browser cache and made sure cookies are enabled, but for some reason it just won't keep me logged in. The status seems to appear and disappear randomly, as occasionally I will be shown as logged in again after several minutes of browsing. Can anyone offer advice? 13:38, 11 February 2007 (CST)

It asks you to log in when you edit a page? I haven't been editing much today, but I haven't noticed anything. Anyone else? --Fyren 13:50, 11 February 2007 (CST)
No problems here. Try a different browser for a day and see if you still have the problem. If not, try re-downloading your browser or resetting all settings? –Ichigo724Ichigo-signature.jpg 08:07, 12 February 2007 (CST)
I've seen this problem on some computers with some browsers. Changing the browser has always helped so it must be the browser settings. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 08:17, 12 February 2007 (CST)
This happens to me sometimes, but almost always it is because I spent too long editing a page and it auto-logged out from inactivity. "Lost data over session" or somesuch. Or am I thinking of something else. Sometimes though, I open a page and it logs me out for no reason...can't remember the last time it happened though. Entropy 18:18, 13 February 2007 (CST)

Help! I can't change skins![edit source]

Well, I went to the Skins tab under Preferences and changed it to "Chick"; but, after saving, everything is $#%@ed up. Well...the problem is, I have IE6 or somesuch, not FireFox (Win98 ><). But I can try and find the cookies anyways. Corsaire: yah, the links are "there" onscreen but they're not really "there" if you know what I mean. They are just text. I hover the mouse over them, "Skins" is not a link at all, and the "Files" one is very small (like 1 pixel wide), hard to click on. I tried manually imputting the address, Special:Preferences#prefsection-1, but that bugged and didn't do anything...A whole bunch of other things broke as well. For example the Save page button, now I can only click on the rightmost 1/4 of it to save; the Minor Edit box is covered with the "Get Firefox" Google ad; on most pages every bit of text is gone and just the colored links remain; etc etc. Dun wanna put more screens up because they're big files, but it's just craziness. :'( Let's hope that cookies thing works. 09:06, 16 February 2007 (CST)

MySQL error 1114[edit source]

Earlier today, I was getting the following error whenever they attempt to make edits on GuildWiki.

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

I'm not experiencing it anymore, but it's not listed in GuildWiki:Software and technical issues/Resolved bugs yet, so other people may still be experiencing it. It's currently being discussed on this guildwarsguru thread. -- Gordon Ecker 22:43, 17 April 2007 (EDT)

A Suggestion for a better user interface[edit source]

Hey guys,

I can't say I love GuildWiki enough -- It really is one of the best websites that is game related which I have come across in my many years of computer gaming.

I am writing to describe a "feature" rather than a bug, but I couln't find the best suggestion box, so I used this area of the website.

I have a simple suggestion which I believe would make your site even more valuable than it is today. This idea just dawned upon me tonight and I don't have time nor the energy to focus efforts on your site, but you might want to take the suggestion -- or you might want to throw it out the window like an old banna peel that turned black due to complete disneglect.

You have maps which show all of the different areas in GW -- and I have not found much better anywhere on the planet. But -- as I was researching today how to do what I would like to do within the GW world, I found that your maps are somewhat limited in that they show particular areas but they don't show where the portals lead to.

I believe it would be a KILLER addition to your site to have someone go through your images of the world and add the linked portions of the world as a name to each portal on the image you currently have stored for each area of the world.

I would be happy to contribute to this effort if your website would like to extend the effort to add to your information in this respect.

If not -- because your website literally runs itself and your community is overwhelming, then that is ok too, but I wanted to write in as a gaming and game programming vet of 25 years to let you know that your site is "the bomb" and I cannot believe how much intuition and influence you people have over so many people. You really should should start to look for outside advertising or other ways to expand your "super" potential.

Thanks for listening!

-Jim R.

Not sure what you're suggesting, exactly. There's some people working on something vaguely related at GuildWiki:Interactive map project, but I don't know if that's still going somewhere. Which maps are you talking about? Do you mean just editing the images or what? --Fyren 00:13, 27 December 2006 (CST)

Section Line under Header not showing[edit source]

Description: Section Lines under Headers do not appear.

Page: Any page w/o a TOC.

Problem: The first section header, if there is nothing before the header, has no line underneath the text.

Submitted By:Rapta Rapta Icon1.gif (talk|contribs) 18:31, 29 January 2007 (CST)

Not sure why this is happening, if it's a Wiki problem or something wrong with my browser. Seemed ok yesterday though. — Rapta Rapta Icon1.gif (talk|contribs) 18:28, 29 January 2007 (CST)

Only seems to affect the first header, and when there's no TOC, it seems. — Rapta Rapta Icon1.gif (talk|contribs) 18:29, 29 January 2007 (CST)
After testing - it appears that this only happens if the header is the top-most item on the page. If there's a TOC, or even a <br/> inserted to add a space, then the horizontal line shows correctly.
For testing, I'm currently using Win 2000sp4, IE6. But, I can try other browsers from home (although my guess is MW, and not IE, still worth mentioning what everyone is using). --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 18:52, 29 January 2007 (CST)
Right now, using Win XP MC SP2, IE6. — Rapta Rapta Icon1.gif (talk|contribs) 18:54, 29 January 2007 (CST)
I can't tonight - but you may want to poke through the release notes for MediaWiki v1.8 and 1.9. On Sunday GuildWiki was upgraded from v1.7.1 to v1.9.1. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 18:57, 29 January 2007 (CST)
It does appear to only happen in IE6. Not sure what changed yet, but it's probably due to the default CSS. --Fyren 21:30, 29 January 2007 (CST)

I still don't see anything wrong at our servers. I've been refreshing recentchanges multiple times an hour since I woke up about 13 hours ago. I personally haven't experienced slowness so I don't think it's on our host's network's end. Anyone experiencing slowness might want to try doing a trace to and seeing if there are problems like high ping or packetloss mid-route. --Fyren 07:51, 8 February 2007 (CST)

No worries Fyren. It apears the lag monster has vacated the premises this time. I've been on for over an hour and it looks good now. No lagging but I'll post again here if it comes back.--VallenIconwhitesmall.JPG Vallen Frostweaver 08:08, 8 February 2007 (CST)
I'll check ping and packetloss the next time the wiki slows down for me. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 08:34, 8 February 2007 (CST)
Funny... it's slow again (and has been fow an hour or so)... it has to be something to do with traffic. Early morning here it was fine but not now. I wouldn't mention this recurring slowness if it wasn't something new - not to mention others are experiencing it too.--VallenIconwhitesmall.JPG Vallen Frostweaver 13:26, 8 February 2007 (CST)
I don't think it's related to traffic as I have had slowness in the hours when wiki has the least visitors. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 13:31, 8 February 2007 (CST)
Major slowdown for me on GuildWiki off-and-on all week, and at all hours of the day/night from multiple pcs using different internet providers. I've tried multiple sites in both .com and .org domains, and no other sites seems affected.
I started some tasks earlier today here and just gave it up due to the horrendous slowdowns. I suspect if it can't be resolved soon, it'll spur migration of people to the official wiki. Sadly, I can't reach the official wiki from this PC due to a local firewall, so I'm pretty much S.O.L. on wiki participation at this point. :-( --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 13:51, 8 February 2007 (CST)

Another detail that may be of use. I can't even click the "back" button on my browser without it having to reload the page s..l..o..w.. as well.--VallenIconwhitesmall.JPG Vallen Frostweaver 14:27, 8 February 2007 (CST)

Atm wiki lags like hell for me, but ping is normal and packetloss 0%. Hmm... --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 17:13, 8 February 2007 (CST)
I'm not experiencing the lag at present but I ran a trace anyways. I'm currently getting about a 40ms response time from with zero packet loss on ping (approximately the same response time from trace) If you attempt to compare times I'm in the Central Time Zone of the US so you can approximate the number of hops it takes to get to the server. Lojiin 17:19, 8 February 2007 (CST)

I did some further checking and sometimes squid's reported response times are spiking. Not sure what's causing it since numbers for CPU, memory, and hits/usage aren't out of the ordinary. As a shot in the dark, I restarted squid. Keep posting if you think things are slow. (I still haven't noticed slowness; some people I asked have, some haven't.) I might end up upgrading squid to see if that helps, but that'd mean a little downtime. --Fyren 05:59, 10 February 2007 (CST)

Earlier today I attempted to access GWiki but the server timed out, giving a generic The Page Cannot Be Accessed message. That was...hmm...three hours ago maybe. Now, I loaded up GWiki but it took like 5 minutes just to reach Main Page. Once I'm actually on it seems to speed up a little bit, however I'm not even going to bother logging in because in general things are really quite slow and I'm always hovering on the edge of another timeout. Thankfully I already ported some of my common reference materials off Wiki, so I'm not totally in the dark...but, as it is I can't work on any of my Wiki rewriting projects...or make that new template. :( 21:46, 10 February 2007 (CST)

VERY slow, both from work (which routes through a corporate proxy in Europe), and from home (which uses comcast in the USA). No other sites affected. I haven't tried as an anon to see if that helps - but logged in it takes a LONG time for pages to load, and about 5% of the time they simply time out with a generic page could not be loaded message (NOTE: took two tries to post this because the connection timed out). --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 13:23, 11 February 2007 (CST)

Server clock[edit source]

Why does it seem that the server's clock is always running slow? Currently it appears to be ~ 8 minutes slow for me. I checked my preferences to make sure it wasn't a time zone offset or something like that (I don't have it set to -7:52 or anything). Obviously this isn't a huge issue, but it is one that seems to be ongoing and we've had issues where the clock has continuously lost time before so I'm kinda curious. --Rainith 06:42, 10 February 2007 (CST)

It's not using NTP since every time I ask Gravewit if our host has its own NTP server he doesn't respond and I forget about it, so like any other computer, it drifts. --Fyren 07:50, 10 February 2007 (CST)
all unix variants come with some form of NTP, and windows has it's own slightly broken NTP client built in. if you have console access to the box, i can give you instructions on implementing one of them. --Honorable Sarah Honorable Icon.gif 10:11, 27 May 2007 (CDT)
I don't know how to say this in any other way: reread what I said and try again. --Fyren 10:26, 27 May 2007 (CDT)
i'm going to guess by that cryptic comment you mean you don't have console access to the box, and must therefore wait for gravewit, as opposed to fixing it yourself. --Honorable Sarah Honorable Icon.gif 03:03, 28 May 2007 (CDT)
The key word I used: server. The key word you used: client. --Fyren 08:22, 28 May 2007 (CDT)
  1. nearly every NTP client is an NTP server, esp for unixes, who almost always use the offical deamon.
  2. why would the wiki box need an NTP server, since it does not have an attached time source?. it needs an NTP client, since it needs to collect time from an NTP server that is connected to a timesource, like one of the US naval observatories --Honorable Sarah Honorable Icon.gif 10:41, 28 May 2007 (CDT)

Search engine is too text specific and doesn't allow for variables[edit source]

Just wanted to report that your search engine is too text specific and doesn't allow for variables such as spelling mistakes. But, in particular, it doesn't allow for plural forms of words resulting in a "word not found".

For example, you could type "insect carapaces" and no results are found but you must type "insect carapace" in order to get a result. I think it would be a relatively easy matter to deal with and I'm surprised no one has addressed that issue yet.

thank you

This has been discussed previously and a fix has been suggested iirc, but no one with the access to do the changes has done them. --Gem-icon-sm.png (talk) 20:15, 19 March 2007 (CDT)
I've added a couple of redirects. I think redirects are the best solution to this kind of problem. <LordBiro>/<Talk> 07:29, 20 March 2007 (CDT)
I would vote against redirects. I see this as treating the symptom and not the problem. I could not imagine the work to add a redirect for every item in the game just so searches with a trailing 's' worked. It would seem that the code for the search could be changed to first run the search as entered and if the results are zero then rerun the search if there is a trailing 's' truncating the 's' during the search process. I am sure this can be said more logically but hopefully you understand my point. Glamtre 15:17, 3 April 2007 (CDT)

Pricing Guide[edit source]

Hey there,

Just had an idea for something you could incorperate into each page belonging to a green item. Basically, every time someone sells or buys that item in game, they could log the price they bought or sold it for into a calculator. The wiki calculator could then find the average amount, and the lowest and highest that the item has both been bought and sold for, so players could quickly reference and judge how much items are worth on the relevent item's page.

Thanks for considering this.

Won't happen. Free market economy. ANet only does things to slow price depreciation or does things to speed it up (free UW & FoW weekend, lavish loot weekend, double green weekend, etc). Otherwise, it's up to the players. --Mgrinshpon 11:12, 30 May 2007 (CDT)
we don't keep market prices. it'd take to much effort to keep up, and would be too easy to fake. however, marketwatch is a rough aproximation of that. --Honorable Sarah Honorable Icon.gif 22:03, 30 May 2007 (CDT)

I understand that it could be tricky to maintain and incorperate however I believe it could be tweaked to make it more useful and overcome the price changing ANet introduces from time to time which Mgrinshpon pointed out. The reason I suggested this is because currently the only way I can get a rough idea of how much things are worth is through GuildWarsGuru Auctions. The problem with this is that you only get x amount of items for sale per green item type, if any at all. It does not give a pricing guide as such over x amount of time. I tried to look at marketwatch which Honorable Sarah suggested but it did not work for me.

I believe that what I suggested would be greatly beneficial for the community as it will allow players to see a rough guide for how much things are worth as opposed to pure guesswork created from GuildWardGuru Auctions. Bearing in mind this wiki is viewed by a vast amount of players, getting the staistics input would not be an issue. To counter the fact that ANet do change prices from time to time, then the calculator could be set to only work out averages etc on a cyclical monthly basis to reduce this chance of statistical innacuracy.

the possibilities for abuse, and the effort required to implement a price tracking system, are far greater then any possible benefit. imaging if someone were to vandalize that page and bilk someone out of cash before it was reverted? how would we even verify someone got 60k for a tanzit's defender if they claimed they did? implementing statistical safeties to prevent abuse would require massive recoding of the wiki underpinnings.
moreover, there is the cultural issue; wikis operate on two counterbalanced principles, 1) most edits are good faith efforts to improve, and 2) every edit can be verified. market prices are by their nature difficult to verify without a transaction log, and mediawiki isn't set up to handle massive transactional information (see drop rate data, which is all manually calculated). no market transactions can be easily verified or reverted.
finally, you seem to reference anet adjusting prices. Anet does not set the player to player prices for any item, and only sets the algorithm for trader prices (reference Game updates/20060313, where the trader algorithm was bugged, and a roll back was required). ectos have dropped by around 15% in the last two weeks, for no apparent reason. how could we predict, or even react, to a change that occurs seemingly without explanation? --Honorable Sarah Honorable Icon.gif 01:14, 2 June 2007 (CDT)

I do agree that it is open to abuse, but surely it would be no different to any other data collection scheme such as Drop_rate/Inferno_Imp. That data applies to principle 1, yet noone but those who logged the imp data can verify it's accuracy (principle 2). On the drop rate page you showed me it even states "The hope is that with this project, players can make informed decisions instead of following rumors about drops." which is pretty much going along with the lines of how I imagine the data log for green purchase and sales would work. In answer to your last point, it's a difficult issue to overcome. The only thing I can currently think of is like a I mentioned before, a monthly or half monthly cyclical calculation, so that the data used is "current", which in turn should reduce price innacuracy issues due to algorithem changes within the game.

The problem of guildwiki's calculations being off, or not reacting in time, would not even be the problem/abuse I would worry about. What I'd be worrkied about here (and what nixes this whole idea IMHO) is the following scenario. I'm selling Shreader's Talons, which typically go for 1K or even less. I go to the wiki page and modify it to say they're worth 15K, and then try to sell them to some newb. When he asks if they're worth it, I say "check guildwiki". Unless he checks the -history-, which most newbs won't, he won't see that I vandalized the page to my own benefit. And how would the admins know for sure if it was vandalism or just a lucky sale that raised the price. With Drop Rates, there's no percentage in cheating the numbers, as that doesn't result in profit for the vandal. For item sale prices, that's not the case. yes ive recently created an account and everytime i log in it says u are signed in but when i click on another page im not logged on anymore.

I think that is a known error. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the way to fix it is to clear cookies and allow them from GuildWiki --Gimmethegepgun 02:57, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

RE: innapropriate pages[edit source]

Someone needs to check these two pages they are rather inapropriate. I wasn't sure where else to have sent this to. We have an 8 year old that plays GW and comes here for info. Please check these two and reset them accordingly.

See the above two responses. We appreciate your concern, and we do everything in our power to minimise vandalism of this kind. In the examples you quote, Quest was vandalised at 07:55 and reverted at 07:56. Storyline was vandalised at 07:57 and reverted at 07:59 (all times UTC). This is the downside of wikis - everyone is free to edit virtually anything, which leaves us prone to vandalism. The user(s) responsible has/have been banned. --SnogratUser Snograt signature.png 04:05, 1 July 2007 (CDT)

Hello, I am also very concerned about your adds from "" these are extreamly explicit, and I would not like to have such a user friendly site be marred by out-right porn. Please don not allow this kind of pornographic advertising on your site. This is one of the few good sites left on the net, and I would hate for you to loose users because of an inappropriate advertisement.

If you have young children or just don't want to see this kind of ads, but still want to use a wiki for GW help, you can either use the official Guild Wars Wiki or you could create an account and edit the monobook.css file of the account to disable the ads. -- Gem (gem / talk) 12:43, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

I also see the same problem. Formatting issue, with headings overlapping with topic headings. Also affects placement of 'navigation' heading on lhs menu on some pages. More formatting issues[edit source]

In IE7, the boxes on the left are a bit off. The "News" box no longer word wraps "Login Announcements" onto two lines, resulting in the right edge of the box being hidden by the article space. Also, the "Go" button in the "Search" box is mostly hidden under the article space, and the actual "Search" button is totally concealed. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 23:43, 22 July 2007 (CDT)

Search button nearly invissible[edit source]

Page: all pages. Submitted by someone who doesn't remember his acount name. Date: Sunday 12th of August 2007 at 15:30 p.m. +1 gtm.

Problem, Description and maybe how to fix it: The search button is nearly totally behind any page I open. Also the grey line on the right side of news is away. I think the is caused by the fact that those two things or too long, so they get behind the information you look at. So if those two things would be put in more lines the problem will be fixed I think. So it's just a minor problem, but still it looks better when it's fixed. :)

Browser? "Grey line on the right side of news?" "Those two things?" Screenshot? --Fyren 16:15, 12 August 2007 (CDT)

Standardize Photos[edit source]

One of the things I use the most in GuildWiki is the pictures of armor and weapons.

The problems I have with some of these pictures are:

Problem 1 Some frontal view armor pictures have the character standing at attention instead of the natural stance, which give a two dimensional view and makes it very difficult to determine what the side of the armor looks like.

This can be fixed by: a - Replacing the frontal standing at attention pictures with natural stance pictures. b - Adding sides and back views of armor so individual armor page appears;

Left View - Front View - Right View - Back View Torso Component - Arm Component - Leg Component - Head and Foot Components

Problem 2 Some armor pictures are taken on a background so dark that the armor blends into the background and is very difficult to see.

This can be fixed by: Replacing dark pictures with pictures taken in locations light enough to give good contrast between armor and background.

Problem 3 Some pictures of armor and weapons do not have a full sized view when clicking on the thumbnail.

I suggest making a Standardized Image Submission Form:

All armor images should show characters in natural stance on a well contrasted background and be cropped to character size. Examples: 1 - Incorrect stance and crop (frontal picture of character standing at attention with lots of background showing) 2 - Correct stance and crop (frontal picture of character in natural stance cropped to character size) 3 - Non contrasting background (picture of dark armor on dark background) 4 - Well contrasted background (picture of dark armor on light background)

Armor image set should include: 1. Small thumbnail of full frontal view at (size) 2. Large detail of full frontal view at (size) 3. Medium views at (size) of: a. Left view b. Front view c. Right view d. Back view e. Torso component f. Arm component g. Leg component h. Head and foot components (same image)

All weapon images should be cropped to show full weapon only on a well contrasted background. Examples: 1 - Incorrect view (picture of weapon on non contrasting background also showing full character and lots of background) 2 - Correct view (picture of weapon on well contrasted background cropped to weapon only)

Weapon image set should include: 1. Small thumbnail of full length view at (size) 2. Large detail of full length view at (size) 3. Medium views at (size) of: a. Full length side view b. Full length top view c. Front view d. Back view

Armor thumbnails can be placed on overall armor pages (like Ascalon Armor or Monk Armor), clicking on thumbnail would take you to the component page for that armor, clicking on the full frontal view will take you to the detail view page (large picture of full frontal view).

Weapon thumbnails can be place on overall weapons pages (like Swords), clicking on thumbnail would take you to the specific weapon page (four views of weapon), clicking on the full length side view will take you to the large detail picture.

I hope this helps. Cathy

this is neither a software bug, nor a technical issue. --Honorable Sarah Honorable Icon.gif 15:21, 9 September 2007 (CDT)
It's a nice idea in concept but quite a bit of work to undertake...I mean, you're basically saying to multiply every weapon pic we have by 5 times or something... Entropy Sig.jpg (T/C) 15:24, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

Broken Image Uploading as of the Move[edit source]

Due to the current wiki move, we can no longer upload images. Someone forgot to set the permissions on the image directory as writable :) Please fix. 00:50, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Here is the error:

The upload directory (/home/guildwiki/public_html/images) is not writable by the webserver.

Went onto the chat on wikia and talked to an admin. They contacted Europe with a message about our issue and mentioned that they would be waking up in europe in 1 to 2 hours. Roughly 2 1/2 hours later the problem was fixed :) Imaginos 05:46, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Firefox search bar currently broken[edit source]

I'm not sure if this was caused by the wikia move or not, but trying to search guildwiki through the firefox search bar has returned a 404 page for the past few days or so. An example: typing Channeling into the search bar gives this resulting URL which results in the 404 page. I'm not sure how this can be resolved, but after a few days of not being able to do searches from the bar I figured I'd look for a way to bring this to someone's attention :) --Goteki-45.jpg Goteki-45 16:19, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

The following works for me: Special:Search?search=Channeling You might want to consider uninstalling the FIrefox search bar, and just right click on the search field on the left side, pick "Add a keyword for this search...". Use "gw" as keyward, then in the future you can simply type "gw Channeling" in your address bar to search the GuildWiki. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa.png) 01:41, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Downloading Builds[edit source]

I think something is bugged with the Pvx builds when you download them. Before whenever you would download a build they each had their own name. I just downloaded a few builds and they were all named {art_name} If you try to download any other build it will not matter all of them have the same name. I know it did not used to be like this before, so if you try to download a second build a message will pop up saying this file already exists, and asks to replace. (even though it is a different file, has same name)

This should be taken up with the PvX admins, GuildWiki does not manage builds. --Wolfie Wolfie sig.jpg (talk|contribs) 01:46, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
