The Wikia staff noticeboard is intended as a way to alert Wikia staff of issues which need their attention. This place should not be confused with the Admin noticeboard.

Technical issues (server problems, MediaWiki extensions, etc)
Inappropriate advertisements (gold ads, flashing animation, automatic playing music etc.)

Special:Editcount

The stats are all wacked. It used to track all my contributions. Now the stats don't make sense even if I assume it only reflects "stats of the past month". -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 23:05, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I am not sure if this is a related error, but the edits shown from Special:Editcount any my Special:Preferences is different by more than 1,000 edits. (T/C) 17:46, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

My editcount in Prefs shows 3k spot-on. Nothing on Special:Editcount matches that. So, yeah. Weird. ---

Special:Editcount says I have ~18,000, with the most in any one namespace being ~6,500 in Main, while Special:Preferences says I only have ~11,000 total. Definitely confusing. —Dr Ishmael

Javascript problems

Site Completely Un-browse able Due to Script Error.

This is coming up for me on EVERY page on the wiki in Firefox2. Started a few days ago, but seeing as I haven't had any time to even use the computer, I'm just now reporting it. Anyone else having this issue? The page mostly loads, freezes for a few seconds then that pops up, and if I don't hit stop script, it will stay frozen. sidebar and top bar

These essential parts of the wiki skin refuse to show up for me unless I refresh each page several times. Sometimes IE does not even detect that there was an error. Either something siteside is broken or new Microsoft updates don't like GuildWiki. >.> (T/C) 04:55, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm seeing this in IE7 as well. In FF3, I'm seeing an error "quantserve is not defined" at various line numbers. (Quantserve is a tracking service from Quantcast.) I'm actually seeing this on other sites as well, now that I'm looking for it, so it's probably an error in Quantserve's javascript. —Dr Ishmael

Dunno if this is of any relevance, but in FF3, when I opened a page, it loaded the content, but not the top/side bars, then it sat there for a good 5 seconds saying "Transferring data from media.fastclick.net..." Would that be related to the cause of the problem? I dunno if wiki uses that site for anything. RoseOfKali

Nice illustration of the "uploaded, but missing picture" bug. Anyway, that funniness is because your browser doesn't receive the CSS from wikia. uploading images

I can not upload images any more. When I hit the "Upload" button, it blanks out whatever I had entered into the "Source filename" field, thus resulting in the "The file you uploaded seems to be empty..." error. (T/C) 09:11, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I had the same problem in IE7, started with all of the recent mumbo-jumbo crap. No error, but it clears the "Browse" field when I hit upload. RoseOfKali

broken tag somewhere

Occasionally when I load a page, everything is in the center, as if the entire page was enclosed in a <center> tag. One of them must be broken or unclosed somewhere in the code. (T/C) 19:55, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I've seen it on Felix's talkpage and also on the Recent Changes. Goes away with reload(s). I often have to reload many times anyway, to get the sidebars back.

wiki freezes up

On a diff comp, whenever i go to a Wikia wiki (GWiki being the most often), i see "Waiting for "http://pixel.quantserve.com/pixel/p-01-0VIaSjnOLg.gif?tags=ADSDAQ.HOBBIesINTeReSTS ..." at the bottom of my ie7 and it just stays like that forever... any solution? --Balistic Pve (T/C/E) 00:09, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

See above, it's a bug in Quantserve's javascript. It's very likely that this bug is also causing the sidebar/etc. to not load. Kyle has bugged the appropriate people about it. In the meantime, Firefox is not crippled by this bug, so you might want to try it instead. —Dr Ishmael

div#p-seg, div#bottom-ad { display:none; }

to your .css and that will take care of the hanging problem, and the sidebar one sometimes. However, since the default skin while not logged in is monaco, it can still hit you on the way in and out. >.>

Oh, I like that, but I can see how it's kind of useless too...after all we always prefer if people make an account, if only because it improves our WikiStats! It was my understanding that Gregor Mendel would be addressed as Brother only by those meeting or exceeding his status; and children or the like would address him as Father. But maybe I'm wrong on that.

Template:Showhide box

This is broken for me. The links to "show/hide" the box are missing. They also refuse to close on their own, even if there is more than one on a page as they normally would. Probably because they use JS for this sort of function (?), and that's usually broken for me. (T/C) 05:56, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Status updates

I've consolidated all these issues because I believe that they are related. I apologize that it is taking a while to get a fix out for this, but we're currently reworking the way that ads are displayed on Monobook, so it's taking a little bit longer than it should. Images without extensions

Recently there have been a few images uploaded to the wiki that lack a file extension in their name (Image:Ultimate collection ;D, Image:Great isn't it?-D are from today). Is there a way to prevent people from uploading files without extensions? --Shadowcrest 18:51, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Interlanguage links

I guess it's futile to ask for the wikis listed in Category:Templates/Links to be added to the interwiki map, but nl: and es: really should be in the interlanguage table (and maybe cn: for w:c:guildwarscn:)? gww:, gw2w: and w:c:pvx: are already on the interwiki list, were there others that need adding? I just checked the interlanguage table to ensure all the variations are in there - including es and nl. The four templates (gw.de, gw.es, gw.fr, gw.it) link to our "sister" wikis not on Wikia, and it'd be nice to have them on the list, even if they can't be set up in the interlanguage system. nl has kicked in too now. We can add the others to the interwiki list, but it's probably best not to use abbreviation with full-stops (periods) in. It probably won't have any effect, but it's good to be cautious. Is there another suitable abbreviation? Not getting enough ECs (lol)

So recently there have been a number of cases (many of them on my part) where someone writes a comment, and it "eats" someone else's comment, totally replacing it on the page. The other person's is still in the history n stuff. Normally, you get edit conflicts to prevent this. What's going on? (T/C) 21:14, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Another similar case is on articles; 2 people editing the same thing. Say, change [[Kournan Scouts]] to [[Kournan Scout]]s. The second to press edit doesn't get EC'd, the edit does show up in RC, but without any changes. As if the second person made a null edit (which don't pop up on RC). ---

It's an issue with Wikia's front-end cache servers, which use a memory caching service called Varnish. The Guru Meditation has a much older origin, though. —Dr Ishmael

Mendel suggested switching to the quartz skin to see if it worked, and it did. Switching back to monobook makes the wikis break again. --Macros 14:40, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Macros told me on irc that it doesn't happen on Quartz (I suggested tryng that), so the problem seems to be with Wikia's monobook and monaco skins - remember GuildWiki is special for having its own GWmonobook.php skin. I told him to try that because I caught a conversation on #wikia the other where another person seemed to have similar problems, possibly related to some plugins. --◄mendel► 22:59, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

HANGING CHADS?!

I've noticed with the new way that polls work - the tallies do not seem to update in any meaningful way until I make an edit to the page. For example, I have a few polls on my userpage. One of them had ~31 votes, another ~15, another ~3, and the last ~8. After I edited my page, the counts were ~40, ~30, ~18, ~24, or something like that.

Do we have to make null edits to see updated polls? Or is this yet another problem with IE? :C (T/C) 14:11, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Links not working

Lately when I'm trying to browse the main page, i have to take alternate routes because the direct link isn't working. For example, when i clicked on elite skills, it brought me to a page with a bunch of scripts and codes on it. There are also a few more links that are working right for me, i don't know if its a site problem or just me. Please let me know (if it is just me) if there's any way to fix the problem, any other input on the problem would be appreciated too.

Tabs broken for Monobook

I am extremely chagrined for making things very inconvenient for Monobook users for a while. Because of caching I hadn't realized that my change to Mediawiki:monobook.css had broken things when I logged off last night. I have since repaired the change, previewing that via my personal monobook.css (which I should have done in the first place), and I trust that when the cache updates — this should take less than 24 hours — , the top navbar will be gone (as it is now) and the personal links, tabs and logo will have moved up.

As a stopgap fix until the cache updates, you can add the following lines to your Special:MyPage/monobook.css or switch to Monaco temporarily.

#column-one { padding-top: 145px; }
#p-logo { top: 0em; }
#p-personal { top: 0.6em; }
#p-cactions { top: 1.9em; }

Browser performance

Unfortunately (as it looks very nice) I've had to disable the wintersday theme as it seriously degrades the performance of my browser while viewing it (FF3, other tabs are unaffected, only guildwiki tab). While scrolling the page there is heavy shearing of images (including the new background) and lag. This is the only site that I have experienced this on since I left dialup behind. Well I showed you what it looks like on Ice Cat, and to be honest Icecat is experiencing none of the problems anyone else is. There is no slowdown at all, no messed up images or anything. In fact it runs better on Icecat than on Firefox, no idea why to be honest. They are both using the same plugins. I don't think it's a browser- or OS-specific issue, I think it's because the images are somewhat large: the total file size of the two main background images is just under 500kB. You'd need quite a bit of processing power to scroll that much image data quickly. (Linux might have an edge up on Windows, though, as it has less kludge in the background taking up resources.) Also, the Wikia image servers run slow sometimes, which can delay page loading for some people. —Dr Ishmael

The images have to be loaded just once, unless your local browser cache is set to less than 5MB or so. I doubt the compressed size of the images matters any when scrolling is concerned; if it does, the browser fails. I should expect them to be rendered at screen resolution and scrolled from that. But since the trees are staying fixed, the text has to be redrawn on it with each scroll step; the browser can't simply "push the whole page up". --◄mendel► 23:32, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Feature proposal/request - Recentchanges enhancement

Something a bored tech might be able to whip up over an afternoon: For items in the Special:RecentChanges, add a class for each <table> corresponding to the namespace of the page in question. For simplicity, the naming can simply be by the namespace number. This will allow wikis (and/or users) to style RC entries depending on the namespace.

This greatly supplements (though still cannot serve as a replacement of) the current inadequate filtering system of RC (which only allows one namespace to be filtered in or out), especially when combined with page-specific CSS and special page transclusion. Users can create pages transcluding the RC, and use page-specific CSS to emphasize and de-emphasize multiple namespaces at once. -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 05:22, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

You can use a CSS3-compatible browser (well, there isn't one yet, but...) that can select on attribute-substrings; that way, you can invoke a CSS rule on the href or title attribute of a link, and with the sibling combinators you can probably style the rest of the line. Example for simple styling (without siblings) that works in Firefox 3:

I don't seem to have any problems loading wikia. It might just be your internet in general. We have Qwest DSL and for a long time we kept getting drops and horrible lag spikes. Turned out they had some errors at the distribution sub-station or whatever the thing is called. At least, that was the "official" story. Once that was fixed, it ran perfect. And the bastards kept telling us to get a new modem... We did, but then we returned it, cus that wasn't the problem. Your timeouts seem painfully familiar... RoseOfKali

Square box ad on a "short" page

The ad logic tries to estimate the length of a given page to determine how short it really is. Character count is one of the measures that it uses. The two tools are only loosely related. The one that you linked to was part of a social tools package that was only available on a select number of wikis (5 I think). The one that we released last week, which is available on this wiki, is inspired by that tool, but it shares no common code. Maybe - just maybe - it would then be possible to actually update a video that has become unavailable or for which a better version has become available from the video's page - right now you have to remember the video name and go through the edit bar tool (even if you don't want to edit a page) -- and I haven't tested that, so is it actually possible?

On a related note, the Image embed tool sucks particularly hard because all the warnings that Special:Upload has are just being bypassed, and users may not even be aware that a page is being created. Bug with license preview of Image upload edittool

One of the licenses we use and available from the dropdown selector was Template:Mediawiki+GuildWars screenshot. The edittool uploader's license selector parsed it as Template:MediaWiki GuildWars screenshot. While we could add a redirect on our end to get around this issue, this reflects a general bug that affects all Wikia wikis, and some of the other wikis might not happen to have users who have a clue what to do (if things were set up by previous generations of users who are no longer around), so ideally it's best to fix the bug in the code. -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 06:55, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Bug with CSS of Image upload edittool

Listing this as a sub-heading because this is a separated but related bug: The edittool is outside of the DOM the regular wiki content area and wrapped in a .reset, so a number of default/standard CSS style rules that generally apply in the content area do not apply inside the edittool interface (or got "reset"). This creates problems where the license template previews ARE wikitext expected to be viewed inside content area, but do not receive the right styling. The most notable example is bulleted lists, which our Fairuse template uses. In the edittool license selector preview, the bullets have list-style-type as "none", creating the visual effect of awkward linebreaks. Again, we could add stuff in our common.css to override your stuff, but it's an issue that hits all wikis and so ideally Wikia could to the work for everybody instead. -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 07:22, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

It seems like the worst of the problem could be resolve by adjusting the list-style-type? It may not be quite as pretty, but the purpose of the license text preview in the image uploader is to give users a sense of the text that will appear so that he or she can choose the most relevant option. Image Upload tool ignores warnings

The image upload tool on the Monaco edit window toolbar doesn't display any warnings, for anything, that Special:Upload does. Not for duplicate files, not for previously deleted images, not for images that begin with "gw" (screenshots that get uploaded without descriptive names). This sucks big time, especially as some of our sysops are getting annoyed with having to delete these kinds of images. --◄mendel► 08:51, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

In many cases these are intentional design decisions. For example, MediaWiki:Uploadtext is left out because on many wikis this is rediculously large and would take up way too much screen real-estate to display. (Plus, in many cases, they messages are kind of mean and scare off would-be contributors.) You can, however, edit the text that is displayed at the top of the upload tool locally using MediaWiki:Wmu-uploadtext. Internationalization of sidebar, Monaco-sidebar, and monaco-toolbox defaults

When the local wiki has customized those in the native language, please have the internationalization also use use those by default, instead of grabbing the Wikia international default.

This way users with interface set to a language not native to the wiki will not get a sidebar of links many of which might not work at all (especially if there is heavy customization). We at GuildWiki have carefully constructed our sidebar, monaco-sidebar, and monaco-toolbox so that all the text labels use MediaWiki messages for proper internationalization.

This is an English wiki. A sidebar fully customized with GuildWiki menu items using incomplete internationalization is a much lesser evil than a fully internationalized sidebar that only has Wikia's default menu items. Likewise, if I visit a Japanese wiki while using English interface, I'd rather see the local customized menu items incompletely internationalized to English as opposed to seeing a fully English menu that only has the default menu items from Wikia.

Mystery DIVs with margin-top: -20px in the DOM

When editing this page and the Admin noticeboard using non-sectional edit mode in Monaco skin, there is a unnamed div with margin-top:-20px right after #contentSub. It does not appear when I edit sections, and it does not appear when I edit other pages (not that I have found yet).
In Special:MultipleUpload, there is an unnamed div with margin-top:-20px inside the div right after #contentSub.

These divs are messing up with our CSS customization. Their sole purpose appears to be to compensate for the margin of contentSub in the original Monaco CSS (which our customization overwrote). Because the div's location is different in case 1 and case 2, and because it is hard to guess what other locations it may pop up (GuildWiki:Sandbox for example is not affected, so it's not tied to namespaces), I want to request that these divs be given a unique identifier so that we can style them with one single rule to get rid of the problem, instead of hunting them down one by one. -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 21:11, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Tips widget less random when embedded

When using widget tags to embed the tips widget, the tip contents become part of the cache, which significantly reduces it's value. To keep the randomness while not destroying caches, I would suggest maybe have up to five tips preloaded into the embedded widget, then use On Dom Ready or On Load javascript to randomize which one of the five gets displayed. That way the page embedding the tips can still be cached, while the tips still change around when you reload the page. This is one of the widgets that probably have less value to the people who KNOW how to add widgets to the sidebar, but extremely valuable to the general visitors.

CSS conflicts in YUI classes with Semantic Forms

Both Wikia's Monaco skin and Semantic Forms use YUI. Some of the Monaco CSS rules use overly generic selectors that also affects the display of YUI objects Semantic Forms used. I've already applied some local overrides that works for GuildWiki at MediaWiki:Common.css, however our solution may not work or may be inadequate for other wikis using Semantic Forms. Please have the Monaco related rules use additional skin-related selector classes to avoid affecting Semantic Forms so that it doesn't become broken when other wikis try to use it. Please turn off CategorySelect

I've heard only negative feedback so far; it makes checking the categories a different task from editing the page, it is not as evident which categories are set by templates, and unless one is creating pages or add a new category to a number of pages (which can be done better by bot), I don't see how it would be useful to this wiki. I'd recommend that you disable it in your personal preferences if you prefer not to use it. It is on the Editing tab under "Disable Category tagging." Right now we are not disabling it on entire wikis; however, it is something we may be able to do in the future. Search feature in Firefox

The changes to the Wiki pages seem to hinder the search field in Firefox. In the field to the right of the adress bar, it's possible to add a certain Wiki to the list of search engines, allowing for a very quick and easy way to access articles on that Wiki. Because of the recent changes, I end up at the "template" version of an article instead of the article itself.

Here's an example of such a template: Template:Glyph_of_Swiftness

Skills aren't part of this program (well, that's what the page says). I'm using Firefox too, and when I enter Glyph of Swiftness in the search bar, I get Glyph of Swiftness, not the template page. I tried a few more, all worked as one would assume. ---

It's case-sensitive - try "glyph of swiftness" vs. "Glyph of Swiftness". The first goes to the template, the second to the main article. I dunno why, but creating a Glyph of swiftness redirect will fix it. —Dr Ishmael

The Search field in the GWiki toolbox on the left seems to return talkpages instead of their articles. Happened to me while trying to search for "disc of chaos." Also, usually linking in the format of "Talk:Disc_of_Chaos#Wikia_bug" was sufficient, but now it wouldn't work without the ".3F" in the end of the link, it only opened the talkpage, but didn't drop down to the specified section. Shadow Refuge mini icon substituted by text

The icon for the skill Shadow Refuge does not appear in the "Skills used" listing on the pages of enemies that have it in their build, or in miniature under "Related skills". Instead, the text "Shadow Refuge" simply appears twice (see for example Bramble Everthorn or Feigned Neutrality).

User Entropy confirmed seeing the same issue, and reloading my cache did not fix it. She suggested posting here because I have been noticing this icon missing on enemy skill listings for almost 2 weeks now. The icon itself is not affected on its Image page, and full-size versions of it (such as on Shadow Refuge) appear normally. Only when it should appear in miniature is it replaced by text. Spam Filter

I have many different songs on my userpage, all but one with a youtube video associated with it. Today I tried to add another one, however the spam filter would not allow me to save because it decided that (Number deleted because the spam filter blocks me from saving this complaint with it in there, oh the irony) (the youtube address of the associated video) was a link to an outside page. 1.14 update breaks things

Monobook skin problem (resolved)

The update is here, and with it came a change that makes Monaco user see an allinone.css , no personal monaco.css (but the central global.css loads), and Monobook is badly broken because none of MediaWiki:common.css , MediaWiki:monobook.css or the personal monobook.css load. The poll seems to work reliably for Monaco and not for the Monobook skin. The workaround: add ?useskin=monaco to the URL of a page that you want to vote on, load it, and then vote. If the URL has a # character, add it before that! --◄mendel► 21:46, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Quartz Not Working

Missing inages/maps from pages

I've been doing The Underworld this afternoon with the appropriate mission pages as a guide. Suddenly all the maps disappeared when I opened a new page. I've only tested the Underworld, but all the maps have vanished from all the Quests (see, for example, http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Unwanted_Guests). I've checked with 5 browsers to be sure it's not just IE7 playing around. Looks like a CSS failure to load; the pages concerned all had advert column on the right.

Yes, It did. The reason I gave that as an example rather than one of the other 9, was that I printed it to disc. It had a table in the mid-upper right side with a small map in the base. All the quest writeups for The Underworld did. Presumably you've never been to any of these Quest pages. http://wikistats.wikia.com/dbdumps/dbdumps.html is there, but recent server work means that the current dumps are significantly out of date. We hope to resume regular runs soon, and are looking at better ways of providing these dumps (weekly runs of 20,000 wikis... even when many are small or inactive... ouch!) In the mean time, please mail us using Special:Contact whenever you need a db dump, and we will update manually. There are two ways to do it more simply:

Open the page for editing, then save it without any change.
Add ?action=purge to the page URL and load it like that

Your pages will update by themselves, but when the wiki is busy it can take some time.

Buggy Skin?!

Okay, so I was using Gamer Monaco for awhile. But when I change to one of the other Monacos there's a bug where my main background is staying on Gamer(Meaning it's black, instead of white) so I got sick of not being able to see some text(Like the pop up info on PvX, text stays white, to go with the black background, except the pop up box is still white). So I switched to Slate(I think that was the name of it), and yesterday, I log in, and find that my skin is switched to Sapphire Monaco, I go to preferences in a crazy confused rage, and find that Slate no longer exists. You're probably thinking of Quartz Slate. We removed Quartz and a number of other unsupported skins from the skin chooser two weeks ago for a number of reasons, but largely because we no longer support those skins, and some javascript changes that we will be making over the next few weeks will break some functions on those skins. In most cases, we have allowed users to continue browsing Wikia using those skins if they were already selected in their preferences; however, we were unable to do so with Quartz.

That said, you should not be seeing any significant bugs with Monaco. The Gaming theme does have some problems on wikis that were not designed to be used with the Gaming theme, but most of the other themes should work fine. (I should note that some of the CSS customizations on GuildWiki could cause unexpected results as well.) If you are experiencing difficulty with Monaco, please give us a yell so we can take a look at it. Rider Page links out of Wiki

Was looking at the Perdition Rock page, and clicked on the Rider link to look at them in more detail, and it immediately links out of Wiki. A message box pops up saying your computer maybe under threat from viruses or something, and it takes you to a computer scanning page. Obviously I didn;t stick around to find out anymore, and closed it straight away. Disruptive auto-play Video ad

There is a video advertisement using "Smart Player", powered by "Smin" (or something similar, font too small to read properly). The video auto-plays with sound on when you scroll near it (so it might still not be visible yet when it plays). Additionally, it is a "nested" ad, where an inner advertisement plays first (with the message that the "actual video" will play in X seconds). When the inner advertisement plays, sound can only be muted from a control inside the video area, and cannot be muted from the volume control built into the "Smart Player" interface. When the "actual video" (which is the real advertisement) starts playing, it uses the Smart Player's volume settings and ignores the mute from the inner-advertisement previously.

This means I muted the ad once (no way to STOP it from playing), went back to reading my article, then had to be distracted AGAIN to mute the ad a second time.

I went back to reading the article, and after a while, I heard the advertisement audio playing AGAIN. This time, it was actually caused by another identical ad further down the page, although I did not realize it at the time and first scrolled up to check in the first advertisement. It was probably a good 10 seconds of being annoyed and frustrated and distracted before I found the ad further down the page and muted it. It turned out the page I was on had THREE copies of that video advertisement.

It was the utmost distractive and frustrating experience with advertisements I have had on ANY website ever. I have been finding auto-play video ads tolerable if they are muted by default. This video advertisement crossed two lines at once: first when it auto-plays with sound, and second when it switches from one video to another which brings BACK sound when I have muted the ad initially. -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 02:37, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Really weird wiki hybridding.

So since Wikia forgot my login for GWiki I haven't been logging in save to post here and there, and spend most of my time on my anonymous IP login. Recently I've been using WoWWiki and GWiki, depending on what I'm playing. I've noticed recently that the really dark theme from WoWWiki transplanted itself onto GWiki while I'm not logged in, and it goes so far as... The Search Bar on the lefthand side? It's powered by Google, and only searches the internet itself or WoWWiki, not GWiki. Could probably flush my cache to fix it, but I figured it might be something to look into. I see two issues: one is seeing a skin while logged out: this has been a wikia bug for some time, usually in the form of monobook users keeping monobook even after logging out when it should be Monaco custom, so I suspect some cookies are keeping your WoW skin settings alive even though you are logged out and on another Wikia wiki. Clear your (wikia-related) cookies and all should be well.

The other issue is the google search bar being affected by CSS from sites you are watching; unless it is transparent, this is probably a bug in the search bar. --◄mendel► 09:32, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Contents boxes don't work in all browsers with default skin

Currently there is an issue with ~~Firefox~~ the default skin where Contents show/hide boxes don't work. When a page loads, it appears to be merely defaulted to not show...

...but upon clicking on "show," it seems that there is nothing TO show!

Note that ~~this issue seems to be Firefox only, and~~ I was not logged in and thus using the default skin. Users with monobook or custom Monaco selected report no problems. 00:26, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

RTE removes page content, removes even categories on attempt to revert [4]
RTE completely fails at editing a table [5] (Monk headgear)
RTE cascades enumeration [6]
RTE eliminates linebreaks near div tags, which implicitly removes p tags, which breaks formatting [7]
RTE creates monster diff, including <tt> bug and a basically unreadable table. [8]
RTE adds up to 4 linebreaks near div tags (still eliminates others, see above) [9]
RTE removes hotlinked images [10]
RTE removes line breaks, putting <h2> and </h2> tags on the same line, which in turn makes the parser insert an additional level of <span> tags, which breaks our .css and makes the headline disappear [11]

The reason that the RTE fails so hard has become clear to me with some recent blog interface malfunctions: the RTE is really a HTML editor. The wiki software gives it specially "enriched" HTML, which is edited, and when that is saved, Wikicode is generated back from that HTML. I guess ultimately Wikia is going to abandon Wikicode and run its software on HTML pages (with lots of namespaces and lots of Javascript). Say welcome to bloat. --◄mendel► 08:08, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Hanging on images.wikia or wikia-ads.wikia

Today, when I'm on wikia, the connection keeps transferring data from either wikia-ads.wikia.com or images.wikia.com - and not going any further - is anyone else having this problem, it's annoying because no Javascript is loading either. Talk 14:02, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

I've gotten that before, it would completely hang up on that and not load any wikia content. Sometimes it's also google syndication ads or something like that. Just have to keep reloading. >_< RoseOfKali

I agree that that sort of ads is a big problem, as it makes the content a pain to use. Whenever I find a site that has the text ads, it makes me think that either my computer has spyware doing that or the site is trying to give me such spyware--even though the reality is generally neither of those, but merely that the site owner doesn't want people to visit the site. And then I leave that site.

However, I don't see that sort of ads here. I tried logging out and going to a variety of pages, and never saw the text ads. I do see analogous ads on other sites from time to time, so my browser doesn't automatically block them. I've gone in and manually blocked the site for one type of ads, but that's from a different company and wouldn't have blocked the ads in that picture. Quizzical 04:28, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

This ad model is being tested (read:adjusted) on some wikis, and somebody turned it on for everyone by default by mistake. If Wikia goes with infolinks, they'll likely restrict them to mainspace and users who are not logged in, like the rest of the ads. There was rioting on the #wikia irc channel until Toughpigs, aka Senior Community Development Manager Danny Horn, came online, apologized, and hunted down a technician to turn it off. I really, really hope that they're not going to bring those text links back. I understand that they need money and am fine with a lot of advertising because of it, but not ads that make pages awkward to use. Ads that cover up content, make noise, or do annoying things when you mouseover them are the three types that I'll usually leave a site over. Text link ads are two of those three, and seem to be designed to get you to accidentally click on the ad right when it pops up instead of the "normal" link you were trying to click on, as you accidentally mouse over a text link with a pop-up window just before clicking. Dunno about others, but this wiki relies heavily on using links on content pages, this type of ads would render most articles useless or at the least extremely annoying to browse. If it was restricted to mainspace, monaco, not logged in users, then I would only complain on principle since I'm never on the wiki without being logged in...but, I have no doubt that it would certainly piss off *a lot* of visitors. The "normal" ads we have are bad enough; with "infolinks", we sink to the level of Guru almost. :\ (At least we don't have popup ads on every other page...)

I can contribute a stack of bus tokens towards RebelWiki, other than that I'm broke. Entropy

WikiBot "vandalism"

User:WikiaBot has made two edits to our Wiki recently, both of which I've had to undo: one was about the license change (doesn't apply to us), and the other was setting up Blog:Recent posts (we already had a better page like that, linked from Recent Changes rather than the sidebar; we announced the blog feature, but it hasn't caught on, so we won't link it from the sidebar).

These actions, along with rollouts of features that are unpopular at our wiki, reinforce Wikia's reputation for not really caring about our community.

To prevent that, Wikia could restrict sysop-level changes to wikis that have no active admins: i.e., Special:ListUsers and WikiaStats know when users have last logged on, so maybe only wikis that haven't had an admin log on recently should be edited by WikiaBot?

Failing that, may I ask that GuildWiki be exempt from these changes in the future, especially if they concern changes that have been publicised via system-wide sysop talkpage messages and/or the central Wikia forums?

Content box bug still there

When first opening the site in IE7/Monaco/anonymous, the content box appears nonfunctional; a few page loads later it works. As long as that behaviour exists, it would be nice if those content boxes could again default to "open". --◄mendel► 02:36, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
