I'd like to request interwiki link with the PvXwki (http://www.pvxwiki.com) using the '''PvX:''' prefix, so that [[PvX:Main Page]] would like to PvXwiki's main page. -[[User:PanSola]] (talk to the [[Image:follower of Lyssa.png]]) 21:04, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

:I've added that to the [[w:Interwiki map|Interwiki map]] but that's not currently in use on this wiki. I'll try to get this enabled here. Is it going to be a problem if [[w:whatever]] links point to the Central Wikia instead of to Wikipedia? [[User:Angela|Angela]] 12:44, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

::Nothing on GWiki links to Wikia, so that would be a problem unless all existing W:something links were converted as part of this change. Also it would take a bit of getting used to since W:X linkage is second nature here now; may want to make a Site Notice or whatever [[Image:Entropy Sig.jpg]] ([[User_talk:Entropy|T]]/[[Special:Contributions/Entropy|C]]) 02:24, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

:::From what PanSola has written, thought the idea was we could use something like <nowiki>[[PvX:Minion Master]]</nowiki> in an article and it would go to an article named "Minion Master" on the PvX wiki, or have I mis-read something here? --[[User:Wolfie|Wolfie]] [[Image:Wolfie_sig.jpg|19px]] <small>([[User_talk:Wolfie|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Wolfie|contribs]])</small> 02:33, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

::::You're right. That's what it will do if it's set up. I was just wondering if applying the rest of Wikia's interwiki map here would cause problems since it includes w: to mean Wikia, whereas this wiki seems to use w: to mean Wikipedia. [[User:Angela|Angela]] 03:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

:::::A simple bot to convert all W: to Wikipedia: or something like that would eliminate that problem, I think...Other than that minor snag, interwiki-map ability would certainly be handy for PvX linking. ::::::If there are still any w: links left, they will need to be changed to [[Wikipedia:]] instead of [[w:]] but it looks like that was more common anyway. [[User:Angela|Angela]] 04:52, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Bad Coding?

I'm new to the wiki and have been trying to update the monster pictures. i was instructed by some helpful comunity members to replace the old images instead of adding a whole new one to the database. While this has worked for me usually, I've been having problems repalacing the old Modniir pictures. I have entered the replace file with updated version link and uploaded the appropriate picture from my computer. However, instead of uploading the image as I desired, it instead distorted the old image to the dimentions of my image and failed to load my new image. How can I go about fixing this without uploading entirely new files to the database?--Lord Twitchiopolis 01:59, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

You may need to clear your browser cache. Refresh the page, it might be showing up incorrectly but actually be correct. --Shadowcrest 02:00, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

thanks. It showed up correctly approx 15min after I edited it....must have alot in cache V_V'--208.40.188.107 02:02, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Odd Ads

Recently I saw an ad advertising http://www.mobularity.com. It was an annoying flashy ad saying "IS YOUR LOVE CHEATING ON YOU?," while flashing between hot pink and black. There is also an ad for Live-Giveaway.com, advertising a "free" Guild Wars Nightfall. Naturally, this seems suspect. (Signed later than should have been by Theta Republic 23:42, 14 December 2007 (UTC) )

I have just encountered an ad while viewing "Sunspears in Cantha." It was an ad for "www.GdpChina.com." It said it had 10 billion gold in stock. Gee, makes me want to know what kind of builds they use. :P Theta Republic 06:48, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
I also saw the "Is your love cheating on you?" ad, I saw it, I think when I was on my talk page unlogged, I came here to report it, logged in, and on that that screen, I saw it again. Thoughtful 19 12:31, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Annoying Ad

Lately I have been seeing a particularly annoying advertisement popping up which I feel is both "Inappropriate" (flashing animation w/rainbow colors) and somewhat smutty as well. Its banner reads "Calculate the exact name of your lover!" or something to that effect, while two static cutouts "kiss" in the background. I can't get the target link for the ad, since it's made in Flash and thus a "Properties" isn't obtainable through a simple right-mouse click, and this sort of ad almost always leads to sites which could compromise your Internet security...not to mention the ad already hints at what sorts of top-quality content could be found there. It may not be explicitly pornographic, but I think this toes the line of acceptable/tasteful content. Entropy Sig (T/C) 05:50, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I need the URL it points to to be able to block it. You might be able to get that by viewing the html source of the page if it isn't right-clickable. Angela 12:41, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Obscene annoying ad

Have you checked the link to FuryWiki? It is both obscene and annoying, and has nothing to do with game information. Legend Victoria

It's not exactly an ad, but it seems the admins over there are doing absolutely nothing. I'll go revert it now. Cress Arvein 02:06, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Actually, after looking at the wiki itself, the link is worthless. I'll try to get it removed. Cress Arvein 02:11, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Questionable "sponsors" ad

On the sidebar, under "sponsors" noted an advert claiming to offer "Download Guild Wars", this caught my interest as ArenaNet would be the only source for downloading the GW client. The link has the claim "Stop paying for new games! One time fee to download for life", my concern is that this may either be a scam (pay them a fee just to to download the GW client), or an illegal software site (though, without a valid product key, don't think you'd get far). The link was [1]. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 05:22, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for reporting it. I'll have that one blocked. Angela 12:46, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

farming bot ads

One of the Ebay farming bot ads is sported right at the bottom of this page, as I'm typing this... It advertises 4 (random?) GW-related things offered on Ebay, 2 of which were farming bots. Type "guild wars" into an Ebay search and you will get a million hits, half of which will be bots. Nothing from Ebay should ever make it onto a wiki page, since Ebay is swarming with illegal bots and gold traders. In one of the reviews I saw a person complaining that they got permanently banned for using this particular bot, on a 2 year-old fully developed account. And I thought to myself "How naive did you have to be to buy a bot and not expect this to happen?" Too bad, he lost 2 years worth of play and over $100 worth of software for being greedy. Here is the current ad's url: 110192351486.jpg If possible, can you block anything that says "ebay" anywhere in the link? Thanks. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 03:15, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Here's another, with different content, same ad template: 330187609953.jpg. Please block anything with "ebay" in the string, since they seem to be randomly generated. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 03:18, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Does the community as a whole really want the whole of ebay blocked? It seems better as a first step to just block the problem ads themselves... what do you think? -- Sannse 12:29, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
The ads are randomly generated (the string of 12 numbers in the end), which means you will block one out of 10^12 permutations, which is wasted effort. And like I said, Ebays sells more bots than any other GW-related merchandise, so yes, block them ALL, or don't bother. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 03:06, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
I thought that "farm", "farming", "run", "running", "gold", etc. were automatic red flags which caused ads to be blocked...we don't have to block all of Ebay unless their permutation program is advanced enough to do stuff like "Sell B0T for GW" (with a zero). Entropy Sig (T/C) 04:56, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
And this is coming from a person who got offended by a "Love Button" ad. :P (No offense, just find it funny ^_^). I thought that you block the address of the ad, which just says "blablablaebayblablasomenumbers" and has none of those flag words in it. Or does the blocking software analyze the ad's content? That would be too advanced for a free website. All in all, I will repeat myself again: Ebay has hundreds of, dare I stress, illegal bots up for sale as soon as you type "guild wars" in the search. It should not be anywhere near a wiki site that supposedly promotes honest gaming. It's not even about honesty as much as it is about the fact that any player will get banned for using one, thus, a wiki should not provide a direct link to such things. Just try the search yourself and you will see what I'm talking about. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 05:31, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
I remember reading that Wikia blocks any ad that contains "gold" in some form or other. I don't think it's possible through image scanning or anything, but for any sort of text or code it would be easily checked...meh. Also, I'm not sure that we should be responsible for players' actions. It's obvious that our ads aren't things that we support or endorse. If someone was dumb enough to use an illegal bot advertised through EBay, that is their stupid decision and they deserve to be banned for it. If they claimed "well I saw an ad on Gwiki!" then that is a lame excuse...
Still, considering how strongly we police the gold ads, I guess you have a point. It is to some extent our responsibility to promote positive GW stuff. We certainly don't allow pages for illegal third-party software or mods (though we have some that are...questionably used...) Entropy Sig (T/C) 05:38, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Also, I just noticed that the links I provided only lead you to the thumbnail image that was displayed next to the sale items list, so the ad is not a single banner, it's a combo of several "frames" or whatever you want to call them. I would have given you all the links had I noticed this earlier. My bad. My argument is still correct, though. Wiki should not provide a link to a site that is swarming with illegal bots. Don't know how else to convince you. If someone wants to shop Ebay, then can go there directly at their own discretion. Everyone knows about it anyway. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 05:42, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, we block ads with the word "gold" (although the people writing the ads do all they can to bypass such filters of course!). I've mailed the guy that looks after our ads, and asked for a block on ebay or, if he thinks it is worth trying, a block on "bots", "farm" and "farming". I'll let you know what I hear back -- Sannse 12:01, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 20:00, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Another bad ad

[2]

I find the ad's language to be coarse, if implicit. "The Love Button - Push Me Hard!" just doesn't seem to convey the sort of attitude we want here. Entropy Sig (T/C) 05:42, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Again here, I have to ask if this is considered offensive by the majority here? We are happy to block anything that offends the majority of wiki users, or violates the rules of the game, but obviously we can't account for every taste, or we would never have ads at all. (wait! is that the plan!? ;) -- Sannse 12:32, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
To be honest I'm of the mind that ALL ads catering to sexually deprived/depraved preteens should be blocked anyways. Companies like that don't deserve to live... Entropy Sig (T/C) 04:58, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Actually, this ad had nothing to do with sex or explicit images. All it did was trick you into thinking it will give you your "true love's" name, while gathering a bunch of your information for sale. They made the ad seem like it leads to explicit content just so people would click it in the first place. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 05:37, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
It's still harmful, then. Information sale over the internets is a dangerous business to put yourself into, especially unknowingly. Entropy Sig (T/C) 05:39, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
True, but wiki is not responsible for police-ing people who can't recognize a phish, whether in E-mail or on a site. That should be common sense to any internet user. However, a guild wars wiki IS responsible for guild wars related illegal software ads, or directly explicit content, etc. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 05:46, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
That's a thin line to walk between what's obvious and what's not obvious, isn't it? What exactly are we responsible for policing - just Guild Wars related stuff and what we deem as "obviously malicious/inappropriate"? That seems like a double standard... Entropy Sig (T/C) 05:50, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

All I'm trying to say is that this one was a drop in the ocean. These things are all over the internet. I have nothing against blocking them, but it just seems like wasted effort. On the side note: thanks for all your contributions, Entropy. I seem them all over both GW wikis, and you are a valuable user. Not many people honestly give a d@mn about this :P, except for when they want to see a pretty picture or find a trick on how to beat a mission. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 05:59, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I blame society for acclimating us to seeing shitsauce adds on all sorts of otherwise clean and legitimate websites. Point taken.
Uh, I don't contribute to GWW or PvXWiki at all. That must be someone else. (Damn, they stole my username!) Entropy Sig (T/C) 06:04, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Agreed. I just find things like this sort of "benign" anymore. The worst it could do is spam your E-mail inbox or wake you up at 8am with a sale call if you're silly enough to give a phone #. Explicit content is always offensive, though. As well as it really sux to get banned permanently.
Hehe, maybe I'm just so used to seeing your name that it seems like it's everywhere. :P Your sig stands out. RoseOfKali RoseOfKaliSIG 06:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Awesomesauce. The ad now has a new permutation. "Is Your Love Cheating On You?" with two silhouettes of...hmm...sluts in the background. And it blinks, too. Wonderful. Entropy Sig (T/C) 03:55, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Ebay ads

Hi all, Michael tells me he has blocked these. If you see any more, please let me know. If possible, please right-click on the ad and give me the url shown for Image Properties - Location, or for the text link. It's also useful to know what page you saw the ad on. Thanks -- Sannse 20:56, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks all.. these have all been reported. It's annoying, because they are all from Google, who were specifically working with us to block gold ads. Possibly the problem is that they don't actually have text to filter out, they are images. But either way, we don't want them of course! I've asked our guy who deals with the ads about this. He'll get in touch with our Google representative for more help. Keep those links coming, and screenshots are welcome too -- Sannse 10:25, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Isn't there a possibility to disable image ads in the google ads service? That would solve the problem if images can't be filtered through word filters. -- Gem (gem / talk) 12:59, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
There's a new graphical ad, this time a WoW power leveling service, http://elitewow.com/. It seems like most graphical ads are illegal WoW/GW related ones so disabling them would be a good idea. -- Gem (gem / talk) 22:02, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Cross Site Scripting, unkonown if bug

(somewhat) inappropriate ad

The ad for Adult Swim with the half-naked man is hardly appropriate for the wiki, in my opinion. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.255.226.122 (contribs) .

"New Messages"

As seen here, numerous users are getting a "new message" messagebox when this IP gets a message, when it is not their IP --Gimmethegepgun 02:30, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

It's affecting other wikis on Wikia too. They are working on fixing it right now. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 04:14, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
and Catherine says "please pass on our apologies, it should be better soon." -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 04:15, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Cool, had a chat with some of the Wikia support guys on their IRC server (hope no-one minds me trying to escalate this), for the technically inclined as far as I can deduce, the problem apparently is that the cache/proxy server (Squid) had a configuration change that caused external Internet IPs to appear as an internal address to the wiki server(s). This in turn confused the heck out of the software as probably was seeing different users on the same IP address (just on different ports), which likely explains why when User talk:10.10.20.183 is updated, multiple users get notified of a new message. Anyway, as noted already, it being fixed. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 04:51, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Since new ppl are gonna keep trying to post on the talk page anyways, I have protected it from anons (it's not gonna make the problem worse, and might make it better). Please discuss the bug and/or the protection here. Since the talk page doesn't correspond to any actual user's IP, protecting that talk page doesn't affect anyone's rights. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 09:18, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Seems the "converting to internal IP address" issue still exists (see Special:Contributions/10.10.20.183) over 24 hours later, any further updates? --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 07:52, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Again, same IP still contributing. Do we know anything else as of yet? Isk8Isk8 18:28, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
This is warw, I'm getting it directing me to multiple talks which none of them are mine. ~Él Kíngíé (warw)
So in other words, issue is still present and escalating. Is that 10.x.x.x IP causing annon users to be redirected to ALL pages it edits? Edit: Even when pages aren't being edited by that IP, it still gives annon users the new message. It seems to re-occur every 20-30 seconds. Edit again: Seems to instead be based on viewing pages on the wiki. It doesn't occur when I refresh say the main page or RC's, but when I view random pages. Some do it, and some don't. Isk8Isk8 19:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Its now telling me i have new messages and redirecting me to ANYTHING. A minute ago, i had one redirect me to Special:Random.. Even when I'm logged in.. >.< --Warwick sig Warwick (Talk)/(Contr.) 23:19, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

I haven't personally seen any 'New messages' boxes apart from those caused on my own talk page. -- Gem (gem / talk) 23:27, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
I too am not getting the issues. Wonder if it only affects those that have logged-in after the proxy/cache server mis-configuration occurred (and anon contributors of course). Ie, I use the "remember me" option and so have not had to re-login to date since this started. Be interesting to find out if all those registered users that are having the problem have logged-in at some point since this all began. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 00:19, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
I tried logging out and then in again earlier but I still don't see the message. -- Gem (gem / talk) 00:37, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm, then it appears to be randomly effecting some but not all, probably due to Wikia having a server-farm of proxies and only some were changed before the error was realised. Wonder if browser cookies are used to remember "last known IP address used", and so only once those cookies expire (or are cleared by the user), though would think that could be open to abuse, so would hope not. Be nice if Wikia would use this page, being Wikia staff noticeboard and all, to post a formal status report. *hint hint* :) --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 00:47, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

New messages

It only shows up for me when I log out. Random pages will trigger the "new messages" prompt, and usually the first view of the main pages does as well. I have not seen it as a logged in user as of yet. Isk8Isk8 13:52, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Category:Candidates for deletion bug

currently, if pages are linking to certain un-made/deleted templates, they are candidates for deletion. This appears to be a bug, and because of that I am reporting it. --Warwick sig Warwick (Talk)/(Contr.) 19:27, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Just don't link to it, then. Cress Arvein(Talk) 20:37, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
It's an old MediaWiki issue: categorization via templates/transclusions don't immediately update when you alter the transcluded thing. Updating the transcluded categories is a passive task filed into the job queue so that the wiki doesn't just hang to the death when you edit a template that is used by a few hundred articles. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 17:53, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

NO, I want to see <item>s! NOTHING else!!

Previously this site had pictures of weapons or items but the characters were inappropriate. Some of them had no clothes on, carrying the items. I am sure some user thought that was <insert cliched reference to unconcionable graphic portrayal under the pretense of whim or liberality> but it was just wrong. I hope that the pictures, ANY that feature or should feature things other than the wielding characters show the items and IF they show the characters, that they are fully and appropriately dressed. Users come to the site wanting information about the game and such things are insulting to decent people. Please update the pictures appropriately among your other updates. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 146.187.187.247 (contribs) .

If you take a pic without a wielder, you have no idea how big it is and such, and that can make a big diffrence. Also, armor can disrupt the view of an item, by clipping through, covering it, all that stuff. --- VipermagiSig-- (s)talkpage 19:56, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
In terms of images showing the details of a particular item skin, the reason that images are typically taken with the characters clothing not showing, is the distraction effect. Showing the skin of an item on a neutral backing focuses all attention on the item, and not the characters armor. And the characters still have clothes on. Nothing in Guild Wars is "naked". There should be no reason to be bothered by the characters "under garments". Also please remember to sign your comments. (Edit conflict... grr Viper) --Aggro Isk8 Sk8 19:59, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
If you are really disturbed by the images, you can use the official Guild Wars Wiki since they are trying to get renders from ANet to replace all images. Render = the item without any background or character, taken with an external tool by an ANet staff member. -- Gem (gem / talk) 20:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Questionable Ad

[4]

It's an ad for a particular GW guild's website encouraging people to join them. Since GuildWiki does not endorse or support one guild over any others, it out to be blocked so we don't appear partial to them. Felix Omni Signature 06:44, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Imho people should know that we have no particular influence over what makes it through Google ads - we don't endorse or condone any of them. We can only request blocking for those which are obviously wrong or deceptive, like GW gold. But yeah, I see your point. I would stop short of blocking anything with "guild" in it, because things like GuildCafe are obviously okay, but...a single guild may be deceptive. Entropy Sig (T/C) 12:39, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Is hitting me repeatedly just trying to edit Aidan because of the external link on the bottom. Shouldn't it check for external links ADDED, not ones just plain in the text? --Gimmethegepgun 21:32, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

That's unfortunately how the extension works. anyways, I've added babyhold to MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. Any other admins can also edit the whitelist. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 01:34, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, why aren't we using the same extension as Wikipedia does? They have anons and newly-registered users at least have to pass a visual test if they ADD a new link, and seeing how pretty much every single page there HAS an external, but you don't need to do the test every time, I don't see what the problem is --Gimmethegepgun 17:27, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
There are two different checks. Unregistered anons are asked to pass a test whenever they add an external. Everyone are blocked from edits containing URLs that are blacklisted. If you go to Wikipedia and login and try adding the following link (I just tried on my own user page), you'll find you'll get the same block:
So, this proves we ARE using the same extension Wikipedia uses. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 17:53, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
