Interwiki link request

I'd like to request interwiki link with the PvXwki (http://www.pvxwiki.com) using the PvX: prefix, so that PvX:Main Page would like to PvXwiki's main page. -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 21:04, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I've added that to the Interwiki map but that's not currently in use on this wiki. I'll try to get this enabled here. Is it going to be a problem if w:whatever links point to the Central Wikia instead of to Wikipedia? Angela 12:44, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Nothing on GWiki links to Wikia, so that would be a problem unless all existing W:something links were converted as part of this change. Also it would take a bit of getting used to since W:X linkage is second nature here now; may want to make a Site Notice or whatever (T/C) 02:24, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

You're right. That's what it will do if it's set up. I was just wondering if applying the rest of Wikia's interwiki map here would cause problems since it includes w: to mean Wikia, whereas this wiki seems to use w: to mean Wikipedia. Angela 03:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Bad Coding?

I'm new to the wiki and have been trying to update the monster pictures. i was instructed by some helpful comunity members to replace the old images instead of adding a whole new one to the database. While this has worked for me usually, I've been having problems repalacing the old Modniir pictures. I have entered the replace file with updated version link and uploaded the appropriate picture from my computer. However, instead of uploading the image as I desired, it instead distorted the old image to the dimentions of my image and failed to load my new image. How can I go about fixing this without uploading entirely new files to the database?--Lord Twitchiopolis 01:59, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Odd Ads

Recently I saw an ad advertising http://www.mobularity.com. It was an annoying flashy ad saying "IS YOUR LOVE CHEATING ON YOU?," while flashing between hot pink and black. There is also an ad for Live-Giveaway.com, advertising a "free" Guild Wars Nightfall. Naturally, this seems suspect. I have just encountered an ad while viewing "Sunspears in Cantha." It was an ad for "www.GdpChina.com." It said it had 10 billion gold in stock. Gee, makes me want to know what kind of builds they use. :P Theta Republic 06:48, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Annoying Ad

Lately I have been seeing a particularly annoying advertisement popping up which I feel is both "Inappropriate" (flashing animation w/rainbow colors) and somewhat smutty as well. Its banner reads "Calculate the exact name of your lover!" or something to that effect, while two static cutouts "kiss" in the background. I can't get the target link for the ad, since it's made in Flash and thus a "Properties" isn't obtainable through a simple right-mouse click, and this sort of ad almost always leads to sites which could compromise your Internet security...not to mention the ad already hints at what sorts of top-quality content could be found there. It may not be explicitly pornographic, but I think this toes the line of acceptable/tasteful content. (T/C) 05:50, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Obscene annoying ad

Have you checked the link to FuryWiki? It is both obscene and annoying, and has nothing to do with game information. Legend Victoria

Questionable "sponsors" ad

On the sidebar, under "sponsors" noted an advert claiming to offer "Download Guild Wars", this caught my interest as ArenaNet would be the only source for downloading the GW client. The link has the claim "Stop paying for new games! One time fee to download for life", my concern is that this may either be a scam (pay them a fee just to to download the GW client), or an illegal software site (though, without a valid product key, don't think you'd get far). farming bot ads

One of the Ebay farming bot ads is sported right at the bottom of this page, as I'm typing this... It advertises 4 (random?) GW-related things offered on Ebay, 2 of which were farming bots. Type "guild wars" into an Ebay search and you will get a million hits, half of which will be bots. Nothing from Ebay should ever make it onto a wiki page, since Ebay is swarming with illegal bots and gold traders. In one of the reviews I saw a person complaining that they got permanently banned for using this particular bot, on a 2 year-old fully developed account. And I thought to myself "How naive did you have to be to buy a bot and not expect this to happen?" Too bad, he lost 2 years worth of play and over $100 worth of software for being greedy. The ads are randomly generated (the string of 12 numbers in the end), which means you will block one out of 10^12 permutations, which is wasted effort. And like I said, Ebays sells more bots than any other GW-related merchandise, so yes, block them ALL, or don't bother. RoseOfKali 03:06, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I thought that "farm", "farming", "run", "running", "gold", etc. were automatic red flags which caused ads to be blocked...we don't have to block all of Ebay unless their permutation program is advanced enough to do stuff like "Sell B0T for GW" (with a zero). (T/C) 04:56, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

And this is coming from a person who got offended by a "Love Button" ad. :P (No offense, just find it funny ^_^). I thought that you block the address of the ad, which just says "blablablaebayblablasomenumbers" and has none of those flag words in it. Or does the blocking software analyze the ad's content? That would be too advanced for a free website. All in all, I will repeat myself again: Ebay has hundreds of, dare I stress, illegal bots up for sale as soon as you type "guild wars" in the search. It should not be anywhere near a wiki site that supposedly promotes honest gaming. It's not even about honesty as much as it is about the fact that any player will get banned for using one, thus, a wiki should not provide a direct link to such things. I remember reading that Wikia blocks any ad that contains "gold" in some form or other. I don't think it's possible through image scanning or anything, but for any sort of text or code it would be easily checked...meh. Also, I'm not sure that we should be responsible for players' actions. It's obvious that our ads aren't things that we support or endorse. If someone was dumb enough to use an illegal bot advertised through EBay, that is their stupid decision and they deserve to be banned for it. If they claimed "well I saw an ad on Gwiki!" then that is a lame excuse...

Still, considering how strongly we police the gold ads, I guess you have a point. It is to some extent our responsibility to promote positive GW stuff. Also, I just noticed that the links I provided only lead you to the thumbnail image that was displayed next to the sale items list, so the ad is not a single banner, it's a combo of several "frames" or whatever you want to call them. I would have given you all the links had I noticed this earlier. My bad. My argument is still correct, though. Wiki should not provide a link to a site that is swarming with illegal bots. Yes, we block ads with the word "gold" (although the people writing the ads do all they can to bypass such filters of course!). I've mailed the guy that looks after our ads, and asked for a block on ebay or, if he thinks it is worth trying, a block on "bots", "farm" and "farming". Again here, I have to ask if this is considered offensive by the majority here? We are happy to block anything that offends the majority of wiki users, or violates the rules of the game, but obviously we can't account for every taste, or we would never have ads at all. Actually, this ad had nothing to do with sex or explicit images. All it did was trick you into thinking it will give you your "true love's" name, while gathering a bunch of your information for sale. True, but wiki is not responsible for police-ing people who can't recognize a phish, whether in E-mail or on a site. That should be common sense to any internet user. Agreed. I just find things like this sort of "benign" anymore. The worst it could do is spam your E-mail inbox or wake you up at 8am with a sale call if you're silly enough to give a phone #. Explicit content is always offensive, though. As well as it really sux to get banned permanently.

It apeared when i clicked on a link, but when i typed in http://gw.gamewikis.org i got the same error, as if the server couldn't handel my request. when i tried again a few minutes later everything was back to normal. I used IE7 when i got this error, didn't try it with FF becouse i don't think its a browser isue.Pul 19:49, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks all.. these have all been reported. It's annoying, because they are all from Google, who were specifically working with us to block gold ads. Possibly the problem is that they don't actually have text to filter out, they are images. But either way, we don't want them of course! I've asked our guy who deals with the ads about this. Cross Site Scripting, unkonown if bug

I use wikiswitch to switch wikis, If I'm editing a page and hit the switch button, the firefox extention noscript comes up and states that it blocked a cross site scripting issue from gw.gamewikis.org, anything that we can do to change this issue? Cool, had a chat with some of the Wikia support guys on their IRC server (hope no-one minds me trying to escalate this), for the technically inclined as far as I can deduce, the problem apparently is that the cache/proxy server (Squid) had a configuration change that caused external Internet IPs to appear as an internal address to the wiki server(s). This in turn confused the heck out of the software as probably was seeing different users on the same IP address (just on different ports), which likely explains why when User talk:10.10.20.183 is updated, multiple users get notified of a new message. So in other words, issue is still present and escalating. Is that 10.x.x.x IP causing annon users to be redirected to ALL pages it edits? Edit: Even when pages aren't being edited by that IP, it still gives annon users the new message. It seems to re-occur every 20-30 seconds. Edit again: Seems to instead be based on viewing pages on the wiki. It doesn't occur when I refresh say the main page or RC's, but when I view random pages. Some do it, and some don't. I too am not getting the issues. Wonder if it only affects those that have logged-in after the proxy/cache server mis-configuration occurred (and anon contributors of course). Ie, I use the "remember me" option and so have not had to re-login to date since this started. Hmmm, then it appears to be randomly effecting some but not all, probably due to Wikia having a server-farm of proxies and only some were changed before the error was realised. Wonder if browser cookies are used to remember "last known IP address used", and so only once those cookies expire (or are cleared by the user), though would think that could be open to abuse, so would hope not. It's an old MediaWiki issue: categorization via templates/transclusions don't immediately update when you alter the transcluded thing. Previously this site had pictures of weapons or items but the characters were inappropriate. Some of them had no clothes on, carrying the items. I am sure some user thought that was <insert cliched reference to unconcionable graphic portrayal under the pretense of whim or liberality> but it was just wrong. I hope that the pictures, ANY that feature or should feature things other than the wielding characters show the items and IF they show the characters, that they are fully and appropriately dressed. Users come to the site wanting information about the game and such things are insulting to decent people. In terms of images showing the details of a particular item skin, the reason that images are typically taken with the characters clothing not showing, is the distraction effect. Showing the skin of an item on a neutral backing focuses all attention on the item, and not the characters armor. And the characters still have clothes on. Nothing in Guild Wars is "naked". Severe Wiki Lag + Socket Errors

Ok, for some reason, over the last 10 or so minutes I've experienced severe lag and at least 10 "socket errors." Has anything changed with the wikia servers recently? Also, to other users, has anyone else experienced this? There are two different checks. Unregistered anons are asked to pass a test whenever they add an external. Everyone are blocked from edits containing URLs that are blacklisted. If you go to Wikipedia and login and try adding the following link (I just tried on my own user page), you'll find you'll get the same block:

The namespace can be removed from the Wantedpages server-side, but as far as I know, it's quite risky and would need updating each time there is a significant update to the software. Templates wouldn't work here (as far as I know) - it worked on GWW because all the red links came from the alliance nav templates, so certain people found a way to get rid of red links if the page wasn't created. Our Wantedpages works again :D

Site loading error

About half of the time that I attempt to load guildwiki, it causes my browser to freeze. This isn't my Browser, as I've tried it in FF and IE as well. Its not my computer either, because I've tried it on my other computer, which is decent, and even that one freezes. Stupidly long loading time

On each page, its taking about 5 minutes to load each page, which is pretty much unacceptable. And the cause of it is the ads.. My .js takes at least 1 minute to load for each page. I'm in the middle of typing somthing, and suddenly the screen will shoot up because of my extra links. I'm going to test the monaco skin, and I'm pretty sure there arn't these problems on the monaco? game updates

Maby someone added a message between the opening of the page and opening of the edit page? In that case you wouldn't see the message on the discussion page since itwasn't there when you loaded it, and then after you hit the link to the edit page the edit window shows the message since it has been added at that point. If you then hit the back button in the browser to move to the talk page in normal mode, the browser will show the version that it loaded previously, not the up to date version. Actually, I bet you were just confused by the modular nature of the game updates article. Each individual update is its own article, and they are all "included" onto the overall Game updates page. Each update has its own talk page, as does the overall page. deleted pages

is it a new thing that deleted pages are getting their entire history removed from recent changes? I know that it gets removed from a person's list of contributions but removing it from RC makes it annoying to go back and figure out who made it after it was deleted if I wanted to ban them or something. If you "recreate" the page (going to the Edit) it shows a small link which shows deleted versions. There, you can see who edited it last, and thus who made it. --- -- (s)talkpage 17:52, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

The easiest way to prevent pages from being created is to use cascading protection. Create a page with links to page names that you want protected from creation, then protect that page with cascading protection (it's a check box on the protect page screen). Steward

With the Wikia Migration, Entropy's Bcrat powers have decreased a tad, and she can't desysop anyone. Errors

A lot of the time I go onto GuildWiki (but not all the time) my Firebug error tracker repeatedly picks up this error:

Also sometimes I'm given another urchinTracker error with something along the lines of this (different green lines denote different error messages):

It also sometimes catches a div tag in the green part. Also, Firebug will not work at the moment, and the first bug on the huge list (which has been stacking up each time I change pages) is:

Special:Wantedpages

Some pages seem to be showing up in here more than once, and the extra copies say they have different numbers of links to them. But they both link to the same whatlinkshere page, with the same links. More than likely it's due to transclusions, and the fact that the wiki engine deals with refreshing link counts (among other things) only when an article gets edited. When a source article is created with a link to a certain article, say "Article A", that adds 1 to Article A's link count. When another article is created that transcludes the first article, then Article A's link count is again increased by 1. However, there's still only 1 actual link to Article A, and it exists on the transcluded article. When the transcluded article gets edited to change the link, Article A's link count is decreased by 1. The count that the transcluding article added for Article A will not be removed until that article gets edited again. The system cache definitely needs to be purged if we've got incorrect link counts for articles that were deleted a year ago. —Dr Ishmael 04:08, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Spam filter - false positives

There are a number of pages being blocked by the spam filter for no apparent reason. The common thread seems to be pagenames that end with a trailing slash. These are the pages that I have seen blocked:

See this. It doesn't seem to want to show anything past the 1000th page. Even though there's definitely at least one uncategorized page with a title starting with a letter after M. That is a common occurrence on most similar Specialpages, I've noticed. See User:Dr ishmael/todo - Special:Longpages, Special:Shortpages, Special:Uncategorizedimages, Special:Uncategorizedtemplates, Special:Wantedpages, and Special:Lonelypages are all ones I remember that do that. Last time I asked about this one, I was told "it's a feature, not a bug" ;) The idea is that users fix the problems in the first 1000 or so, and others move up the list to be fixed. For ones like Wantedpages, Longpages, or Shortpages, I can understand that, since they are sorted by number of links or page length, and in those cases this "feature" makes sense - a redlink that appears 200 times needs to be fixed much more than one that only appears 2 times. The Uncategorized and Unused lists, though, don't have a set ordering scheme (they seem to be mostly alphabetical or by creation date, but not entirely), so in those cases I'd have to call this a "bug". —Dr Ishmael 16:07, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

The reasoning is, that all those pages are provided to help people fix the issues on them. So showing 1000 is plenty for people to work on, selecting each and adding a category, or linking the image... and once those are done, the next 1000 will be visible -- sannse (talk) 21:02, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

One reason for this being useful is that you might have a list of pages from some other source (say, all pages that start with "Game update") and want to find out which of these are also uncategorized = find which pages are on both lists (which AWB can do for you, I believe). Actually, that's not what the correct behavior should be. Perhaps using an offset of one decillion wasn't the best example. Look at the deletion log with an offset of 10000 and with an offset of 10500. They show the exact same entries. But go to the bottom of the page and look at the date of the last entry - July 9th, 2007. The builds wipe was in May of 2007, so there should be entries in the log after that, but you can click "next 500" forever and it will never get to them, it'll just keep showing the same 500. Those entries are still in the log - if you search for a specific user you can see them, and you can probably see them if you search for a specific page, but you can't see them without specifying a user or an article. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 21:17, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Bot posts triggering new messages notice

We have found that if a bot posts on a user's talk page, it does not seem to trigger the new messages notice. I have found no information indicating that this is normal behavior. The only special feature of a bot is that its edits do not show up in recent changes by default because of their flag. We would like to use bots to leave important notices on user's talk pages and if the bot doesn't trigger the new messages notice, they won't know about it. Is this a bug or some setting that can be changed? We are discussing it primarily in relation to GuildWiki:Bot tasks/License reminder but I bet we will have other reasons to perform similar tasks in the future. —♥Jedi♥Rogue♥ 18:28, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Heya! The reason that the bot is not triggering notification messages is because it is marking the changes as minor changes. By default, users to not receive notification of bot edits marked as minor edits. Try leaving the messages as non-minor edits and see if notification works properly. Since I obviously worded my idea badly, I clarify: I want wikia to pop up a warning (similar to the tinyurl warning) for all URLs it classifies as spam, instead of blocking them. I'll pass the feedback along to our product guys. I suspect that we don't do that because that really doesn't prevent the spam from appearing ... spammers and their bots interpret the post as a success and keep chugging along. Sometime recently the format of Special:Editcount was changed to be a new table. Out of curiousity, I wonder when that occurred. Out of concern, the font is very small and hard to read. Yes, and I am also getting a weird effect where the Monaco-specific (at least, I thought it was Monaco-specific) "link suggest" was somehow trying to work on Monobook and dynamically updating a div below the edit box. Turning on "Do not show link suggest" in my editing preferences fixed the latter, but I can't figure out a way to fix the double-toolbar problem. —Dr Ishmael 05:06, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Both issues appear to be related to the fix that was implemented for the IE script errors. Link Suggest isn't actually a Monaco-only feature, it was just never implemented in GuildWiki's special version of Monobook. Ad bug

Second ad in page body on long page

The Championship Trophy page has a google ad at the top and another one down at the Wintersday Tournament Trophy, which totally messes up the layout there (I have a screenshot, but I'm not logged in atm). On longer pages, there is a second ad at the bottom of the page (and occasionally one below the fold on the sidebar). The second ad can be either a box ad or a banner. If it's a box ad, it appears after the last section header. If it is a banner, it will appear below the content. The collision detection should, however, prevent page-breakage ... on that page, it should have created a banner instead of a box. Yeah, I saw the box too ... that shouldn't be happening because of the "This trophy is no longer on display." box which conflicts with it. I'll check to see why that is happening. We added the dummy section header based on community feedback--to make it clear that the advertisement is separate from the rest of the content. Is that not preferable? load time

Load time for pages and saving pages is agonizingly slow lately. Especially at night. Its frustrating enough that I'm tempted to switch over to the other wiki when I need info while doing missions in PvE. And if I'm having issues, so must other users. I've been getting that too, as well as a lot of "Database locked" errors for the slaves to catch up to the master. Yeah, page moves are rate restricted because they're the most difficult to clean up due to vandalism. It looks like the default limit is 2 moves in 5 minutes. Users with the sysop or rollback flag appear to be exempt from the rate limit, so if you have someone who needs to move a large number of pages, it may be a good idea to grant them the rollback flag. --KyleH (talk) 22:20, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Log in form bug

In IE6, the login form does not display for me. I've tried changing my IE security settings every which way, but nothing seems to work. "Keep me logged in on this computer"

Doesn't work quite right. This has been the case since a while before the skin change. I use primarily IE7, but it also happens in Firefox. guildwars.wikia is set as my homepage, and whenever I first open a page, it opens Main and shows me as not logged in. It works fine for me, FF 2 user. I have my "homepage" as the tabs opened at shutting down, so it shows exactly where I left off, including being logged on. I used to have this problem long before the skin upgrade. Home page set to main page, and I would always appear as not logged in when opening firefox, until I tried to go to another page, then yes, magically logged in. Here's how it works: Wikia tells your browser (IE/FF/whatever) to remember your username and your (encrypted) password. They're called cookies and they expire at a moment wikia tells your browser. Right now that date is set to one month in the future, so every month you have to log in by typing in your username and password, becouse your cookie was destroyed by your browser. For me, this is working just the way it should (use ff1). -{[ PUL ]}- 09:13, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

No, the way it is supposed to work is for the cookie expiration to get extended when you log in before the month is up. Anyway, wikia has set some cookies for .wikia.com and some for guildwars.wikia.com, and especially the __utm? cookies appear in both, so it may depend on which of these cookies get set first and by whom. I usually open the wiki through the search bar, so I assume that makes the cookies be set in the correct order. The order may vary as the skin loads content from wikia and guildwiki, and some of that is even loaded by Javascript, so processor load may be a factor here. Untangling the cookies (i.e. using non-conflicting names) might solve the issue. If I was Derik, I'd add "Wikia suck" and point to their technicians being fine with HTML errors. --◄mendel► 09:32, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Got the error myself (twice), now. I have __utma and __UTMZ for both host guildwars.wikia.com and domain .guildwars.wikia.com , and they're different. The domain cookies are new. I have just these two domain cookies for help.wiki.com and other wikis (even guildwars.com and guildwars.incgamers.com). wikia.com now has __utmz for both domain.wikia.com and host www.wikia.com . I say we wait at least a few hours to make sure the fix is permanent and stable (i.e. Wikia doesn't have to back out the change because they discover that it introduced an even more serious bug). When added a new section, you put in the name of the new section in a separate feield. that field is called "Subject/headline" The words subject/headline are above and centered over that box and between them are links to edit summery and stuff. this doesn't seem like the right place for this label. It should be in front of or at least directly above and left justified over that box. Sorry about that all, we are trying out an extension that fixes the problem of the URL showing as the redirected page rather than the target page. It seems to be working well on the wikis it's been tried on, but isn't ready for general release yet. Not least because, as you saw, the redirect text doesn't show on Monobook. I'm in the process of setting one up now :) We have a way to send talk page messages out to everyone, but that's generally a bit over the top for most changes. We use the Wikia mailing list or Central Forums at times, but again not ideal - most people don't see them. We try to visit key wikis to leave info on community pages, but that's not easy to do as we grow. And all in all there are many places, none of them good.

So my idea is to add a newsletter that's automatically updated on all wikis at Wikia, probably at Project:Wikia Newsletter. It will look something like this (that's just a first draft though) and will hopefully mean a lot better communication over all wikis. I'm getting some first feedback on the idea and how I've laid it out, then I'll trial it on a few wikis. Then... we'll see how it goes! -- sannse (talk) 19:36, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

HTML errors

The page Template:Valid_XHTML_1.0 was valid when I wrote it. It no longer is.

Even on Monobook I get 27 errors, many of those on lines that have wikia-ads.wikia.com on them. Could you pass a hint to your web designers that URLencoding URLs is a good thing?

The Database dump is missing information

The database dump at http://wikistats.wikia.com/dbdumps/gwguild/pages_current.xml.gz is incomplete. Several articles lack article text that is in the online database. This hurts us because I have been running scripts to find pages that are eligible for some maintenance tasks, and of course the dump can't serve its intended function.

The latest current_pages.xml.gz of 21 August is still unusable because of the same problem. I believe it omits the text (just the text, revision info & comments are there) of every page that's been edited after July 23rd or thereabouts. This is really disappointing, as there are a few projects that could really use the updated page lists that I create by running simple programs on the dump - and for article groups that have 5000+ pages, like our bestiary, doing it online is just not feasible. --◄mendel► 00:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Unable to edit pages

I'm not sure what was changed, but the page editing function seems to no longer work. Obviously, this is a very bad thing for a wiki. Clicking either "Save page" or "Show preview" shows a completely blank page as the preview, no matter what my edit was. It did this yesterday, too, and I didn't try to make any edits in the few days preceding yesterday. I've tried rebooting the computer, as well as clearing my cache and restarting my browser. Neither seemed to have any effect. I normally use Opera 9.51. I had to switch to a different browser to make this edit, which is quite a nuisance.

On another note, after logging in, it would be nice if pop-up box to log in closed on its own. Instead, it just sits there covering part of the screen after I log in. I have to close the box on my own and then reload the page for it to show me as logged in. Quizzical 14:47, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Update on login problems

Hi all, just an update on last week's login problems. It seems that the issue was with the cache, the way the server sends stored page to your browser to save on database effort. The problem was, it was sending pages that showed you as logged out - even though you were actually logged in. That's why there were some strange effects with edits showing as logged in when your browser didn't agree.

It took a while to work out why this was happening, but we think that should be cleared up now. I'm still seeing a problem that I have to log in when I come back to Wikia... but while I'm on the site it's stable.

There is still a problem with Opera, which is likely to be related but is harder to pin down. Sorry about this all you Opera users.

Question Regarding Widgets

Not sure if this is where I should be asking this, but I can't figure out any better place :P. Getting good use out of the widget tools that have been put in place, but there is a major annoyance regarding the watchlist widget. It doesn't show new watchlist pages as bolded like in your regular watchlist. This makes the tool pretty much useless. Poorly formatted ad

Bad ad, no supper!

An anonymous user edited a page because, "Dropping down content because ad is showing up on top :(" [11] I checked on this, and found a box-style add that is indeed being displayed as if it were a banner ad, and thus is overflowing its assigned box and covering up article content. —Dr Ishmael 01:15, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Image revision deletion

For obvious reasons, I tried to delete a certain vandalism revision on Image:Rank 15.jpg, but it gave me this message when I tried:

There is no archived version of Rank 15.jpg with the specified attributes.

The changes that we made to speed up the site caused Opera to break, so we had to revert them. Overall, performance should still be fine, but you may (infrequently) notice some glitches. HTML errors: situation much improved

I saw the HTML error topic has been archived, so I checked the current situation. A lot of errors, especially those with the ad code, have been fixed, with the result that monaco is down to 20 errors (11 errors are that an id starts with a digit), and monobook validates with 0 errors again. printing pages with Monaco = fail

I can't see a link to print a page on the Monaco sidebar, and even if there is one, it wouldn't work, because the wikia ad spotlight images appear in the upper left corner, obscuring the page. Here's a screenshot. --◄mendel► 10:16, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

The "printable version" link was removed because all modern browsers (IE 5+, Firefox, Opera 7+, etc.) automatically apply the print stylesheet whenever you print, making the extra link mostly redundant. Ok, the FF3 "regular" Monaco print preview of our main page shows me a white banner-sized box overlaying the table, and a wikia spotlight in the lower left corner of the page; for wiki pages that take more than two printed pages, the spotlight is still in the lower left corner, obscuring the text there. The print preview of the "printable" version doesn't have the white box, but now the spotlight is in the upper left corner and obscures the page title. --◄mendel► 22:16, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

So, from out of the blue, there's a box around the Categories and Recent Changes stuff, inscreasing their size by a bit more. I have set my prefs to show 75 changes on RC, and I see only 24 (one less than one/third). Sure, without the box it isn't 75, but there's quite some more. And it looks out of place on Monobook, imo, but I'm a conservatist so I generally dislike sudden changes which don't seem to improve anything.
The category box looks a bit weird now. It's a box, and inside is another, smaller box (what did you expect, a bigger one?), and in there are the categories. Why these sudden changes? Internal Error?

This occured to me a little while ago, trying to respond on M.mendel's talk page. Can anyone explain what just exploded? --- -- (s)talkpage 14:44, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

If you give the time & date when this occurred, it can help the operators determine where the php error listed at the top occurred. A computer program consists of little parts that use each other, and the part at the bottom (Main) uses the one above, and that uses the one above it, until 11 layers deep an error occurs. Knowing who was using what when the error occurs helps determine the nature of the problem. Next time somthing like this happens, copy and paste the whole diagnostic message (basically, everything in artcile space, but you can do a text copy & paste), note the server time (go by RC if you have to) and the page you were editing, and post it to central wikia's help forum or the freenode #wikia support chat. --◄mendel► 15:56, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

If it looks like it's a widespread problem (eg. the entire site is inaccessible), then the fact that you're able to post again serves as a pretty good indication that the problem has been noticed and fixed. IRC is good in situations like that given that you can report them in real-time. There is also a Wikia channel on Skype that you can join if you're interested (it's much less active than IRC, but most of us live on Skype. So, I'm not saying that you should avoid posting about these hiccups (especially if you need to vent your frustrations), but unless it's a prolonged issue, or one that only happens intermittently, it's pretty safe to assume that we already know about it by the time you're able to post again. --KyleH (talk) 22:46, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

The message should have self-destructed ... is your new message notification gone now? We're working on a more public way to notify users of upcoming changes. Right now we post to the wikia-l mailing list, add messages on the forum on central Wikia, and occasionally send a special talk page message (usually targeted at admins so that they can relay the message using normal channels because we often get a lot of confused responses when we send one to everyone). May I suggest something? Just make a big list for each wiki what page to add stuff to, and then add a comment to that page when you have news (for newsletters, you can just say "The new newsletter is out" and list the headlines). The technically most elegant way to manage this would be to use a MediaWiki:Newsletter page that redirects to the page in question, the default would be the mainpage talk (remember the mainpage may have been changed by the wiki), and we would be able to set it to this noticeboard, for example. --◄mendel► 23:05, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Image Upload - Internal Error

My apologies if this is just me doing something incorrectly, but I'm trying to update some of the missing pictures on the Ranger Elite Sunspear armor page. The first time I attempted to upload an image I got this error:

Internal error Could not rename file "/tmp/phpC2ze4M" to "public/9/91/Ranger_Elite_Sunspear_Armor_M_gray_head_side.jpg".

So I tried a second time and then got this error:

Internal error Could not rename file "public/9/91/Ranger_Elite_Sunspear_Armor_M_gray_head_side.jpg" to "public/archive/9/91/20080925200045!Ranger_Elite_Sunspear_Armor_M_gray_head_side.jpg".

Dr Ishmael, it's been mention on the #wikia irc channel that they've been pushing new code, so I tried the test poll I had set up in my sandbox and it worked (it hadn't before). That made me assume that the new code was live. If it is, and if old polls work (somewhat), then the vote registration works now, but the creating of polls is somehow broken? or maybe they need the proper age before they work? --◄mendel► 18:55, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

What happened before they broke completely was I'd click an option and the page would reload (no vote); I'd click again and the page would reload, and the vote would register. Now it just says "Please wait, registering your vote" and reloads the page each time, with it not counting. Hi! I just got word that the new poll extension is ready, so I have enabled it out on GuildWiki. On some pages, you may need to purge the page (append "?action=purge" to the address) in order to get the poll to render correctly the first time. Give it a shot, and let me know if you notice any oddities (other than the extension doesn't truncate the percentages to a reasonable number of significant digits). The new search box is a stepback because the removal of the "Search GuildWiki" text is not guaranteed. It can occur that the text remains in the field while clicking on it forcing you to first mark the whole text and then deleting it before you can enter the search text. This error happens in mozilla-based browsers (the others not tested) and can possibly be fixed by using the "onmousedown" instead of the "onmouseup" event handler within the js-file. Even though the error appears very rarely a removal of the text would be a better option than the status quo, the fixing would be the best. 77.182.224.91 13:46, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

menu bug

the side menu has a strange bug on the submenus: for both news and support we have a link that says "edit this menu". HTML div tags appear around this and I'm pretty sure they don't belong there. I'm sure when this started however. —♥Jedi♥Rogue♥ 19:13, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

The "edit this menu" item has always been around since the beginning of Monaco skin, however, recently it starts to treat html tags as pure text, causing my hack to float special stuff to the right to fail as described above. A long time ago I had suggested that those special menu items ("more..." and "edit this menu") to be given special classes so wiki admins can CSS-style them differently , unfortunately that does not seem to have been implemented yet )-: -User:PanSola (talk to the ) 22:31, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Ideally I'd want to format the DIV outside the anchor, since A is an in-line element. not uploading .bmp files

"Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, ico, ogg, pdf, xcf, svg, mid, jl, odt, ods, odp, odg, odc, odf, odi, odm." on the ipload page suggests that there is a technical barrier to uploading other file types, but just now a user has uploaded .bmp images. This is very odd, because even on Special:Version it doesn't list bmp as an allowed extension, and I am getting the ".bmp" is not a permitted file type warning when I try uploading one, even with "Ignore any warnings" checked. Problem with using the "Back" button of Opera

I'm having a quite annoying bug with the new skin: when i want to go back, i have to press the back button 4 times before i really go back. this is caused by the Ads at the bottom of each page: everytime i click back, one of the ads disappears, only when they're all gone the browser goes back to the last page.

This only happens in Opera, tested it with both Safari and IE and had no problems.

*update* ok, it's getting worse... now it ranges from 5 times up to 9 times!

also, the page sometimes keeps loading something, but i can live with a sandclock next to my mousepointer.

Uploading OpenOffice 2.4 .odt file impossible

I want to upload an OpenOffice.org 2.4 text file (extension .odt), but I get this error: The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and upload again. The file is neither. I have uploaded files like this before. What gives? --◄mendel► 02:12, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Signature edit conflicts

These days I often get an edit conflict with myself. The "old" version is my post with ~~~~ at the end, and the "new" version is my post with the signature on it (ie. after it changes the tildes into my signature, timestamp, etc.) It is amusing the first time or so, but now it's just annoying. undeleting

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: 
/*id=20081021152242*/ (SQL query hidden)
from within function "ExternalStorageUpdate::doUpdate". MySQL returned error "1062: Duplicate entry '26-165466' for key 1 (10.8.2.200)".
