The Semantic MediaWiki is an extension currently undergoing testing on Wikia, and I think it can be useful on GuildWiki. The testing site on Wikia's installation of SMW is here. Official documentation of SMW can be found here. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:01, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

As long as it works with wikied, it's probably fine RT | Talk 22:04, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
What I mean by that is, I don't realy understand the document, but if it works with my editor extention (Called wikied) it's probably fine RT | Talk 22:05, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Admittedly only had a brief read through some of the features / examples, but agree that some of those features could be very handy for GuildWiki. One question-mark though, what sort of impact is it likely to have on the servers, infrastructure etc? Ie, all that additional syntax structuring etc will surely come at some extra server resources usage cost? Will Wikia accommodate that? --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 03:40, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Semantic MediaWiki, if I am not mistaken, is MUCH better than DPL at performing similar tasks (which is currently deployed on standard Wikia installations, and we'll probably get DPL once we upgrade to 1.12). Wikia is currently testing it, which means looking for bugs or any subtle corner cases of huge resource drain, and if it passes the tests, then it will be available to all Wikia wikis (may not necessarily be automatically on by default). I believe it would be generally desirable in terms of resource consumption to convert any applicable usage of DPL into Semantic MediaWiki. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 07:43, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Ahhh, very cool. Anything that can enhance performance is a good thing, and if it can give us some neat new features as part of the bargin, all the better! --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 23:13, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
At first glance, I thought this was called "Semitic MediaWiki." I was nearly horrified. Felix Omni Signature 23:16, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Some answers from the developers:
  • SMW can indeed be used in many ways – be creative! (In the gaming context, e.g., you could realise DB like functions as offered by http://thottbot.com/ as part of the wiki, while still having normal wiki pages; you can also make something like a wiki-based blog or a multi-lingual documentation (scroll down for other languages))
  • Performace impact of advanced queries depends on the query and data; Wikia might configure SMW to allow only queries of limited complexity to prevent server overload
  • Compatibility with other extensions is important to us, please report any problems and we will try to fix them (see http://semantic-mediawiki.org on how to report bugs/wishes and where to get support)
  • The extended syntax can be hidden in templates, if desired (I think http://discoursedb.org is a good example for that)
