A Hex is "A spell that causes a negative effect for a period of time (e.g., movement/attack speed reduction, Health or Energy degeneration)." [1]

Some Hexes can reduce an enemy's armor, their energy regeneration or their movement speed while the Hex is in effect; other hexes will inflict damage on on an enemy if they do certain acts, like Empathy that damages those who attack; and some hexes simply cause damage, like Wastrel's Worry.

Many hexes are available to Mesmers and Necromancers and a few are available to Elementalists, Assassins, Ritualists and Monks.

When an ally has a Hex cast on them a purple down arrow will appear on their health bar in the party window. If the player suffers health degeneration as a result of a Hex, then his entire health bar will turn purple and begin to decrease.
