Notes

  • Ineptitude is possibly one of the most hilarious and effective skills to use on enemies in PvP. Since most Warrior and Ranger foes view Mesmers as easy targets that are primarily anti-caster, it is easy to catch an attacker off guard. Ineptitude is particularly good to use if you know the enemy has just finished a Preparation or has built up a lot of Adrenaline to use in a series of powerful attacks, especially if that enemy uses frenzy.
  • Ineptitude can be brutal, if not lethal, when combined with Clumsiness or Arcane Echo. Stringing together these interrupts on a foe who is not paying attention to the status bar, or on one who is unfamiliar with the spells' effects, can lead to huge amounts of damage within a 15 second timeframe. This will outright kill some attackers, while forcing others to heal, run, or drastically rethink their strategy. Thanks to the relatively low cooldown on Ineptitude, feel free to use it as a finisher on any target that is low on HP and is currently attacking you or an ally.
  • Ineptitude can be combined with Epidemic to blind several foes.
  • Unlike Clumsiness, Ineptitude doesn't interrupt (nor makes fail) the attack. However, the damage and the blindness are triggered by the attack and before the hit, so most of the time, the attack that triggered Ineptitude will still miss.
  • Due to its Blinding effect and its low cooldown, Ineptitude is a great skill for saving party members, especially casters. Although this spell can be used to aid Warriors or other tanks on your team, it is best used to stall/blind enemies who are attacking support casters who cannot (or choose not to) fight back, like healing Monks. Often, enemies will be so focused on killing Monks and other casters that they do not realize or care that they are Blind, or that they have taken hundreds of damage to a combination of Ineptitude and Clumsiness.
  • However, though it may be good in the 4v4 arena, its worth severely declines in high ranked 8v8. It can stop a warrior from unleashing his high-damage skills if done by surprise, but the blindness will be removed upon its application. Most warriors will wait out the blindness, and few will attack through the hex if they see that it is on them. This makes it a reasonably worthwhile skill, but most other Mesmer elites are more worthwhile.
  • Recently, this skill has been changed so that it no longer affects the same attack as Clumsiness. Clumsiness triggers a fraction of a second before the attack action would be completed, while Ineptitude triggers at the end of the attack action, which means that if a foe is hexed with both, Clumsiness will trigger on the first attack and Ineptitude will trigger on the second.
