Phantom
Phantom
Classification
Species: Phantom
Profession: Mesmer Mesmer-icon
Level(s): 24

Description

Phantoms have the look of partially translucent giant squids floating through the air. They roam portions of the Ring of Fire Islands in small groups but sometimes also appear solitary out of thin air. When defeated they vanish into nothing, without leaving a corpse behind. They are not very strong in combat, at least not with dealing or receiving a lot of damage, but their ability to blind and interrupt can become very annoying.

Notes

If at all possible, don't use any more spells than you absolutely must around them, as they have reflexes which can only be described as "disgusting." For example, Cry of Frustration, a Mesmer spell, has a base cast time of 0.25 seconds, and with a Mesmer's Fast Casting that can be reduced to as little as 0.16 seconds or even less. However, Phantoms are able to consistently interrupt even spells with such a staggeringly low cast time; longer spells like Orison of Healing or Reversal of Fortune are even more vulnerable.

If you will be using spells, know that no spell will go uninterrupted. This means that if there is one Phantom, then the first two spells used by anyone in its range will be interrupted (one by Cry of Frustration and one by Power Leak). There is no escaping that. This can be used to your advantage. Cast meaningless spells first (an attunement spell or a cheap spell perhaps) and save the important spells for later. Unfortunately, if you attack a pack of five phantoms, this means that the first 10 attempts to cast will result in a near certain failure.

Try to avoid clumping casters together so that Cry of Frustration only interrupts the victim and nothing more.
