Questions about the GW store upgrade.

1. GW tells me that if I buy a skill unlock pack, I'll be able to buy any NON-ELITE skill from a skill trainer in GW. What about Elite Tomes? Usually with an elite tome, you can buy any skill with a character that you previously unlocked with another character. Will I be able to buy the elite skills in roleplay mode using an Elite Tome if I unlocked them ONLY via the skill pack?

Yes, these packs are simply PvP unlocks. Ever since elite tomes were added you could use them to unlock any elite that you unlocked in PvP.

2. Lets say I bought all the skill packs, the item unlock pack, and own all 4 regular campaigns (and if it makes a difference, I also own GOTN and Collector's edition upgrades). Do I stand _anything_ to gain from buying the PvP access kit, or will EVERYTHING the kit would possibly offer me is already offered by my other purchases?

You would gain absolutely nothing by getting the PvP kit. DKS01 13:30, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

-

3. You play AB, RA, TA, and CM to get enough balth faction to unlock all of that on your own. >.> doesn't take long, through sheer AB'ing I've gotten enough balth faction to unlock every single non-elite skill, all mod/inscriptions, and runes. And as for elite skills, just go skill capping? Get 4 titles and all the elites unlocked for your account, then you have no need for these "packs".76.174.13.77 11:38, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for preaching me on what to do without actually answering my questions :/ You must work as a consultant.
A pretty bad one at that. A good consultant would encourage you to spend money on things like this, and of course, on consultants.  ;) --68.187.144.197 20:52, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
The argument I make is, how long have you played GW to get that far. If you work for less than an hour, you'll get the money easily. So the people who play insead of work get short chagned. This argument can be used either way. But consider it. RT | Talk 19:05, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Product Distribution Failed (Code 1751126)

Did anyone get this problem when trying to buy stuff from the GW store? I got it today when I try to buy anything, and just a few days ago it was working fine.

I had this same exact problem.

yeah, so did I. ----Warwick (Talk) (Contr.) 17:19, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
I did some digging around on the net and found out that many people have this problem (including me) and that ANet has been notified. hopefully they fix it soon. -Blaster 68.142.45.135 17:57, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Undocumented change

when you ping a condition, hex, refrain, enchantment it no longer says "I have xxx on me". It says "I am suffering from the yyy hex, listening to the zzz refrain, I'm enchanted with æææ." I've had this on my mind for a while and I'm satisfied with the more realistic pinging. Someone please make a note on this Seb2net 18:15, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Bring Back Mob Farming?

Now with the /report command don't you think itd be better for the GW community to bring back mob farming? I mean with Augry Rock and Granite Citadel filled up again, and with the people that are normally there (runners, farmers, normal people) they most likely will report the bots now that you dont have to go online and do the whole support thing (I know this post is late, but the thought just popped in my head) Shogankiller 18:32, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

that would make a lot of sense, they introduced loot scaling just as i got into uw and solo farming so i'll be pleased to see it back--Chris1645 20:57, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

I think that you have a good point...nerfs to mass farming usually were intended to harm the bots. ANet always said they had no problem with manual farmers. Whether this is a good idea from game economy standpoints is another matter though...seeing 5k Rago's Staff makes me cry. Entropy Sig (T/C) 23:29, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

5k? What has the world come to? I was so used for rago's to be sold at 40-70k mark, now it has been brought to down, poor thing. Reverting it would good, as bots are not so hard to report and have banned with the dawn of /report. Since bots can easily outnumber the farmers in a given district or even town/outpost, the economy should return to it's former glory, now the GFCs have to invent some kind of report evading prompts = D. Flechette 23:35, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
Part of the reason for many price reductions is that there are fewer players wanting old items and more players able and willing to farm them. In short, supply has increased, demand has decreased...so almost anything from Factions or Prophecies is going to have a fairly low price. Hell, it's hard to sell many items at ALL. Try selling vamp blowstrings...doesn't matter if you ask 30g or 3k, you'll have a hell of a time finding a buyer.--Carmine 23:46, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
A...blowstring? LOL...I know what you mean, though. I've rarely tried to sell things, but I know how much people appreciate it when I actually buy something. Entropy Sig (T/C) 00:06, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, blowstring. You know, something you can slavage from a weapon, a weapon modifriar, like sword pummels, staff whappings, scythe snapes, focus whores, and inscraptions. Can you actually join gropes without knowing what weapon modifriars are? ROFFLE!! At that rate it doesn't matter how cheap Endoplasms and Oblivion Shrads get, 'cause you're never going to get to the Frogmaster for Oblivion armor. Your gonna haff to ware Dorks armor, lol. What kind of a looser nubb are you?? Your like one of them Vitenum war veterinarians with no arms and no leggs, your such a nubb. omg. I hope your a neckermancer, 'cause there's a lot of soul rapeing going on...--Carmine 02:46, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

wow --Gimmethegepgun 03:01, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
Another point that just again popped in my head is the economy which i think Entropy start the idea on, with mob farming basically gone, the rare skinned weapons and green prices have basically collapsed, I mean Ragos isnt 5k (yet) but its pretty much on its freakin way, and areas like Tombs are usless to farm now, Anet could delete Tombs and i doubt too many people would get mad, I think if Anet is looking for farming balance, they should bring back mob farming (to at least a testing phase to observe the bot situation) and maybe make changes to Unique and rar skin drop rarity, or nerf some builds taht farm them the A/E solo, i mean the Uniqu/rare skin item builds are going out of use anyways due to overfarming, everyone basically has what they want, and its almost imppossible to sell anything, i remember the day when you could go to DWC and sell 5 greens in 5 minutes at good prices, now it takes 2 hours in a completly full Kamadan ad1 to sell 2 items. The game economy is basically collapsing. I mean, alot/some of the players are under 18 and live with parents/gaurdians that limit computer time, ie, they cant do high level dungeons, complete UW, FOW things like that, and Anet is basically making it where you have to be with a real group to accomplish somthing if you arent pro at the game. (sry for the length, hehe, kinda turned into a rant too) Shogankiller 04:15, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

"The game economy is basically collapsing". Huh, what? It seems your idea of a good economy is that a lucky few people with access to all the good stuff can charge unreasonable amounts of gold for stuff everybody should be able to get for free by simply playing the game. I've never bought or sold a single weapon or upgrade from another player in my 30 months of playing this game, but maybe if people would actually be selling things for reasonable prices, I might reconsider participating in this economy.

/nods. One of the signs of a vibrant economy is the ability of the masses to participate. It used to be an entry-level computer system cost US$2000 and a decent system was in the $5000-$10000 range. Nowadays, prices are about a tenth of that. This isn't because the tech economy has collapsed, rather it's because the tech economy has boomed, which puts these things in the reach of ordinary people. The GW economy isn't quite to where it ought to be in these regards, but it's getting better. --68.187.144.197 00:31, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
I'd agree with that 100%, with a small caveat: it's not just the buying that must be vibrant, but the selling also. High supply and high demand at the same time. If people only want to buy things, then sure, people will empty their Storage to get rid of stuff which has been hanging around since forever - no new goods are created. If people only want to sell things, then they will go farm and gather tomes, greens, collectables, etc. - many new goods will be created. Both situations alone would be detrimental...there's got to be a balance, otherwise you end up with huge surplus (Rago 5k) or huge deficit (Rago 100k+ectos).
GW atm seems to be tending more towards the surplus side because, as someone said, most people already have all the goods they want, and the low prices have not helped that much. Imho I think a good change to stimulate increased demand would be either making greens Salvageable for their perfect mods, or increasing their sell price to Merchants to at least 1k. The former change would cause a massive increase in demand for otherwise obsolete greens and balance out the ridiculous prices of some mods (Scythe Enchanting = 10k). The latter change would cause a massive decrease in supply, with all those old hard-to-sell greends going to Merchants. Either would be a good idea to help out GW economy, I think. Entropy Sig (T/C) 01:51, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
I mean Unique and rare items arent rare anymore, and people are self funded (they get greens for themselves because its so easy) i actually think a nerf (yes im suggesting a nerf, don't shoot me) to solo green builds mainly the A/E E/A build would do the game economy good Shogankiller 01:59, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
I think people being able to get items for themselves is a good thing. They shouldn't have to farm forever just to buy one item. Zefir 03:04, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
/Agree, greens may come with perfect stats, but some skins...ewk. I like being able to get one of those for a build to function, but in the long term I'll look for a skin I like.Ereanorsignreanor 03:32, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
Well of course no one wants to get rid of the fact that you can get your own greens, but life isnt a perfect world, and if it is, it shouldnt be. Even i like it, but group farming is really the only way to go nowadays and 1. many people dont have the option of doing that (not enough time, not good enough, ect.) and 2. There should be more variety in farming, i mean I beat GWEN in 3 days when it came out, i dont want to have to keep redoing campaings and dungeons until another version/game comes out, if there was more things to do i would agree, but I personally hate monotonous work so redoing campaigns and dungeons ist really my thing, and that fact that so many other people redo things like that its basically become like solo green farming, where the end greens (while they still have some value for the moment) are on theyre way down to the ground. Someone metioned before that Anet is leading towards the surplus side of things atcm, well i think its time to lean towards the deficiet side. (btw, anyone have an anti-rant keyboard i can borrow?) EDIT and ty to the person that edited my post and made me contradict myself many times Shogankiller 16:41, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't claim to know how it came to be, but it seem that the economy switched from "people having overflowing money, and therefor being able to pay whatever silly price for the items they wanted", to "people having about all the items they want" and therefor not buying anymore. I regularly end up selling my green drops to the NPC, hell i'm happy when i sell anything to a player for 5-10k this days! Obviously, the fact the items don't get "used up",relative limited storage space, and the fact that you can only only ever use so many weapons, mean that the market becomes saturated at some point. New players aren't enought to generate an apropriate demmand. 20Nov2007 -Ayashi-

i completly agree, and the people having overflowing money was probably due to the bots, i think the thing is now that GW has become so large, so we either have to look for bigger expansions/campaigns or a a brand new clean slate (GW2) -shogankiller-
Ayashi, when you mentioned "used up" that made me wonder if a game mechanic from other RPGs might fit GW: that being weapons/armor/items that eventually "break". You can pay a fee to have them repaired, or learn a skill to repair them yourself with materials, or in some cases the damage may not be recoverable and you'd need to get new weapons/armor/items. Maybe it's a bad idea, but just thinking out loud so to speak on ways to help with the perceived market saturation. Also buying and selling in GW can sometimes be a pain IMO. The party search feature helped a little bit, but it's still primarily a trade chat channel exercise and hope you're in the right place at the right time to find your buyer/seller. I wish GW had an auction house. Maybe something similar to what WoW has? Shadowlance 02:48, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
Ooooo hell no, lol I'd personally hate that, I mean I dont want to spend gold repairing items every day, and I'm pretty sure other people dont want that either. And I think why GW has become so large is becuase of its uniqueness from other MMOs, like Map-travel, personal worlds, no monthly fee, ect. I would believe that making changes like that might actually decrease players. i was gonna say somthing else but i dont remember lol. -shogankiller-

Bug!

Was in the Realm of Torment just now with Herta, Mhenlo, Khim, and Cynn as henchmen. I heard the female Assassin's attacking sounds while fighting. To test, I went to the Isle of the Nameless and killed dummies with myself and the other Heroes who had been in my party - Koss, Goren, Vekk. Didn't hear the sounds.

I guess what I can conclude is that one of those henchmen uses the Assassin model...or it was a bug introduced in the latest update. Or it could have been Terick. Or Scorch Emberspire. Doubt it though. Entropy Sig (T/C) 01:56, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Just tested : Herta has a female assassin voice, but still uses the female elementalist animations. Hayda, at least when she is an NPC, has a female assassin voice too. 90.47.34.34 07:18, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
Probably a line of coding got misplaced or misdirected; the game's looking for NPC voices, not finding what it's supposed to find, and defaulting to the first option it hits ("A" for Assassin anyone?). --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 07:42, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
I realized that it is the same for Eve... Who's next ? Zhed ?90.47.34.34 09:00, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Assassin is first alphabetically, perhaps it thus serves as the default when the appropriate profession can't be found Merick 15:38, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

That's what I figure. A lot of the time, if you enter an invalid code, rather then simply giving you an error message, it'll just pick the next best thing it can find (otherwise, we would probably have errors and crashes whenever Eve tried to speak, and so on). --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 09:21, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Why is it a bug? Its a corpse? so therefore it logically follows you should be able to exploit it, as a minion master. Sorry I dont think there should be differentiation between pet and human corpses......a corpse is a corpse is a corpse.

It's because in this update they made it so you can't exploit pet corpses --Gimmethegepgun 05:04, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Great response. Can we get it so that heros/henches can't be exploited too? Maybe just human corpses across the board?
Cause the all powerful masters of ANET have said it so.

Tombs PvE came just before Factions, when the Battle Isles came. lol. 124.176.223.235 23:05, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Anyway, this is probably the saddest update ever. When you kill a level 5 uncharmed animal, you CAN exploit it's corpse - but if it's your pet, you can't any longer. So basically, charming an animal will now turn it into a ghostly creature of some sorts. I wrote a support ticket asking for a proper argument, why ever pet corpses cannot be exploited at all, but haven't gotten a reply other than that my suggested alternatives were forwarded to the dev team. I suggested that an exploited corpse could be made to take longer to resurrect instead, for instance (like, twice as long, or +5 seconds or something), or that a pet corpse can initially be exploited, but if it dies again within the time that the ranger's skills would be blacked out again, it won't leave an exploitable corpse. That would make much more sense. Right now, it's just a deliberate nagging. - Pup
Anyone know exactly why ANet made pet corpses not exploitable? What was the harm? If they thought people were killing the pet purposefully to provide a corpse why not just make pets suffer DP instead? Shadowlance 22:12, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, a pet with DP would be an even better minion source, because it would die faster. --–IshmaeelLazyeyesping/peek 22:31, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
You're right. Although I still don't see what the problem was that prompted them to make the change. If you brought a pet along just to be a corpse, that seems like a huge waste of a skill slot to me. Shadowlance 01:30, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
However, it WAS a walking corpse that could be exploited over and over again. A corpse generation skill would be stapled to EVERY mm's bar if they ever made one, this wasn't too far off. And on wasted skill slots, regular PvE barragers bring this and Comfort Animal, when the pet is completely worthless without Beast Mastery. 2 wasted slots --Gimmethegepgun 01:54, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

under the thumb of Anet now?

In the last few days I've noticed several updates and no word on what has been updated in this wiki. Does noone care so much anymore? Or, like Anet (who tends to tell us little or nothing about updates) do we only post what we're allowed to? Perhapse there should be a third GW Wiki, eh? One still run by players?

Well, that's the stupidest comment I've seen in a while. When Anet doesn't post the details of what changed in an update, what exactly do you expect Wiki writers to do, make stuff up? It's not a matter of only posting what you're allowed to, it's a matter of only posting what you know. Do you not care anymore? If you do care, then why didn't you post the details of what was changed? What, you don't know? Well, guess what, since this Wiki is still run by players, not A-net staffers, we don't know either! --68.187.144.197 10:11, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

11/21/2007 update

Anybody else loose character slots with this update? My factions key got replaced with bonus mission pack and I lost two character slots with it. I sent ANet a bug report already, just wondering if anybody else had this happen.

That didn't happen to me. I have eight characters created, so losing two slots would have made me lose two characters. After the update all eight characters are still present and accounted for. Shadowlance 02:10, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Could someone please help me with this wording and understanding? "For each bonus goal you complete, Durmand will give any one character on your account an additional authorized story. The additional stories can only be earned once for each account." What are the additional stories and how are they only earned once per account? I have already played some of the missions, but I do not want to do the bonus and find out that I can no longer earn rewards for something. If anyone understands this fully, please explain it differently than the way that ANET wrote it out. Thank you =)

Well, you know the Amulet of the Mists and the Book of Secrets and the Droknar's Key items? I think it is like that. The "Authorized Story" is the same sort of item. When you go back and redo the mission and complete the bonus goals, you get more copies of the "Authorized Story" that can be turned in for more rewards. I'm guessing what ANet meant is that (like the aforementioned endgame rewards) you can redo the BMP missions as many times as you want, but you will only earn each story once.
I dunno if it means once per character or once per account. I'm guessing it's account. That means that you can get a total of 4 "Authorized Story" for each mission, 16 total. Entropy Sig (T/C) 03:40, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

To be honest, I feel like it's a good update. Mr. Mango 00:58, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I think it's pretty balanced overall, but that's just over the top for Assassins. Neither build was hard to counter. Oh well, at least they didn't add Exhaustion or other crap like that. Entropy Sig (T/C) 01:01, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I agree, they have doubly nerfed skills sometimes, glad they didn't do it this time. One is enough, one at a time that is. Compare SP to Dark Prison, they have good comparisons, but nothing huge. It's still a good elite option in that sense imo. (DP is still usable, no? castigation signet?) Mr. Mango 01:03, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
DP was probably slightly overkill, 5 -> 15 energy is a bit too much for the rollover rate of the skill. Maybe a slight reduction in duration and 10 energy would've been better. Anyway, no more 0 DA sin froobs using it in tandem with FN --Gimmethegepgun 01:22, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Well Anet have said "We will be evaluating the following changes over the course of the next week.", so it's possible they'll tone down the nrg cost. --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 01:26, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I really want to see the energy go back down, and reduce the duration and raise the recharge. Encourage using it for just a few skills, you know? Instead of keeping it up perpetually and making every skill you have awesome. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 01:55, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

What the hell at this It's better using Dark Prison than Shadow Prison now -.-

It's better that way, SP needed to be put out to pasture for some time now just so sin nublets would actually consider using something else for a change, maybe it'll be buffed back in the future when sins have experimented a little. Deadly paradox deserved this as well, spamming a 15 energy skill every 15 seconds is actually a concern to your energy, which means you can't just spit dancing daggers all day for the skill-less kill. --Ckal Ktak 18:30, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
It should go down to 10 though. As it is, it's 3/4 your energy regen. –Ichigo724Ichigo-signature 18:34, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
And that's because it was meant to be used as a temporary measure to improve skill usage after a chain. However, people were using it indefinitely and spamming extremely painful skills. However, a good change would also be to make the percent be based on DA rank, so then people wouldn't be able to use infini-SF and lamer with FN with it unless they had some DA. But, this is a good method anyway, though overkill --Gimmethegepgun 19:43, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
If you people would stop using Assacasters then we wouldnt have this problem, nerfs come when a skill set is used to often, now we have two more useless assassin skills. --128.211.236.137 21:45, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
You can't rightly expect people to not use an amazing skill just because it'll get nerfed if you use it too much. That's like telling a top guild to not win so much, so they have more of a challenge in GvG or something. If skills are broken, even only in a few methods, then they need nerfing. We can only hope that they get nerfed in a manner that doesn't cause much collateral damage.
Just to note, the energy cost isn't so prohibitive as to stop a runner from using it; it just limits your ability to do anything extra, like, say, fight. I don't quite like the nerf, but it does it's job. I just got finished using an Assacaster to beat a mission, only I didn't even use Paradox. Too expensive, it's faster to simply skip it, and the number of knockdowns I have is still about on par with a good KD Hammer Warrior, which is pretty damn good considering I do most of mine from outside melee range. Perhaps that one skill in Critical Strikes will see some use for the build... Deadly Haste anyone? Works on a bunch of the important skills, just not on the really nasty ones, like Toxic Shock or Entangling Asp. But those are already nasty skills as it is. --GEO-logo Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 03:25, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Viable Professions for Pve

Who are they for primaries? with all these updates and skill changes, its scary to try to do necros and mesmers etc... Thoughts, comments?--saibot_Ra 03:06, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

All the classes do decently well - except for mesmer and possibly ritualist. Sins lack in high-end pve (as shadowsteps are nearly useless, and their usually spikey play style doesn't achieve any success against monsters with 1000 HP), but do fine in the rest of it.
Ritualists have few options; a common option is taking a bunch of offensive spirts and the pve-only Summon Spirits skill (but spirit spam is insanely boring). Channeling magic is generally bad for PvE because it can't kill mobs effectively; you have Ancestor's Rage and Spirit Rift as the only viable AoE spells, and rift usually misses mobs entirely. The rest of the spells are single-target damagers that are generally weak.
Mesmers contribute least to a general PvE team. They focus on single-target shutdown and punishment, and when you try to spam shutdown across multiple enemies, you run out of energy. The generally standard PDrain cannot be relied upon for energy management in PvE, for many mobs don't have casters (and in Hard Mode, the casters' spells are really hard to interrupt). A common tactic for PvP mesmers, disabling skills via stuff like Diversion, is very slow and barely affects the outcome of a particular battle in PvE.
Thus, mesmers are usually stuck trying to make their primary good by bringing a bar full of secondary-profession skills (like nukes) and emulating the playstyle of another class. ANet's pve skills for mesmer are pretty bad, and don't make them good enough to reliably PUG with.
Everything else is fine. Eles have nukes, warriors still dominate DPS, necros can be hexers and MMs (soul reaping is fine unless you're absolutely terrible at energy management), rangers are meh but don't suck outright (interrupts and condi spreading can be effective, or you could just run a touch ranger), dervishes have eternal aura & insert-avatar-here (except for Ava of Balth, because that's just a bad skill), monks are monks, and paragons are simply ridiculous in their ability to make a team invincible.
Any questions? -Auron 03:30, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
And this is exactly what's wrong with the balance...vide DoA for an example. Paragons, Rits, Mesmers, and Rangers have no place in that area. All you ever see is "Terra Tank LFG" and "Monk LFG." ANet needs to make it so that every class is viable in PvE. I feel awfully excluded, since none of my characters are able to function in "elite" areas like DoA and The Deep and so forth. PvE is supposed to be about player skill, not the limitations of a class. Silver40596
lol? You couldn't be more wrong about paragons. Go look up what TNTF and SY do, and notice how they can be kept up quite easily with a build like this one. Paragons are the single best class in the PvE game.
Oh... and tanks suck. Any group with a tank takes forever to do what is normally a fast clear, cos you have to wait an extra minute between each mob (and that usually adds up to over an hour for a full area). Stick with paragons to make even your casters tank Aatxe autoattacks - them hitting for 30 damage makes PvE a joke. -Auron 06:27, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Silver, I agree completely that it can be harder to use certain professions in certain places in PvE (or at all, in fact) but usually there is a way to make it work. Rangers used to have splinter barrage and trapping (before Splinter Weapon and EW were "balanced") but in high level areas they can still find PUGs running things like Famine (though it is a bit boring). I've seen Rt/Me tanks and Rt/E nukers as well. Ursanway groups are an option that I don't really like, but if you really want to do high-level stuff like UW and FoW (DoA seems dead as of late) and have to use a certain class it's an option. I've done full clears of both UW and FoW anywhere from one to three players down as well, so there's the option of supplementing the team with something else too. Can't speak much for PvE mesmers as they aren't super-common but if you've managed to get to a high-level area in PvE on a mesmer then you probably have the smarts and skill required to come up with a decent build of your own to run. Getting a group may be a different story but perhaps one can be found with your guild. If you've been in the area before it's a huge asset to you as well since you can take command and start your own PUG, grab the people you want, etc.
It would be nice if the professions themselves were more balanced in terms of usability in PvE. Gate of Madness in the first week after the release of NF really sticks out in my mind, as there were a lot of players stuck there trying and failing to get groups on paragons, in particular. But then, it's hard to balance the number of players per profession as well, as per the first year of Proph when there half of all players in an area were warriors. I guess my point is that the very nature of the game, being played by humans who aren't always logical or fair, means that the imbalance will be there and getting past that for these things is a 2-way street. To change minds you really have to be exceptional at what you're trying to do. -- mechasoupx 06:33, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Actually Entropy, I was talking about these skills as Auron was saying mesmer PvE skills "are pretty bad". I also didn't say EN + Arcane echo'd CoP > than fire ele's DPS; just that I prefer them to PUG ele's in difficult areas Jaxgreystar 03:28, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
That combo sucks. It's pure grind skills and a crappy PUG SF does the same job.Ereanorsignreanor 03:54, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Those only require Mesmer secondary; another profession could use them equally well, if not better. Ether Nightmare is so-so, Cry of Pain is good. But neither is the kind of roxxor good that, for example, "There's Nothing to Fear!" or Necrosis is.
The ideal PvE caster build deals AoE damage without too many conditions. DPS, killing speed, and efficiency are the three aspects of this. Therefore, even though that Mesmer build is alright, in the long run it is clearly inferior, and you'd never use it in the truly high-end PvE areas since there are better alternatives.
Mesmers in general...belong to PvP, or very specialized PvE circumstances (Mantra of Persistence + Shared Burden is hard to beat for huge long-term snare; also Wastrel's Worry). Many of their net functions, such as Hexing, anti-caster, enchant removal, etc. can be performed as easily or moreso by other professions. Fast Casting isn't that great of a primary attribute for PvE, either - you are either stuck trying to time interrupts or using spammable, low-recharge skills. Rangers can do interrupts quite nicely, and have more utility; Necromancers still rule in Hexes; Dervishes have plenty of enchant removal; etc. The problem is thus that Mesmers have a particularly small niche. They are good at perfect counters for 1v1 type fights. You just don't see too many of those in PvE.
Oh, and question for Auron: Communing Ritualist with Shelter, Union, Displacement; or Restoration Rit with AWS? I thought those were all the rage with PUGs nowadays. Entropy Sig (T/C) 03:54, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
My mesmer pretty much always have Echo, Backfire and Empathy on her bar. I remain flexible at dishing out hexes with respectable damage whether the enemy has lots of melee or casters. Nothing pwns an AI Dervish faster than Backfire plus enchant stripping (so they try to reapply the enchants again). As long as I'm not in a farming situation with 10 mobs biting on a bonded tank, I'd estimate my DPS to be significantly higher than an SS necro. Still, Mesmers can't find PvE groups in high-end places... -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 04:04, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
I thought they changed the AI so they no longer cast spells when under Backfire...or is that only in HM? Empathy was buffed and I forgot about that. Entropy Sig (T/C) 04:06, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Screwing PvE AI attackers was always a good choice, but it's boring considering the potential a Mesmer unleashes in PvP.Ereanorsignreanor 04:17, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Interesting comments, but a lot of this depends on what you mean by "PvE viable". Several comments talk about what you see LFGs for in DoA or the like -- that's a question of popularity and really has almost nothing to do with actual viability. If you're talking about ability to complete missions/quests, if you're willing to form a team of heroes/henchmen, just about anything will do. All the classes are viable, although some are easier than others. Mesmers have it the hardest, as Auron explained well. Ritualists have no trouble, not sure where Auron is coming from there, both spirit spamming and Spirit's Strength builds do quite well just about anywhere (I normally run Spirit's Strength, but as I recall I switched to spirit spamming when facing down Shiro). Everything else, as he notes, is fine, although the "meh" comment about rangers is puzzling (you have the options he mentions, or various buff-stacking/bow attack spamming alternatives that easily do ele level damage in short periods of time and by far out-DPS the ele over the long haul). Mesmers are a challenge, but that aside, you can't really go wrong with any particular primary, it's all a matter of making a good build for PvE, and constructing a good, complimentary team of heroes to go with it, and not being afraid to switch tactics as the mission requires. What you find personally viable says more about you as a player than it does about the profession. Personally, I play them all in PvE and would rate them in this order, from easiest to most difficult: Ranger, Necromancer, Elementalist, Assassin, Ritualist, Warrior, Dervish, Paragon, Monk, and Mesmer. Ask three other people and you'll no doubt get four other lists. This really does depend a lot on the person and how they play. --68.187.144.197 09:18, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
If you're just going H/H then the discussion isn't really relevant anymore, since having 1/8 of the team be a non-ideal profession rarely breaks you. Except for places where H/H is impossible, of course. Entropy Sig (T/C) 13:24, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
My rule of thumb for PvE, since it is so diverse, is to be flexible. The four most flexible professions, in my opinion, are Rangers, Necros, Warriors, and Elementalists. Ritualist secondary is great for added flexibility. Alaris 15:26, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
What's viable to you specifically will also largely depend on your playing style and what you consider "fun" to play. Personally, I love to play in the thick of the melee. My most played character is my Warrior. My second-most played character is my Ritualist. I usually lay down some spirits and then activate Ursan Blessing so I can get up close and personal with the foes. My elementalist is my least-played character. Others may like to rain the pain from a distance; that's simply not my style. I guess that applies to everyone and their style in some degree. Last night me and my guild played GvG, and somehow, our Guild Lord managed to walk through a wall. Is this common or what? (First time I ever played GvG, so idk) — eXtinctioN (Talk/Contributions) 07:17, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

May have been rubberbanding? o_O Entropy Sig (T/C) 02:51, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
That is odd. Of all the times I've done GvG a Guild Lord has never managed to walk through a wall. You could have been lagging. --Hellbringer (T/C) 02:52, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Call the Wallhax! police! lol. Never seen that happen before. Rubberbanding maybe be possible, but anything could be responsible, like flaming rocks from the sky or plain chaos. Flechette 12:28, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
You mean entropy? --Progr -- talkpage 15:09, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

More voicing

I've noticed some NPCs in RoF and THK speaking when clicked on, like their counterparts in GW:EN. SarielV 09:16, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

That's been there since GW:EN came out. It's because they just added voices to existing dwarven and Shining Blade models, instead of making new ones. --Macros 12:21, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
doesn't change the fact that most of Tyria is still mute :( Speech is such a rarity in the world :( — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 22:05, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
I actually like it better that way sometimes. NPC voices too much can be annoying. It's nice to get a break from EotN and go to Tyria - less people and less annoyances. :) Entropy Sig (T/C) 13:24, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
You do realise that EotN is *in* Tyria, right? -Meridan 11:38, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
For me, "Tyria" = Prophecies only. Entropy Sig (T/C) 13:08, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
"Tyria" as in Tyria (world). Read between the lines :P — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o, 13:39, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
"Tyria" still means Prophecies only for me. I know it's a whole world, but I don't consider them to be linked. Elona and Cantha and even EotN may as well be in separate universes for all I'm concerned. Entropy Sig (T/C) 13:41, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Crystal Overlook helps for Elona. I still have no idea where Cantha is (without looking it up, I mean). I think the Prophecies-Tyria and the EotN-Tyria distinction will lessen once people get used to the quicker map travel between them (no boat ride needed). ;) -- Peej 14:17, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
The fact that maps for Prophecies and EotN are contained within the same map doesn't make much of a difference for me. The games are still built as separate entities, and the gameplay connections between them are minimal. In a way, I'm hoping that campaigns/expansions will blend in better in GW2. That being said, I realize that EotN is in Tyria, which is in Tyria, but it still feels like a separate continent slapped onto an existing one. Alaris 14:55, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Do you consider the Crystal Desert a separate continent from the rest of Prophecies? Much like EotN, its on the same map, but you can't walk to it, you can only get there by doing a particular mission, after which you can get back and forth by map travel (without using the boat that's required for intercontinental travel). The games aren't really built as separate entities, it's all rather integrated -- they have to take pains to make sure you don't end up in areas you're not supposed to, since it's really all just the same game. --68.187.144.197 06:01, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
I'm just saying that without map travel or the boat, it's pretty hard to move from game to game. Even between Prophecies and GW:EN, which have areas next to each other, there is no direct route between the two. So you keep the mentality of "I'll go to GW:EN right after I finish what I'm doing in Prophecies". That's not a bad thing, mind you. It saves the game designers tons of worries, like for example, preventing caravaning, players getting lost, and balancing the two games so they match each other. But the trade-off is a loss of the sense of open world feeling that is more prevalent in some other RPGs. Another trade-off is that once a new campaign is out, outposts of earlier campaigns get dried up for a while. Alaris 15:24, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
