11th January update

Ever since the update the other day (jan 11th) ive been getting 007 errors everytime i leave a town. And also another update a month or so ago has made all my Female npcs do a "running and jumping" emote non stop. e.g. Storage Xunlai agents run then jump, stop and then apear back at there location and do it again. I emailed anet about this but they didnt reply, big suprise there lol. I have heard of lots of people with this problem. I was in a party with 1 guy and we tried to enter a mission had to retry 5 times to get him to connect properly. Ive asked around in towns about the problem with the NPCs but no one knows how to fix it and they have sent away to anet as well. If anyone can help that would be great. thanks

i've noticed errors like this before the update. A message briefly flashes on the screen saying "Your party is already waiting to begin the mission," then the game disconnects the user and throws you back to the login scren with a 007 error code. This typically happens to me at the entrace of Raisu Palace in Kaineng Center, but it's happened to me at the entrance of Viznuah Square (Local Quarter) in The Undercity. Its an intermittent bug that reeks of a software glitch to me. FlameoutAlchemist 17:59, 14 January 2007 (CST)

I have the same "Running and Jumping" glitch, but i've had i since the 21st of December. It happens to about 40% of npc's (Males)

Odd bug on client-start as of January 17, 3:00 EST (with new GW build)

Mere minutes ago I restarted the game due to the "new build available" message at the bottom of the chat window. It downloaded successfully, but now when I attempt to start the client, it gives an error saying it "failed to install" the game itself. Hence I can not get on the game, which is bothering me quite a bit. This is odd, considering it's already installed (all 3 campaigns), and only did this after the new build. I can include a picture if you would like, but has anyone else noticed this? EDIT: I should also mention that I own the computer and also am its sole user (so yes, I have admin access), and have 37 gigabytes of free space, so I'm pretty much 100% certain that I'm not low on space, if anyone mentions the possibility. The error states:

"Unable to install

The installer could not write Guild Wars to the specified directory. Please check that you have administrative access, that you have permission to install programs in the specified directory, and that there is sufficient space available on the drive." ('OK button' with ArenaNet logo at bottom of window)

I have had friends where their GW.exe became corrupted. Best advice would be to uninstall Guild Wars and download the client package(it's free) and reinstall it. In case your unaware as well, uninstalling the client on your machine does nothing to your account. — Gares 15:49, 17 January 2007 (CST)
Well, at the moment I'm taking Gem's advice, and it seems that it might just do the trick (will know in about a minute or two, defrag near done). I know that un-install won't harm my account (done it before since I've repartitioned my hard drive a few times), I don't think I suggested it did? I just expressed frustration at the issue. But anyways, I'm more curious what this new build adds. I'll mention whether or not the defrag worked shortly, I believe it will considering GW.dat itself was pretty much 100% fragmented after update. Odd, since I do daily defrags. No, standard directory. Defrag is done, and the same bug is occurring, so I'm going to go ahead and re-install. Also already checked the shortcut's target path and tried running from the directory itself, to no avail. Hopefully the re-install will fix it. Shas'o Kauyon 16:01, 17 January 2007 (CST)
Well, uninstalled and used the client download, and same error. I'm going to goof around with my router settings to see if there's any security functions that could be causing a problem (I've had issues with it before in Half-life 2, not sure why it would suddenly "pop up" like this though), and short of that I'm not sure what else to do, other than contact Anet support. Well, I think it's working now, though it's not all good news either, because it seems to me as if someone was somehow acessing my client on my own PC. The reason I believe so is because for some time, it would not allow me to delete GW.exe due to it being in use by another person or program, even AFTER killing nearly every running process on the PC via alt+ctrl+del (down to 13 processes, 100% Windows necessary services), yet I disconnected from the internet, restarted the pc and then it uninstalled fine (then reconnected just before re-install). Bah, good news=GW works, bad news=potential hacking :( . Scares me because I don't use any third party programs, and I spyware-sweep every day, so no idea why it would happen. If something goes wrong again, I'll edit this message instead of adding a new segment, this has gotten way too long since I'm so long-winded. Shas'o Kauyon 16:29, 17 January 2007 (CST)
Killing all the processes doesn't necessarily mean all the locks have been removed. Also hard killing a process (using kill -9 if you're familiar with linux) doesn't necessarily remove locks and will prevent a process from executing any normal cleanup/removal code. Windows does mysterious stuff with your files without telling you or doesn't remove the 'lock' so it was probably just windows itself preventing you to delete it. --Gem-icon-sm (talk) 16:32, 17 January 2007 (CST)

I should really set up a Debian/Windows multi-boot again (used to have it dual-partitioned, but Cedega and Wine hate ATI cards so couldn't play any games...) Well, now that my client works again, the "actual update" has at least added something rather hilarious to my Koss! I've never actually seen their icon with the hardhat. Also, the white blob shifts with the model. (the text on the hardhat guy says "Under construction) EDIT: The hardhat guy is over what used to be the GUI icon for an Adamantine Falchion, if anyone wants to check their weapons. Well, it seems the issue is actually the Adamantine Falchion. I took it off of him, and he's fine again. I can apply it to myself, and the same thing occurs. Don't worry about that glitch. I had it happen when I formatted my computer a couple months back. Basically I think it is something about some skins not being loaded or something yet. Maybe your folks chests are just bugged. Recently (on a NF character, post Xmas) I opened two or three unlocked chests in Issnur Isles and Mehtani Keys - a Buried Treasure, a Treasure Chest, and a something else. Got ~500 gold and a gold weapon from each one. They seem permanent to me. Entropy 04:36, 18 January 2007 (CST)
There may be a bug in these treasures. I went with a friend to the Buried Treasure on Issnur Isles and opened it. I got the gold (around 500) a golden weapon, but my friend got nothing. He also couldn't use it after me. We rezoned and went there again, he even went there alone, nothing. For him, the treasure is used without getting anything. Taiwan, Macao and Hong Kong have a Territory. China is currently in Beta Testing. All players have the same client. Even if you're in the USA you can select a variety of European and Asian languages. Think of the players. Is it fair for someone holding hoh for 30 minutes to be booted because a friggin chinese server needs a new config ? And yes, you can select languages, but you can't switch your territory so that shouldn't matter. Nookie, consider it this way - if you didn't get that one config change, then each game client around the world would start to diversify - there would be code in China clients that you didn't have and vice versa. It would be harder to apply something related (like changing North American servers), to apply fixes to a bug in one client as compared to another... game changes would take longer to bring into effect & test on different clients, and it would eventually break things down. You can complain all you want, but it just doesn't make sense for ANet to have separate clients for each country. That would mean a lot more code to look after with move potential bugs. January 23rd

So, I had to download some data this morning and got my client updated (my firewalls tells me that) but no news here what it was about. I suppose since the testing weekend ended, all skill-changes got undone. Or were any overtaken permanetly? Is everything back to before the weekend? Reordering ANet descriptions

I couldn't find a better place to discuss this (and if there is, please link me) so this is where I will bring it up. Currently the practice is to leave the update descriptions exactly how ANet releases them. I do believe this is a sound policy and should stay mostly in place. Where I do think some improvement can happen is on the skill changes that ANet listed. Occasionally they will release bullet points which are honestly rather sloppy in nature and make it difficult to find the information you are searching for. This most recent update is one of those cases. They might have done it purposely to make it harder to compare the skills to the temporary weekend, or maybe they just had to rush the update out... either way the list of the current skills for the 2/1/07 update makes it difficult to quick references the changes.

What I am proposing is to amend the policy on keeping ANet update descriptions to where we maintain the wording, but can modify the order of the description for easier reference. This wouldn't be exercised often unless in the case of massive updates or especially skill updates where a long list can be tough to sort through.
