Automated Tournaments[]

Item Updates[]

Armor Insignias and Bonuses

  • Players can now obtain armor insignias from all campaigns. Profession-restricted insignias will only drop in campaigns in which characters of that profession can be created.
  • Crafted armor in Prophecies and Factions now supports insignias. The insignia bonuses are meant to replace the previous inherent armor bonuses and require several additional changes:
    • From this point onward, armor pieces newly crafted in these campaigns will not have inherent bonuses. The crafting costs of these armor pieces have been reduced accordingly.
    • All existing level 20 armor from these campaigns now have insignias in place of their inherent bonuses. Please note that the bonuses on these armor sets have not been altered. The only change is that these bonuses now come from insignias.
    • All existing lower-level armor pieces from these campaigns now support insignias but have had their inherent bonuses removed.
    • Numerous armor sets have been renamed to avoid redundancy with insignia names.
  • Lower-level collector armor pieces from Prophecies and Factions now support insignias. Level 20 collector armor does not.

Ascended Armor Changes and Additions[]

  • The following changes were made to Ascended armor sets:
    • The armor sets crafted in Droknar's Forge have been divided between the two armorers in a more organized fashion.
    • Several Ascended armor sets have been renamed to avoid naming conflicts with the corresponding level 20 armor sets.
    • A new "Labyrinthine" tattoo set has been added for Monks at Marhan's Grotto.
  • In Prophecies, Mesmer, Monk, Necromancer, Ranger, and Warrior headgear may now be crafted with a variety of attribute bonus options.
  • Existing Lieutenant's Helms crafted in Prophecies now have a +1 Tactics bonus in addition to a Lieutenant's Insignia.

Miscellaneous Item Changes[]

  • The Icy Dragon Sword is now considered a rare item. This change also means that it is now exempt from loot scaling.
  • To help prevent trade scams, The Heart of Ice Prophecies quest item no longer shares icon art with sapphires.

Elite Mission Updates[]

  • Urgoz's Warren
    • Defeating Urgoz now spawns a chest that each player will be able to interact with individually. This chest will grant each player either one inscribable rare item or one of Urgoz's unique items, as well as two chunks of Amber.
    • Players who open this chest while in Hard Mode will receive two item drops and four chunks of amber.
    • Urgoz no longer drops his unique items himself.
    • Fixed an exploit where creatures successfully using suicide skills in Urgoz’s Warren still gave loot and experience.
  • The Deep
    • Defeating Kanaxai now spawns a chest that each player will be able to interact with individually. This chest will grant each player either one inscribable rare item or one of Kanaxai's unique items, as well as two chunks of Jadeite.
    • Players who open this chest while in Hard Mode will receive two item drops and four chunks of jadeite.
    • Kanaxai no longer drops his unique items himself.

Help Panel[]

Players can now access a Help panel by pressing F10 on their keyboard or by typing /help. This new panel contains links to the official Guild Wars Wiki, where players can both obtain and contribute information about their current quests, skills, locations, and guilds.

  • The /help emote has changed to /helpme. /help is now used to open the Help panel.
  • Typing /wiki into the Chat panel opens the front page of the wiki, while typing /wiki followed by a word or phrase searches the entire wiki for that content. (Please note that there is only an English language wiki available at this time.)

Bug Fixes[]

  • Fixed a bug that caused some items to appear temporarily as white boxes in the Inventory panel.
  • Fixed a bug in Old Ascalon that prevented some players from vanquishing the map while in Hard Mode.
  • Fixed a line-of-sight bug that allowed a variety of exploits in the Dark Chambers Hall of Heroes map.

Miscellaneous[]

GuildWiki notes[]

  • Updated the Legendary Cartographer Title Track to display as Legendary Cartographer.
  • Pet Controls now work differently, as compared to how they worked when pet controls were first introduced. The target locking feature of the pet control panel is now an attack button and works on the pet as a target call works on a hero/henchman. If your target is in about twice the range of the aggro circle or closer, the pet will attack (and will stop attacking if you move farther away). You no longer need to hit the target yourself to make your pet attack it. Furthermore the restriction on pet attacks to shout range has been removed again.

Update - Thursday April 19, 2007[]

Hard Mode[]

Hard mode has been introduced for the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns. Players who have completed a campaign can now try playing it again in Hard mode for the ultimate challenge. By playing the game in Hard mode, players can find new treasures and earn new titles and rewards.

Now that players can choose their difficulty level, we've adjusted monster AI in Normal mode to present a more moderate challenge. The most advanced and difficult monster behaviors are now reserved for Hard mode. (Note: Certain elite missions may be extremely difficult to complete in Hard mode. We will examine these missions and make any necessary changes at a later date.)

Changes to Normal Mode[]

The following monster AI modifications have been made to Normal mode only. Monsters in Hard mode continue to use the most challenging AI available.

  • Monsters in Normal mode now respond more slowly to AoE damage.
  • Monsters in Normal mode are now less likely to kite for long periods of time.
  • Melee monsters in Normal mode will once again focus all of their attacks on a single target.

Accessing Hard Mode[]

  • To gain access to a campaign's Hard mode, you must win the final mission for that campaign in Normal mode.
  • Once you win a campaign with any character on your account, every level 20 character on that same account will have access to Hard mode for that campaign.
  • All Hard mode content is intended for level 20 characters. All monsters are at least level 20, and all henchmen who are below level 20 are automatically promoted to level 20 when taken into Hard mode.

Hard Mode Loot[]

  • The average number of uncommon and rare items has been increased in Hard mode.
  • While in Hard mode, the number of gemstones that players receive from chests after defeating each region of the Domain of Anguish has been doubled.
  • Elite and non-elite Skill Tomes have been introduced into the game. You can acquire these new items by defeating creatures while in Hard mode.
    • There is a non-elite Skill Tome that corresponds with each of the ten professions. You may use a Skill Tome to learn any non-elite skill associated with that Tome's correlated profession if that skill is unlocked on your account. Non-elite Skill Tomes may be obtained from any normal creature in Hard mode.
    • There is an Elite Skill Tome that corresponds with each of the ten professions. You may use a Skill Tome to learn any elite skill associated with that Tome's correlated profession if that skill is unlocked on your account. Elite Skill Tomes may be obtained from any boss creature in Hard mode.

Hard Mode Rewards[]

  • Players will receive the following gold, experience, and skill point rewards while in Hard mode:
    • Prophecies
      • Mission Completion: 500 gold + 2,000 xp + 1 skill point.
      • Bonus Completion: 500 gold + 2,000 xp + 1 skill point.
    • Factions and Nightfall
      • Master’s Reward: 500 gold + 3,000 xp + 1 skill point.
      • Expert’s Reward: 300 gold + 2,000 xp + 1 skill point.
      • Standard Reward: 200 gold + 1,000 xp + 1 skill point.

Hard Mode Titles[]

Vanquisher Title[]
  • A new Vanquisher title track has been added for Tyria, Cantha, and Elona. These titles will keep track of which explorable areas have been vanquished in a given campaign's Hard mode.
  • A new Legendary Vanquisher title track has been added. This title keeps track of the number of campaigns a player has successfully vanquished.
  • Once an explorable area has been vanquished in Hard mode, players will receive gold equal to three times the number of creatures defeated, and experience equal to five times the number of creatures defeated.
  • Some explorable areas have regions that are blocked off to players until the associated mission has been completed. It is recommended that players complete the mission before trying to vanquish the explorable area of the same name.
  • In Hard Mode, if all party members of a group are dead and at 60% Death Penalty, they will be returned to the outpost instead of being resurrected.
Guardian Title[]
  • A Guardian title track has been added for Tyria, Cantha, and Elona. These titles are the Hard mode version of the existing mission completion titles.
  • A Legendary Guardian title track has been added. This title keeps track of how many Protector and Guardian titles a player has accumulated throughout Tyria, Cantha, and Elona.

Lockpicks[]

  • Your characters can now acquire lockpicks. These new, special items can be found in Hard mode and may also be purchased from any merchant (with the exception of those found in Pre-Searing Ascalon).
    • The chance to retain a lockpick upon opening a chest is determined by the following formula: (Character level / 2) + (3 * Treasure Hunter ranks) + (2 * Lucky ranks) (%).
    • In Normal mode, chests have built-in bonuses that make them easier to open than chests in Hard mode.
    • Lockpicks may be used to open any locked chest in Normal mode, but they are a requirement for opening any chests in Hard mode.

The mission completion times for the purposes of Standard, Expert's, and Master's rewards have been increased in the following Hard mode missions:

  • Improved target locking for pets.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented various team and boss auras from displaying properly.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Kournan peasants to appear as if they were glowing.

GuildWiki notes[]

  • Bosses will drop their normal greens while in Hard Mode. As in, Hassin Softskin drops his normal non-max Hassin's Shell, even when he is killed in Hard Mode.
  • There is a bug related to the Vanquisher Title. Defeating the last enemy of an area has caused some players' games to freeze and close. However, the credit for completing that area IS logged in the Vanquisher title track.
  • Noticeable changes in AI for Hard Mode:
    • Mobs move much faster than normal. With a 33% increase speed skill activated, the mobs still catch up to the player.
    • Mobs also attack faster than normal. With a 33% IAS skill activated and the same type of weapon as an enemy, the player barely attacks faster than an enemy without an IAS skill activated.
    • Patrol mobs tend to disengage from battle to move to their next patrol waypoint like flagging heroes/henchmen (possibly a bug).
  • Blocking attacks now has its own effect with a white spark and a distinct noise.
  • Arrows now have a slightly different animation that makes them more apparent as they travel through the air.
  • All new and previously existing Ascalon Longbows and Ascalon Razors from collector Louise Haup have been nerfed from +25% (vs. Charr) to the normal max damage +20% (vs. Charr). It is still possible to salvage these mods. Mods that were salvaged from previously existing Ascalon Longbows and Ascalon Razors are still +25% vs. Charr.
  • Critical Hits now have a distinct noise and animation.

  • To name your account, speak with Tolkano [Tournament], who is located in the Great Temple of Balthazar, the Hero Battles outpost, and all guild halls.
  • You may select as your account name the name of any one of your characters.
  • As long as your account name exists, no one else may use it as a character or account name.
  • If you delete the character after which your account was named, your account name will remain unchanged.
  • You may change your account name no more than once every 30 days.

Hero Battles[]

  • The Hero Battle panel now offers two options: rated and unrated Hero Battles.
  • Players may participate in Hero Battles once they name their accounts.
  • The results of rated Hero Battles appear in the Hero Battle tab of your Hero Panel. Wins and losses affect your Hero Battle rating and your standing on the Hero Battle ladder.
  • The Hero Battle ladder will be viewable on the Guild Wars website by the end of the week.
  • Players are matched according to their Hero Battle ratings.
  • The central shrine's "To the Pain!" buff has been modified so that it now reduces healing effectiveness by 10% (instead of reducing maximum Health by 10%).

Guild Battles[]

  • The visual appearance of the Guild Battle panel has been improved and modified so that it more closely mirrors the look of the Hero Battle panel.

Preparations for Automated Tournaments[]

  • Servers have been updated in preparation for the upcoming open beta test of the Guild Wars Automated Tournament system.
  • For further information about Automated Tournaments, please visit the Competitive Play section of the Guild Wars website.

Account Storage[]

  • Account storage has been expanded to include a Storage Box for each Guild Wars campaign you own.

Pet Controls[]

  • The Pet Control panel may be accessed by pressing the button next to the pet’s name in the Party panel.
  • The Pet Control panel displays a pet's name, portrait, command buttons, and Health Bar.
  • Pets can be instructed to "attack," "guard," and "heel" through the use of the panels' command buttons.

Obtaining the Hero Razah[]

The method of gaining the Ritualist Hero Razah has been updated so that it no longer requires gemstones from the Domain of Anguish. Players who have already gained Razah as a Hero are now able to complete a quest that will return their Anguish gemstones.

  • Updated the quest "Finding a Purpose." Players are no longer required to provide Anguish gemstones to enter the Heart of Abaddon. The original version of the "Finding a Purpose" quest has been removed.
  • Added the new quest, "Money Back Guarantee". Players who have already completed the quest "Finding a Purpose" will now be able to obtain the "Money Back Guarantee" quest from Keeper Shafoss in the Abaddon's Gate outpost. Completing this quest will reward them with one of each type of gemstone.
  • Players who have partially completed the "Finding a Purpose" quest by turning their gemstones in to Keeper Milzesh will be able to complete the quest. They will then be able to obtain the "Money Back Guarantee" quest from Keeper Shafoss.
  • Players who currently have the "Finding a Purpose" quest in their Quest Log but have not yet turned their gemstones in to Keeper Milzesh, will now need to speak to Chaplain Phyratyss in the Gate of Anguish to get the new version of the quest. Their Quest Log will be updated with the new information.
  • Players who have neither taken nor completed "Finding a Purpose" will receive the new version of the quest when they speak to Chaplain Phyratyss in the Gate of Anguish.
  • If players have turned their gemstones in to Keeper Milzesh but have not completed the "Finding a Purpose" quest, they should NOT abandon the quest. If they abandon the quest after this step, there will be no record of their gemstone exchange. This will prevent a player from being offered the "Money Back Guarantee" quest.

Mission Updates[]

  • Gyala Hatchery: The skill sets used by Argo and Endre have been improved. These NPCs will now assist players properly in combat.
  • Divinity Coast: When approached, the chosen villagers will now appear on the player's Party bar.
  • D'Alessio Seaboard: When approached, Benji Makala will now appear on the player's Party bar.

  • Added an interface to allow players to link template codes into chat. This interface can be accessed through the new Template Codes option in the template menu.
  • Clicking a template code link will bring up the new interface, which will allow other players to view the linked template and its template code. They can then choose to save or apply this template directly through the interface window.

Recent Teammates[]

  • Added a list of recent teammates and trade partners to the Friends panel. This list will remain populated until a player logs out.

Miscellaneous Interface Updates[]

  • Updated all Prophecies NPC interactions so that they use buttons instead of text links.

  • A portion of your Health Bar now turns gray when you suffer from a Deep Wound.
  • Added a key that clears the current target. This key can be bound through the "Targeting: Clear Target" option in the Control options panel (Menu> Options> Control).

AI Updates[]

  • Improved Hero and henchman response to called targets.
  • Skills can now be prioritized while Heroes and henchmen are en route to a flag.
  • Once your Heroes or henchmen get within a certain range of their flag, they will stop trying to reach that flag if there is unwalkable terrain or if it is occupied by an enemy.

GuildWiki notes[]

  • The change to Mallyx's skill, Summoning Shadows made it activate instantly, like Call to the Torment and take effect 3 seconds later.
  • Changed the layout of the Skills and Attributes panel so that the attribute ranks are immediately to the left of the attribute names. Previously, the names were on the left and the ranks were to the far right.
  • Sunspear Title Track is no longer maxed at Spearmarshal: there is a new level at 30,000 points, Legendary Spearmarshal.
  • Added a new title track: "Sweet Tooth Title Track". You will get one or more points by consuming various sugary foods or drinks.

  • This update has introduced a strange bug which sometimes restricts party size to 7 instead of 8 with no obvious reason, indication or explanation.
  • Removed the easily accessible Demonic Chest in the Stygian Veil region of the Domain of Anguish. This update modified all chest spawns in the game. This was made to address chest running in the Domain of Anguish. Prior to this update, Chests associated with spawns that had yet to appear (like those that trigger by accepting a quest) were accessible before the groups that they are associated with appear. This allowed for easy access to a few chests in the Stygian Veil and Ravenheart Gloom in the Domain of Anguish, two areas that feature a lot of pop-up groups tied to quests. This update tied the chest appearance to the group itself appearing.

Update - Thursday February 1, 2007[]

Broken Tower and Courtyard[]

The winning team is no longer decided by who is holding the altar when time runs out. The new win condition is based on points earned by killing members of the opposing teams.

  • Every time a team kills an opposing player, that team is awarded one point.
  • Killing a Ghostly Hero awards double points.
  • The first kill of a match awards double points.
  • Players may still capture the altar, but this is now done through the use of capture points similar to the control points used in Alliance Battles. The team with the most players in range of the capture point begins capturing the altar. The Ghostly Hero counts as 4 players.
  • The team holding the altar receives a 10% damage boost.
  • When the timer hits zero, the team with the most points wins. In cases of a tie, the team that scored the last kill wins the match. If no teams have scored a kill, there is no winner.
  • Teams resurrect every minute on these maps.
  • Added resurrection shrines to the Broken Tower map.
  • Players no longer incur a death penalty (DP) on these maps.
  • Increased the time limit to 7 minutes.

  • Players no longer incur a death penalty (DP) on this map.
  • Updated the Hall of Heroes map so that it is more open.
  • The contents of the reward chest have been updated, and its location has been moved. All players now need to click on it to receive a reward for winning a battle in the Hall of Heroes. To give players time to do this, the wait time between matches has been increased.
  • When players enter the Hall of Heroes, the win condition and match objectives are randomly decided from four options. These four options are described below.

Kill Count[]

  • Every time a team kills an opposing player, that team is awarded one point.
  • Killing a Ghostly Hero awards double points.
  • The first kill of a match awards double points.
  • Players may still capture the altar, but this is now done through the use of capture points similar to the control points used in Alliance Battles. The team with the most players in range of the capture point begins capturing the altar. The Ghostly Hero counts as 4 players.
  • The team holding the altar receives a 10% damage boost and gains a morale boost for every 2 minutes they hold that altar.
  • Teams resurrect at their shrine every minute, along with their Ghostly Hero. The team holding the altar resurrects upon the altar every minute, along with their Ghostly Hero.
  • When time runs out, the team with the most points wins. In cases of a tie, the team that scored the last kill wins the match. If no teams have scored a kill, the defender wins.

Murder Ball[]

  • Three relics are spawned, one for each team, at equal distances from the altar.
  • Players bring their relic to the central altar to score a point.
  • A relic returns to its start point if an opposing team member picks it up.
  • Teams resurrect at their shrine every minute.
  • When time runs out, the team with the most points wins. In cases of a tie, the tying team that last captured a relic is awarded the win. If no relics have been captured, the defending team wins.

Capture Points[]

  • There are 4 capture points on the map: one on the altar and one at each team's resurrection shrine.
  • Teams begin capturing a point when they have more players within range than any other team. The Ghostly Hero counts as 4 players.
  • Every 30 seconds, teams are awarded one point for each capture point they are holding.
  • Teams resurrect at their shrine every minute, along with their Ghostly Hero.
  • When time runs out, the team with the most points wins. In cases of a tie, the tying team that last scored a kill wins the match. If no kills have been scored, the defending team wins.

King of the Hill[]

  • Bring your Ghostly Hero to the central altar. Once he is in range of the central altar, he will attempt to claim it. When he has done so, he moves to the center to hold it.
  • Every 30 seconds, the team holding the altar receives one point.
  • When time runs out, the team with the most points wins. In cases of a tie, the team to have held the altar last wins.
  • Claim Resource: casting time reduced to 2 seconds, Energy cost reduced to 0.

GuildWiki notes[]

  • The conditional healing for Word of Healing was already 15..100 before this update. The update actually changed the unconditional healing to 15..100.
  • The description of "Shields Up!" was not updated to reflect the added armor applying to all projectiles.
  • Steady Stance's energy gain was actually lowered to 1..7.
  • Divert Hexes had its activation time increased to two seconds. This was fixed in a later update.
  • Unnatural Signet now instantly recharges if it targets any summoned creature instead of only recharging instantly if targets a spirit.
  • Illusion of Pain had its recharge time reduced to 5 seconds.
  • Essence Bond has become broken again. It does not provide energy to the caster if the ally enchanted with it is taking zero damage from attacks.
  • Destructive was Glaive initially had no armor penetration. A later update changed it. It now provides a flat -6 AL adjustment.
  • Gaze from Beyond was changed to 10..30 health, not 10..30% health.
  • Lamentation now inflicts damage if a spirit or corpse is within earshot the target, rather than damaging the target if they are within earshot of a spirit or in the area of a corpse as the update notes imply.
  • Leader's Comfort had its activation time increased to three seconds. This was fixed in a later update.
  • Mighty Throw and Unblockable Throw both had their activation times lowered to two seconds. This was fixed in a later update.
  • Stunning Strike's damage was lowered to 5..30 and the daze duration was lowered to 4..10.
  • Avatar of Melandru was changed from +200 health to +150 health.
  • A glitch that allowed parties to skip through certain gates (for example in The Foundry of Failed Creations) has been fixed.
  • The skill Summoning Shadows used by Mallyx the Unyielding was modified to be energy based (instead of adrenaline) in an attempt to force parties to fight Mallyx within the citadel.
  • Protector title track now has the description: You will earn the title Protector of <continent> once you complete <max level> of all <x> missions of the continent of <continent>, and the title Guardian of <continent> once you complete them again in hard mode. (This change seems to affect only title tracks which are still not at the Protector title). Nothing is yet known of what exactly is "hard mode".
  • Although most evasion-related skill effects have been converted to block-related skill effects, there are some exceptions. If an attack skill could not be blocked and had a conditional effect which triggered on evasion, the conditional effect now triggers on blocking and the "cannot be blocked" has been removed. If an attack skill could not be evaded and had a conditional effect which triggered on blocking, the conditional effect has been retained and the "cannot be evaded" effect has been removed rather than be converted to a "cannot be blocked" effect.
  • Captain Denloh was added to the Sunspear Great Hall in this update or an earlier update.
  • The Frog in Kamadan is once again wearing a Wicked Hat, however this change may have happened in an earlier update.

  • Adjusted the positions of several of the defenders in the Isle of Solitude guild battle map to more effectively defend the Guild Lord.
  • Screenshots are now saved as JPG files.

Heroes' Ascent[]

  • Re-introduced the Burial Mounds map into rotation, with some map alterations to make it more conducive to a 1v1 map.
  • Removed the Scarred Earth map from rotation.

Changes for this Weekend's Testing Event:[]

Broken Tower and Courtyard[]

The winning team is no longer decided by who is holding the altar when time runs out. The new win condition is based on points earned by killing members of the opposing teams.

  • Every time a team kills an opposing player, that team is awarded one point.
  • Killing a Ghostly Hero awards a team double points.
  • On Broken Tower, the team holding the altar resurrects upon the altar every minute, along with their Ghostly Hero.
  • On Courtyard, teams resurrect every minute at their shrine while their Priest is alive. The team holding the altar resurrects there instead of at their shrine.
  • Increased the time limit to 10 minutes.
  • Players no longer incur a death penalty (DP) on these maps.

Hall of Heroes[]

  • Increased the time limit to 8 minutes.
  • Players no longer incur a death penalty on this map.
  • The contents of the reward chest have been updated, and its location has been moved. You can find the new location by looking on your Compass after you've won a match. All players now need to click on it to receive a reward for winning a battle in the Hall of Heroes. To give players time to do this, the wait time between matches has been increased.
  • When players enter the Hall of Heroes, the win condition and match objectives are randomly decided from three options. These three options are described below.
    • Kill Count
      • Every time a team kills an opposing player, that team is awarded one point.
      • Killing a Ghostly Hero awards a team double points.
    • Murder Ball
      • Three Heroes are spawned, one for each team, at equal distances away from the altar.
      • One relic is spawned on the altar in the middle of the map.
      • Players bring the relic to their Ghostly Hero to score a point.
      • When a player picks up the relic, a timer starts counting down 60 seconds. When that time is up, the relic respawns at its start location.
      • If a player is holding the relic when the timer is up, that player dies.
      • If a Ghostly Hero is killed, he resurrects after 10 seconds at the place where he stood.
      • Teams resurrect at their shrine every minute.
      • When time runs out, the team with the most points wins. In cases of a tie, the tying team that last captured a relic is awarded the win. If no relics have been captured, the defending team wins.
    • Capture Points
      • There are 4 capture points on the map: one on the altar and one at each teams' resurrection shrine.
      • Teams begin capturing a point when they have more players within range than any other team. The Ghostly Hero counts as 4 players.
      • Every 30 seconds, teams are awarded a point for each capture point they are holding.
      • Teams resurrect with their Ghostly Hero every minute at their shrine.
      • When time is up, the team with the most points wins. In cases of a tie, the tying team that last scored a kill wins the match. If no kills have been scored, the defending team wins.
